Intro
Reformation Sunday
Remember the context of the letter. Warning against false teachers
Departure and return to right teaching
This is an important warning. It is not one of specific time, but ongoing
1 Timothy 4:1–5 ESV
1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.
This can be a confusing passage and is easy to take out of context.
It is important for us to understand
This is a warning that we need to heed

The Warning: From Whom and When

This warning that Paul shares is from the Spirit.
Referring to the Holy Spirit
Was the spirit speaking to them
More or less yes
This would have likely been a prophesy given by the spirit.
Still in the age of spiritual gifts, greater gifts
Come from the spirit
When is this message referring
Is it talking about end times, yes
Is it only end times, no
Some mention how this would have likely been talking about their age, in a coming generation
Appears that it starts there and has continued through time worsening.

The Warning: About Whom

Some will depart
Fallen away
Believers that renounced?
No, it is those that have departed from genuine faith to deceive
They are literally deceiving
Not a lost teaching or accidental wandering
Someone who is intentionally leaving the faith and seeking to lead others astray
Those who devote themselves to deceitful spirits or demons
Through the insensarity
conscience seared, burnt, branded.
