What Does The Bible Say?
1 Samuel 16
Now the Lord said to Samuel, “You have mourned long enough for Saul. I have rejected him as king of Israel, so fill your flask with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I have selected one of his sons to be my king.” (1 Samuel 16:1 NLT)
6 When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed!” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 8 Then Jesse told his son Abinadab to step forward and walk in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “This is not the one the Lord has chosen.” 9 Next Jesse summoned Shimea, but Samuel said, “Neither is this the one the Lord has chosen.” 10 In the same way all seven of Jesse’s sons were presented to Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.” 11 Then Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?”“There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.”“Send for him at once,” Samuel said. “We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.” 12 So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes. And the Lord said, “This is the one; anoint him.” 13 So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah. (1 Samuel 16:6–13 NLT)
God sees people differently than we do.
1 My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help? 2 Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer. Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief. 3 Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. (Psalm 22:1–3 NLT)
6 But I am a worm and not a man. I am scorned and despised by all! 7 Everyone who sees me mocks me. They sneer and shake their heads, saying, 8 “Is this the one who relies on the Lord? Then let the Lord save him! If the Lord loves him so much, let the Lord rescue him!” (Psalm 22:6–8 NLT)
17 I can count all my bones. My enemies stare at me and gloat. 18 They divide my garments among themselves and throw dice for my clothing. (Psalm 22:17–18 NLT)
God uses our circumstances to mold us.
70 He chose his servant David, calling him from the sheep pens. 71 He took David from tending the ewes and lambs and made him the shepherd of Jacob’s descendants— God’s own people, Israel. 72 He cared for them with a true heart and led them with skillful hands. (Psalm 78:70–72 NLT)
God sees us differently than we see ourselves.
5 For David had done what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight and had obeyed the Lord’s commands throughout his life, except in the affair concerning Uriah the Hittite. (1 Kings 15:5 NLT)
Though not perfect, our lives should reflect a history of obedience to God.
How Can You Obey:
During a time of testing, keep your faith in Christ.
Question 1 of 5
God put David through a spiritual boot camp to develop him into a man who truly trusted God. Tell about a time when God put you through a spiritual boot camp.
Question 2 of 5
David had to wait 14 years between being anointed and actually sitting in the throne. Have you ever had to wait to receive something you felt was God’s plan for your life? What kept you hopeful during the wait?
Question 3 of 5
King David’s life was characterized as a man who obeyed God’s commandments. In your life, who is someone that you characterize as a person who obeyed God's commandments during their life, and why?
Question 4 of 5
Are there areas in your life where you don't see yourself the way God sees you? Why do you feel that way?
Question 5 of 5
David wrote his thoughts in his journal which we now call the Psalms. Have you ever written out your feelings, both your joys and frustrations in following God? How do you think that could help you?
