Work Study

1. What do you think the role of a wife is within the covenant of marriage?

Background Information

The Apostle Paul just finished explaining to the church in Ephesus that they are to submit to oneanother out of repsect for Christ. He has know applying this to different relationships. He starts with marriage, Wives and Husbands. Paul says,
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
2. How many times does Paul use the word submit? Answer: 3
3. What do you think submit means? Answer: to be or become inclined or willing to submit to orders or wishes of others or showing such inclination.
4. How does our culture view submitting?

1. Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

Submitting Illustrates Serving the Lord
Paul is explaining that the role of the wife is to have an intentional obedient heart toward her husband. This in no way means the wife is her husbands servant. It doenst mean she is to be taken advantage of, and it doesnt mean she doesn’t have a say in the relationship. And it doesn’t mean the husband is to be treated like God. In fact it may be a possibility that he may ask her to disobey God. In a case like that the wife’s obedience is to the Lord.
Eve displayed willful submission and obedience when God provided her as a SUITABLE HELPER to Adam in Genesis 2:20-22
Note that it doesn’t say servant – but a true honorable helper
5. What would be a consequence for not submitting? Answer: it will cause unwanted tension and resentment and you will be in constant competition with each other.
One of the worse feelings a husband can experience is from lack of respect from his wife
Proverbs 21:19 19 It is better to live in a desert land Than with a quarrelsome and fretful woman.

2. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.

Honoring God’s Ordained Roles
The reason for the wife’s call to submit is because God has affirmed the husband’s role within their relationship, which reflects Christ’s realtionship to the church. When the wife lovingly submits to her husband she is honoring God and acknowledging the different but equal roles that He ordained. True submitting conveys, obedience, respect, trust and loyalty.
God created Adam first establishing him as the head or head of household - Genesis 2:7
1 Cor. 11:3 -  But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. -
Ephesians 1:22-23 - 22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
This does not mean that the wife is inferior to her husband. It is clear that male and female are both created in the image of God (Gen. 1:27) and that in Christ, where personal worth is concerned, there is “neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:28). However, in the overall scheme of things, God has placed all of us in differing positions of authority and submission. The man may be in authority at home but submissive at work. The woman may be in submission at home and in authority at work. The point is, all social order depends on people’s willingness to work together and ability to determine who is the head of certain endeavors. God’s intention is that the husband be the head of the relationship with his wife.
6. How do you feel about God’s role for wives so far?
God is Protecting Wives
Paul mentioned that Christ is the saviour of the church. What does savior mean? Answer: someone who rescues something from danger or violence; especially used of Christ as the one who rescued His people from their sins and the resulting danger of judgment.
The wife is to submit to her own husband not all husbands. Can you imagine having to be submissive to all men.
God cares enough to protect wives by giving husbands the role of taking care of, providing, and carrying the responsibilites of the entire family.

3. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

The Ultimate Example
Paul explains that both, husbands, and wives take the example from the rolemodel of Christ and the Church; and because of this the wife should submit in everything to their husbands. The phrase “in every thing” is clearly limited to things pertaining to home relations. Even in this respect allegiance to Christ is the higher obligation , and always take precedence over the lower.
7. Who is the ultimate example of Submitting? and Why? Answer: Christ.
