Big Idea - Christ is the perfect personal Savior

5 For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. 6 It has been testified somewhere,
“What is man, that you are mindful of him,
or the son of man, that you care for him?
7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels;
you have crowned him with glory and honor,
8 putting everything in subjection under his feet.”
Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. 9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
v5-8
• not written to angels
• reference to Ps. 8:4-6…connects back to creation / man who is less than God is over creation / now greater way the Davidic King - Jesus
• In Matthew 21:16 Jesus himself quotes from this psalm in justification of the messianic acclamation accorded him by the children in the temple; and in 1 Corinthians 15:27 and Ephesians 1:22 Paul teaches that the Psalmist’s assertion that God has put all things in subjection under man’s feet finds its fulfillment in Christ.
• rest in the already, hope in the not yet
• if we don’t see full now, what do we see…a person
v9
• he became a man in order to die
10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying,
“I will tell of your name to my brothers;
in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”
13 And again,
“I will put my trust in him.”
And again,
“Behold, I and the children God has given me.”
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.
v10 - Captain
• for whom and by whom
• bringing sons to glory (not angels)
• founder / Captain / Trailblazer
v11
• author and perfector
• now brothers…you are in the family when you know Christ
v12-13
Ps 22 and Isaiah 8:17-18
• Ps points to death and resurrection of Christ
• Isaiah
v14
• he came down
• sacrifice
• totally punked Satan
v15
• fear of death will make you do dumb things (slavery)
• The devil loves unity without truth - Pastor
v16
• not angles but people
17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
v17
loaded baked potato
like his brothers
merciful and faithful HP (nod forward)
propitiation
• expiation (washing away from sin)
• propitiation (satisfaction of God’s justice)
cf Romans 3:21-26
• propitiation enables God to be both the just and the justifier
for the sins of the people
• Jesus you don’t know what this is like!
"These two realities, forgiveness and power, are present in the passage before us: he who is our merciful and faithful high priest has both made propitiation for our sins and, himself the victor, is able to help those who are tempted."
v18
he identifies with you
Illustration from LOTR
In the book it goes like this
‘Farewell, Aragorn! Go to Minas Tirith and save my people! I have failed.’ ‘No!’ said Aragorn, taking his hand and kissing his brow. ‘You have conquered. Few have gained such a victory. Be at peace! Minas Tirith shall not fall!’ Boromir smiled. ‘Which way did they go? Was Frodo there?’ said Aragorn. But Boromir did not speak again.
In the movie it goes like this:
I would have followed you, my brother... My captain... My king.
