Welcome/Introduce self
Pray...
Heavenly Father, please prepare our hearts and our minds to receive your word today.
Give us the grace to have understanding and the wisdom to apply it to our lives.
Grant us faith and repentance that we might walk closer to you.
We love you Jesus.
You’re the reason that we sing.
You’re the reason that we gather.
You’re the reason we have hope in this broken world
Amen.
The text.
1 Peter 1:13 ESV
Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 1:14–16 ESV
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:17–19 ESV
And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
1 Peter 1:20–21 ESV
He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
1 Peter 1:22–23 ESV
Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
1 Peter 1:24–25 ESV
for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
1 Peter 1:13 ESV
Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Therefore
1 Peter 1:3–5 ESV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
1 Peter 1:13 ESV
Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Therefore… set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ (Psalm 4)
Psalm 4:6 ESV
There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!”
Psalm 4:7 ESV
You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound.
Psalm 4:8 ESV
In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
1 Peter 1:13 ESV
Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Preparing your minds for action… (gird up the loins of your mind)
We are so distracted, so dumbed down, so amused.
What are we doing to be prepared to live as Exiles? Church, huddle, Bible study, sermon audio, worship
Being sober-minded
Clear-headed, self-controlled
It matters what you put in the tank...
“I make my own sandwich”
We do stupid things and wonder why we’re in the situations we’re in...
We put our hope in stupid things, then act surprised when those things fail us.
1 Peter 1:14–16 ESV
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
As obedient children… act out of identity (Jn 1:12-13)
Do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance… IGNORANCE (Eph 4:17)
Ephesians 4:17–24 ESV
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. But that is not the way you learned Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
1 Peter 1:14–16 ESV
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Ignorance
Passions… we can become very passionate about sin
Starts as a curiosity, and eventually we are controlled by it
What will you believe?
He who called you is holy… HOLY (What does it mean?)
God is different than you
He is pure, we are a reflection
You shall be holy, for I am holy. (1 Pet 2:9, Lev 19:2)
We pursue holiness (purity) because we belong to God who is pure
God sets us apart as a pure people
1 Peter 2:9 ESV
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Judges impartially… everything will be brought to account
Conduct yourselves with fear… be humble, take sin seriously...
We try to teach kids not to be spoiled, to understand that everything comes with a cost
Knowing you were ransomed… this is why we are humble (fear), and take sin seriously
Not gold/silver, precious blood of Christ
Lamb, without blemish or spot… Innocent, perfect, without defect
1 Peter 1:20–21 ESV
He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Foreknown… (Acts 2:23, Rev 13:8)
Acts 2:23 ESV
this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
but since when has this been the plan?
Revelation 13:8 ESV
and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.
1 Peter 1:20–21 ESV
He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Made manifest… Even though God always knew, there was revelation given
God is not surprised by your sin, he launched a rescue mission for your soul before you were even born.
SO THAT your faith and hope are in God… this was the purpose of the revelation, for YOU
1 Peter 1:22–23 ESV
Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
You have been saved, so your love should be different form the world
WHY, you’re born again,
Imperishable
Through the living and abiding word of God… the gospel
1 Peter 1:24–25 ESV
for “All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
Flesh is like grass, perishable
The word of the Lord lasts forever
What is the word?.. the good news, the gospel
