The Apocalypse: Enduring Corona

Intro:

Coronavirus seems drawn out...how will we make it?
(Yarta survived civil war, resilient...neighbor lady...kids schooling...jobs.. economy...loved ones...)
+ This has forced us to make changes... Will we make it through?
Other hard things we face: loss of loved ones, personal economic challenges, relational strains, responsibilities, etc...pressure... Will we make it? Will we grow stronger or break?
A pressure we may not feel like we face overtly is pressure to deny Jesus or defect from following Him...to leave Jesus...
- but I think there are pressures around us that we don't often notice pushing us to conform to the patterns and priorities of this world...or quit following Jesus because it seems too hard

“The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.” ― G.K. Chesterton

So instead of aiming for what Christ wants for us as the church we adapt and change and conform…because what He’s calling us to would be harder! More pressure! More intense!
- So we change and adapt to survive...but what if what survived isn't worth saving?
Rev 2 and 3: Two Churches commended for their Faithfulness under pressure...no rebuke... many similarities and parallels between them and for us today...
We want to hear what God is saying to the Church today…we need an Apocalypse, a Revelation OF Jesus FROM Jesus!
2:8-11 and 3:7-13 … STAND
Revelation 2:8–11 NIV
“To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again. I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich! I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.
Revelation 3:7–13 NIV
“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth. I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown. The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
Observations?
What do you notice? What are some similarities or differences?

Smyrna

Present Day - Izmir
Break down Smyrna + Crown city + faithful to caesar + synagogue of satan + persecution "temporary" + thought poor but really rich + in a city that was rich
Map?

The First and Last, who died & came to life again

Afflictions & Poverty

Tribulation/Affliction/Persecution is thlipsis.
- Originally, thlipsis meant simply pressure and could, for instance, describe the pressure of a great stone on someone’s body.
- At first it was used quite literally, but in the New Testament it has come to describe the pressure of events which constitutes persecution.
Affliction/Persecution - Why?
Unwilling to bow to Caesar
Tradition of burning incense and saying “Caesar is lord”
Faithful to the Roman Empire. Guardian City of multiple temples to the Emperors
Poverty - Why? Because they wouldn’t bow their knee to Caesar...
Craftsman city and the Guilds & Unions of the day wouldn’t allow people in unless they would align themselves with the empire and the god of the emperor.
…YET you are RICH

Slander & Synagogue of Satan

I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days.

10 Days = Daniel & his friends, general way of saying a short time...

Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.

Faithful
Crown of Life = games…fading crowns.
Crown of life
Crown of Victory
Crown connection to Smyrna city

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.

Second Death
Reference to the end of Revelation 20, Lake of Fire is the second death.

Philadelphia

+ Brotherly love
Another Temple Keeper city…Loyal to the empire and seeking to have the favor of those in power
“These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.  I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.”
Key of David = authority to open and close. The KEY HOLDER for the castle.
Their deeds were known.
Founded as a doorway city as it sat on the border…meant to spread Greek ideas into the lands beyond the border...
God was placing an open door before them…even in the midst of their affliction!
thought of themselves as weak but actually strong because they had remained FAITHFUL!
Synagogue of Satan again...
They will acknowledge that Jesus loves the church!
They endured patiently…THLIPSIS
Keep You: Remove or Protect?
I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown.  The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name.
Don’t quit! You almost have the crown!
Pillar: When Roman priests who had been faithful to their duties died they would erect a pillar in their honor with their name on it…Playing off of that here!
Except that this pillar is eternal and with the name of God!
Volcanic activity and earthquakes…AD 17 completely destroyed…rebuilt, but ongoing tremors caused a lot of in-and-out...
Jesus is promising something solid!
name changers as a city…Neocaesaria during time of Tiberius because he helped the city be rebuilt...Flavius Philadelphia in honor of Emperor Vespasian’s family name...

Faithful to the End

Address similarities and repetition...why? Faithful Under Pressure Pressed But Not Crushed Shaken Not Stirred
Corona = latin for crown They were promised an enduring crown!
Endure for the Crown of Life...an Eternal Crown...
Throughout Revelation and the 7 churches there's a Thlipsis (pressure/Affliction) that they must go through with Patient Endurance to get to the Basileia...the Kingdom is our goal!

Example: Coffee/ AeroPress: ground up, hot water, stirred, pressure...but what comes out is good (sweet even compared to the bitter bean) - include process that the bean goes through to even become a bean to be ground...

9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Their suffering was: Affliction/Persecution, Slander, and Poverty that came because of their FAITHFULNESS
JOB (was the most faithful!), Moses, Jesus, Daniel (didn’t change his faithfulness and prayer based on who was in charge), etc.
Peter writes about suffering for doing good!
Affliction and poverty that come when we’re faithful to the king...
If Jesus is King in your life, what does this mean?
What does it mean to bow your knee before the empires and emperors (rulers and authorities?) of this world? What does that mean?
Money? Power? Pleasure? Politics? Position? Status?
What are you aligning with? What do you stand for? What do you bow to?
Check your wallet! Where your treasure is...
Your time...
Your emotions…what makes you mad or sad?
“Everyone has a price!” What’s your price?
What will you stand for??? Where will you bow?
Saying: “If you stand for nothing you’ll fall for anything.”

Who or what has your:

Attention

Affection

Allegiance

“More than conquerors...”
Troubles John 16:33 Pressed but not crushed ...Not abandoned...
Paul running the race and keeping the Faith...
2 Tim 4:7-8
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Life happens and we can lose our focus, direction, perspective, etc. We face trials and tribulations…There was only one way from thlipsis to basileia, from affliction to glory, and that was through hupomonē, conquering endurance.
Jesus said that in this world we will have troubles!
But He promised PEACE and Victory!
The Revelation of John, Volume 1 Smyrna: The Crown of Asia (Revelation 2:8–11 Contd)

Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, was martyred on Saturday, 23rd February, AD 155.

The Revelation of John, Volume 1 Smyrna: The Crown of Asia (Revelation 2:8–11 Contd)

Not even the police captain wanted to see Polycarp die. On the brief journey to the city, he pleaded with the old man: ‘What harm is it to say: “Caesar is Lord” and to offer sacrifice and be saved?’ But Polycarp was adamant that for him only Jesus Christ was Lord.

When he entered the arena, there came a voice from heaven saying: ‘Be strong, Polycarp, and play the man.’ The proconsul gave him the choice of cursing the name of Christ and making sacrifice to Caesar—or death. ‘Eighty and six years have I served him,’ said Polycarp, ‘and he has done me no wrong. How can I blasphe me my King who saved me?’ The proconsul threatened him with burning, and Polycarp replied: ‘You threaten me with the fire that burns for a time, and is quickly quenched, for you do not know the fire which awaits the wicked in the judgment to come and in everlasting punishment. Why are you waiting? Come, do what you will.’

So the crowds came flocking from the workshops and from the baths with bundles of wood—and the Jews, even though they were breaking the Sabbath law by carrying such burdens, were ahead of everyone in bringing wood for the fire. They were going to bind him to the stake. ‘Leave me as I am,’ he said, ‘for he who gives me power to endure the fire will grant me to remain in the flames unmoved even without the security you will give by the nails.’ So they left him loosely bound in the flames, and Polycarp prayed his great prayer:

O Lord God Almighty, Father of thy beloved and blessed Child, Jesus Christ, through whom we have received full knowledge of thee, God of angels and powers, and of all creation, and of the whole family of the righteous, who live before thee, I bless thee that thou hast granted unto me this day and hour, that I may share, among the number of the martyrs, in the cup of thy Christ, for the resurrection to eternal life, both of soul and body in the immortality of the Holy Spirit. And may I today be received among them before thee, as a rich and acceptable sacrifice, as thou, the God without falsehood and of truth, hast prepared beforehand and shown forth and fulfilled. For this reason I also praise thee for all things. I bless thee, I glorify thee through the eternal and heavenly High Priest, Jesus Christ, thy beloved Child, through whom be glory to thee with him and the Holy Spirit, both now and for the ages that are to come. Amen.
