Context

Who wrote Jude? Jude an apostle and the brother of James who was the elder over Jerusalem.
Who was the audience? Those who are called; Christians. v3 “friends”
Why was Jude written? Contend for the faith delivered once for all to the saints.
What’s going on in the world? The church is battling with evil men who have joined the church.
There is tension in the New Testament, especially in the Apostolic letters, between freedom from judgment and the necessary works of our new life. Today we will focus on the later.

Marks of a False Teacher

v4 “ungodly ones who change the [grace of our God] (aka the gospel) into licentiousness”: define: promiscuous and unprincipled in sexual matters. Gal 5:19 “works of the flesh”
^ I don’t understand v4 at all.
v4 “designated long ago” namely, in Peter’s prophecy (v17-18) 1 Ti 4:1 2 Ti 3:1
v6 “angels who did not keep to their own domain” JFB “Their ambition, whereby their affections went away from God and they fell, is in God’s view a sin of like-kind spiritually as Sodom’s going away from God’s order of nature after strange flesh… They lurk in places of gloom and death, looking forward with agonizing fear to their final torment in the bottomless pit. He means not literal chains and darkness, but figurative in this present world where with restricted powers and liberties shut out from heaven, they like condemned prisoners, await their doom.”
v8 “because of their dreams, defile the flesh”
v9 “they understand by instinct like the irrational animals, by these things they are being destroyed”
v11 what is the error of Balaam? What is the rebellion of Korah?
v12-13 “feasting together without reverence, hidden reefs at your love feasts, caring for themselves, waterless clouds carried away by winds, late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, uprooted, wild waves of the sea foaming up their own shameful deeds, wandering stars, for whom the deep gloom of darkness has been reserved for eternity.”
v16 “grumbles, discontented, proceeding according to their desires, and their mouths speaking pompous words, showing partiality to gain an advantage.”
