Hey, good morning. Everyone. Good morning. We're going to jump into the final teaching in our Discover series. If you remember the last two weeks we've been doing a series called discover discover church was the first week. We discussed the importance of people and relationships. That church is a group of people who seek first the kingdom of God and then last week our friend Russo is up here Unforgettable. He stood on this stage and recited the sermon of the mount word for word by memory. I will never forget that the coolest 10-15 minutes of my life, but the big take away from that teaching was simply this that Jesus is the greatest teacher who is Ever Walked on this planet. Yes, he is Lord. Yes, he is savior of but he is also Rabbi teacher are mentor and teacher and how to live in his teachings are meant to be cryptic or mystical they're meant to be I stood and followed and so we say that our redeemers church often that we intend to be Disciples of Jesus meaning we spend time with Jesus we learn from Jesus and then we go and do the things Jesus did and as I say that I'm getting even more excited for our Matthew series that is coming up in Advent actually just in a few weeks. We're going to really pour into those two things from discover church and discover discipleship seeking first the kingdom of God and becoming a disciple of Jesus and what that looks like, but now we're in the third week of our Discovery series and it is discover worship. Discover worship and I'm just going to start off by saying I've done a lot of music in my lifetime some of you might know this but I was signed to spell records in my it was a Christian music group of four hot moment. My songs are on the radio and I got the two of the country which is pretty fun. Now. Why do I say that? It's not so that you can look up pictures right now on Google and see my hair flowing all the way down to my shoulders. It's it's not even that I'm any good at music by this morning's one of those like obvious things are it's like, okay Sheila this guy's good, you know, like I will be I will be like the Steve Kerr to Michael Jordan any day you no accept the reality is I would be like the practice squad or like the film coached to shoe a leading worship.

But honestly that's been my take on music like I have a lot of experience and it where I've got to be in the greenroom literally with some incredible voices on the topic of worship and music. So I've been in those conversations. I've studied it. I've literally read every book I possibly can on Modern worship and music and I got some startling conclusions some stuff that I believe will come as a surprise to you this morning. So assuming you guys are ready. I'm going to pray one more time just allow us to be focused. I know right now just from watching live streams at home. It's it's a little strange, right? You know, I imagine like my kid running around and you're trying to figure out man how much can I focus when my kids are in the room or maybe your spouse is just in another room doing something entirely different like laundry or dishes, or maybe it's Tuesday right now. You're listening to this cuz you're deaf house in you're on the road driving down to California and your truck. I don't know whatever it is left allow ourselves to commit fully to this time. Just so you know, what yeah, there's a little bit of awkwardness here, but I'm going to commit I'm going to focus. I'm going to get my attention to God and I'm simply going to say God this is strange, but I'm ready for you to move and speak and and do things that I wouldn't have anticipated. So father again, we just we pray that we give you this time right now. We surrender ourselves. We push to the awkwardness and we just say we're here for you. Holy Spirit or curious what you want to do now in this setting? And then go back in the 90s you guys remember the 19 hundreds like saying it that way specifically the 1990s. There is a English group of musicians from a small coastal town in the small charismatic church that wrote and release a number of Records under the name The Cutting Edge the songs of Earth from the simple idea that what if worship looks like you to concerts now today that seems like that's kind of what they look like, but at this time in the 1990s, like that was like nobody did that it was really cool and it exploded just in this little coastal town it became a huge thing of people from all over England. We're driving to see this band perform worship music by U2 concert. So big stage lights smoke like everything was just a full-on. It was awesome. That band many of you know, it's now known as Delirious or I don't know if they even threw her under that name anymore. It's been so long songs. Like I Can Sing of Your Love Forever by sum of the first songs. I ever learned on guitar and a number of other Life Worship leaders going to join that move and I think if I can refuse Here I Am to Worship here. I am to bow down Matt Redman. I'm coming back to the house all this is like classic songs that we saying all the time apart of the same movement. This idea of worshipping sort of like a U2 concert didn't just stay in England, but you saw happening all of the world not longer after we saw a similar thing happened at a conference for college students in Austin, Texas called passion. That's right Louie Giglio David Crowder Chris Tomlin. Chris Tomlin. Come on. Holy is the Lord God. Mm. It was like every Sunday was that song so good simultaneously on the other side of the planet. You have Hillsong happen in Sydney Australia following a similar powder and Darlene Zschech Shout to the Lord all the Earth keep singing the same key that you wrote songs Like My Redeemer Lives.

Or today, you're more familiar with like Hillsong United. You call me out upon the waters, you know, all these like awesome songs, right the hit that's what I call him as a worship play dance like we're going to play the hits this week and we do some of those songs now here we are today 20/20 and myself and many would argue where in the wake of that mimic not much has changed worshipping through music looks still like a U2 concert fact. I was at a U2 concert years ago. We had a ginormous like LED screen the size of a football stadium the size of the football stadium the Seattle Seahawks football stadium. I was at this concert. It was amazing and then I work for a church down and in San Diego and guess what they want to do. Get a giant LED screen the size of the auditorium and they did and I love worship with a massive LED. I mean, so I'm just letting you know like this. This is real. We literally live in the wake of what YouTube is doing.

But myself and many others would add worship while being so popular never more popular right now or should music. It's also never more been misunderstood. You follow me the well worship music is super popular. It's never been misunderstood more than I believed right now in 2020. There's a problem. So in the last 30 years is becoming widely accepted among the western church and largely Protestant white church has to refer to worship and music as the same thing. I'm saying here worshipping music at the same thing put another way. We use the word worship as a synonym for music don't we write was worship good or bad this morning? What are we really talking about? There was worship good or bad was a music good or bad right worship. That's the best kind of hard to get a pulse on, you know, like I alluded to earlier somebody could be watching this this livestream two days later and having this incredible moment in their car. Is there driving? No, I'm not going to know that she was not going to know that's not going to know that light worship is kind of hard to understand if it's good or bad the music. Oh, yeah, we can we can figure that out real quick.

It is. I see this little mix up all the time worship being synonymous with music. You see it on websites. You see it on records announcements label genres Publications training conferences. We even use the word worship as a title for guys like me at least the worship pastor. And what we really mean is he's a guy that spends a lot of time doing music and drinking coffee, right? He's a worship Pastor the assumption is that worship stands for the music stuff at church think we can all agree assumption. Is that worship stands for the music stuff at church? In fact, most of us would probably describe our best worship experiences as a time that involved music. I don't think I'm alone on this. Our best worship experience if I were to ask you. Hey, what was the what was the most intense? Awesome time? You had worshipping God right now, you're probably thinking of you has it was that one time and you screw boy went to go see Phil Wickham play at our church or something. There's just as cool moment where he was singing this song and I just felt like I was encountering God. Whatever it is, I mean for me probably was driving in my car. I remember it's probably countless times that I just been driving listening to a serum CD a certain worship song and just been brought to tears. We have these incredible moments and worship through music. Now don't get me wrong. Worshipping three music is definitely worship. Okay, it's part and parcel, right? We can worship God through music. But unfortunately today all of worship has been narrowed down to just that the music stuff we do at church. Put another way worship has been consumed by music. And if that hasn't let you down yet. at some point it will If worship is only music, it's going to let you down.

When worship becomes an experience a thing that we can choose to buy or consume it eventually Falls flat. I think of my buddy Nate. For Him worship was his playlist that he made on his his iPhone, right? You put together all the songs that he loved and he would take us with them and listen to it while he's on his runs or innings in the car just where he was and it just allowed him to encounter God but what happened for Nate is eventually like often with music the songs kind of got old or kind of got boring or felt stale and I'll set it didn't do the trick and a new music that was coming out just wasn't his flavor. You know, it wasn't a style. What snake going to do now worship has let him down in a cent. How is he going to worship for another friend. His name is Benny played bass in the worship band. And for gun, he had all these incredible experiences like the ones I kind of alluded to earlier. We're just man I was at the sponsor. I was at church and I was worth feeding through music and it's just like this, and encounter with God will for Benny's going to Portland Community College down the street and he started learning about biology and How likely experience certain things all the endorphins that our brains a lot of that can be triggered by music and lights and so he put two and two together. I said wait, Was I even encounter in God or was it just this experience that was created for me that you to experience was God even that was God even real? And he had a hold deconstruction on it. And is Faith all around worship music. For myself, it was in high school just simply being called out for living a dualistic lifestyle. I was going to leave worship and I was leading worship a lot and I was getting pretty good at it. But close friends to me notice. Hey Michael, I hear you singing songs of God by how much you love him. But I also see you living a life. That doesn't follow the patterns of Jesus. They didn't say it like that cuz they are also in high school is probably a little more crude. news true and in fact it led me to search my heart and go. You know what I need to put the guitar down for a minute. I need to put the guitar down. Stop leading worship and I did for almost an entire year just so I could get centered on worshipping God myself. Not just being a worship leader. I think you guys can relate this probably been some moment or worship music has let you down. Now a church that knows how to sing but not worship wants all of the emotions or what I call the feels without ever living into the storyline of scriptures. What is that look like that means we're going to do something about God's faithfulness, but we're not going to be obedient to the scriptures or we're going to sing about God's love, but we're going to refuse to love difficult people. We can sing about Freedom the living slave to all sorts of addictions. We can sing about Victory, but we remain defeated by our past failures and our fear of death.

We can sing about peace and refuge. We do that all the time here while still being wrecked by anxiety because we're too busy and refuse to own Less in our life. And finally, we can sing about following Jesus and the cross we did it last week. Even I have decided to follow Jesus the cross before me the world behind me we can sing about that but then never make any sacrifices of our own or do anything for that matter that would make us uncomfortable or cause us to take a loss.

In overtime cuz I have observed this in my own life and lights around me. I've I just started calling it karaoke worship cuz that's what it feels like there's words on the screen and we're just kind of going along with some song that does or doesn't fit our life. Karaoke worship. There's no authenticity Beast beneath the noise again the song lives on a screen. Liz on the screen and not in our soul not in our holistic being in what we do. Another way. It's a soundtrack for a movie that doesn't exist. Right, like I'm guessing the new Top Gun soundtrack that probably came out in the movie still hasn't come out like I want to get into this, but I've got no context for these song. The worship must be about something more. Worship must be about something more and the good news this morning is that there are entire books in the scripture devoted Dedicated To Worship. Go to worship with music and without music and this morning. We're going to look deeply at what it looks like to worship without music. God clearly doesn't want one without the other you remember this Isaiah passage, Isaiah 29:13. The Lord says these people come near me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. This is Isaiah prophesying God's desires and God in contention that the songs coming out our mouths match what's going on in our hearts? He's tired of our lip service. God is wondering what we really commit ourselves to him. How God wants our whole heart he wants our mind he wants our soul. He wants a relationship with us. He's been trying to get our attention for a while and he really doesn't want us to really wants to take us deeper. But God even knows that he can't do it with music alone until the prophets in biblical times gave us warnings. It's all over the scripture the song writers of our time have given us warnings. I think of like Matt Redman coming back to the Heart of Worship. That's a prophetic warning for the church. So the question really is and the question is right now, wherever you're listening where you're sitting will we listen? Willie listen to These Warnings will we hear the warning and then change our Behavior if we do Adventure sorry, if we don't eventually our worship will fall flat. It will let you down at some point the less I ask the question again. What is worship? Let's discover worship. This is a journey that I've been in and I want to share this with you guys. It's so good. It starts here though ready for a surprise the word worship. The English word worship is actually nowhere in your Bible. I remember studying this about 10 years ago in theology. I was just where is the word worship and I and I look up and the Hebrew concordance if you can but wait, there's a different work there. In fact, we have to think about this English word of worship. Did you know that the English word for worship not being robbed in the Bible already said that to the definition of the word worship to give worth. It's an old Anglo-Saxon word. It's a word driving from those two words worth and ship to give work and that English word is not at all the same as biblical worship at the definition could be used to generalize all things worship. So truthfully, none of us even use the word and that way like to give Worth to something. I don't really work cuz if we did that right what like I give birth to my cat, you know, I don't worship my cat though, right? I give Worth to him. I want to keep him alive. So I figured I better put those Nails the other day, but I don't worship my cat. I saw that doesn't really work for us as a definition of worship something even better and I love this the Google definition it says that worship is the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity that is important. Just giving Worth to something but worship is giving Worth to a deity I think that's a little bit closer to what we need to use as a working definition of worship thank you Google The worship is more complex than simply giving worth. What is that all that worship? Is it something we feel or do to tell God something? He already knows about himself.

We still need to look at how scripture defines worship. Let's do that. How does scripture to find worship you got your Bibles with you? This is a good time. First place we're going to open up to is actually 2nd Kings chapter 17 verse 35 second Kings chapter 17 verse 35 and just keep your finger there for a second. How does Scripture Define worship you guys remember the movie Princess Bride 1987 The Princess Bride one of the best movies of all time for sure with some quotes from that. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father prepare to die. Like come on, right or is that little guy that keeps saying it's inconceivable Inigo, Montoya you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means you guys remember that. I love that movie. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means that's my response when I hear people talk about worship. You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means. So we're going to discover what it means. We're going to read the scriptures help us to find what worship is and there's all sorts of words is what you need to know. There's all sorts of words translated from the original Hebrew and Greek that mean worship or fit into that category. None of these words mean what you think they mean but they're not inconceivable. So the scriptures are specific and just as a starting point, we're going to get into 3 of those words the three most common words. You'll see translated in English to worship are in your by veteran your Bible are these three one to fear the lord to to bow down three to serve so these are the three most common words. You'll see translated to worship running to look at that here in a second finger break down on that word to fear. It's Yar in Hebrew. It's similar to the Greek word Sobo my to buy a vowel or hitch Nova and Hebrew similar to proskuneo in the Greek to serve a bod and Hebrew or similar to the trail or the tergeo in Greek. And these words have a lot of different meetings uses themes in their complex and their original language. They really are you could consequently translate them in different ways. For example to fear could be the Reverend at the bow would be submission to serve could be Ministry or how about to be in awe of God as fear or to pay honor to God when we bow down to him or two to work right to serve God through work. So you see I can translate these words in different ways. But let's look at what they do in the scriptures. Let's see these words in action. So you've opened up the second Kings chapter 17 35 vs 35 And here we going to see that first word fear translate a number of different ways. I'm reading from the NIV and this is what it says. When the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites. He commanded them do not worship. That word is fear any other gods or bow down to them or serve them? This is interesting by way cuz you get all three things right there fear bow down and serve or sacrifice to them blue extra word added on there. But the Lord who brought you out of Egypt with Mighty power and arts outstretched arm is the one you must worship. Again that Word Worship in English is from Yaar to fear God in Hebrew to him you shall bow down and to him offer sacrifices. You must always be careful to keep the decrees and regulations laws and commands. He wrote for you do not do this again worship. The word is actually fear other gods do not forget the Covenant that I made with you and do not worship other gods, but where do you think it is? Fear. Yes. Okay. You're following me. Rather Worship the Lord your God it is he who will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies? Okay. So just a little snapshot there. Let's have a takeaway Wow Wee Wee Sing Jesus. You are Lord. You are the way the truth and the life. And yet the way we walk through life is far more influence or I would argue influence or informed or shaped by culture Netflix social media or expectations are parents or appears put on us. Do we actually fear? Do we actually worship God and life if The Way We Walk our reverence doesn't resemble his ways are we worshippers or not? The worship looks like fear. It looks like walking through life with reverence for God not the powers of this world reverence for God not the powers of this world. That's fun. You guys ready for the next word imagine and everybody going to love this one. These are like the most next to place is going to look really popular places in scripture. Next week comes from Genesis 22, you can turn their Genesis 22 verses 4 and 5 on the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance and he said to his servants stay here with a donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will We Will and then we will come back to you. Sorry we will worship and then we will come back to you that word worship is not what you think. It means in fact, I've heard tons of teachings on this place in scripture and they tie in Abraham's worship to the sacrifice that he was about to give with his son. By the way. If you don't know this story if you're new to the scriptures are like Abraham sacrificing Sign it so we don't have time to go there. It's a cool story. He doesn't actually end up sacrificing his son spoiler alert. But that word worship there. Do you know what it actually means? It means to bow down. It's our second word. So despite all the teachers I heard on all yeah, I wouldn't go there to make that teaching. I wouldn't go there to make that point because here is actually falling down Abraham in that moment with his son Bow Down and Worship to God. Crazy or chronologically that is the first place in your English Bible that you see the word worship and it's to bow down. I find that interesting when we apply that. Because I've been in so many worship Gatherings right worship music Gathering or babbling is not the thing that's happening. We are sitting in our seats We Sip our coffee or we stand our hands or maybe folded or in our pockets. And this is our posture and worship. What would it look like if worship for us was in the posture of bowing down to her knees?

interesting

Okay, let's look at that last example probably the most quoted verse by worship music leaders. Today is Romans 12:1 Romans 12:1. Therefore I urge you brothers and sisters in view of God's mercy to offer your bodies a Living Sacrifice. Holy and pleasing to God. This is your true and proper. Worship worship some of your Bible translations have actually put the correct word there, which is service to serve.

The Greek word is the trail which means which makes perfect sense actually. Paul's big Point here is not sacrificing your body and worship may be lifting your hands for like the entire song until your muscles start getting out. I'm sacrificing my body and worship, you know know in fact his point that he's making in the build-up to this verse is that the church serves one another how cool is that? He's staying your worship is your ability to serve the people that you're with that you sit Within These Rose every week. That is the kind of worship that God wants from you. That's cool. That's also very convicting. Because for me I don't know about you, but for me, it's way easier to sing about songs about Jesus serving us and God serving our needs than it is to actually discomfort myself to serve my neighbor.

Worship looks like sacrificing myself for the benefit of the people around me. I think we have that on the slide. I'm just going to say it one more time worship looks like sacrificing myself for the benefit of the people around me.

You know, all these words to fear is about to serve. I think Todd different worship leaders and schools over times. I've said I compared it to like the five love languages you guys are four of the five love languages write like Gifts of service or giving time to somebody like we all kind of have our own language. I want to put the slide out to you. What is God's love language? What is God's lovely? What is the way that we can best love and honor God? And I'll call your mind to these places in scripture. It's serving one another that is what pleases God more than anything else to serve one another to bow to him to actually put our physical body part of our soul in a position that reflects what's going on in worldly. To fear God to walk in his ways to be obedient to him. These are the things that God feels loved by. He likes her songs to I think he does want us to sing to him. If you really want to show your affection your worship for God. What cities are there ways? Here's a fun fact for you. Did you know that calling the church Gathering a service actually came from this idea of worship. Like I don't know. It's like I grew up at a church where it like what it was called the Sunday service like you showed up to service. Now. We've intentionally change it to the Gathering semantic change on purpose to get the church to realize that we are gathering of people not like just a building but that original idea of calling Church a service came right from here and it wasn't so that you can be served. It wasn't serving your needs. It was to allow the church to come together to serve one another. How cool is that? It was good. What is it just the beginning again? We looked at three words that fit into the larger category of what worship is and we've only explored a few examples of how that plays out in scripture. But do you guys see you see what I'm seeing here? You see that worship is much bigger concept than simply the music stuff that we do. I hope you're getting that now. Before we close, you know, just kind of Landing a plane. I don't want our church to be one that gets caught up like picking each other apart over the semantics of worship, you know, I could be really easy to do and yes, I think we can make some simple changes and how we talked about worship. So what I mean by like picking people apart is, you know, you're probably going to run into somebody soon realized. Hey man, how was worship this morning? Well, actually we can't really know what worship was like, but the music sounded great because she was leaving of course and don't have those conversations. Okay. So how does this change our worship? Let's just ask this conversation or ask this question. How does this change our worship in my point is simple worship does not equal music. I want that to be in your mind this morning worship does not equal. music

how can we change will certainly us as leaders and pastors and we've done this has been really intentional about not calling the music part worship says we're going to continue in worshipping through music or just adding the word music to worship worship. Music. How is the worship music this morning? It was dope shoe let you know like we can we can do little things with our language that are good in that falls on us as Leaders. It's important that we use the right language so that we stop using the word worship His holy mean music. We need to be clear in conversation. It's simple as that. Our entire Gathering is worship its teaching it's communion. It's giving giving of our time and our resources and our energy is praying all of that is worship and what I love about this is that if our church if redeemers can grass this we will literally have a worship Revival We will have a worship Revival here in Redmond and it'll be without changing any of the songs. How cool is that? Right? I'm going to change the songs on you those. I'm just saying cuz I don't want him to get stale or boring. But that's what a true worship Revival looks like and that's what it looks like in scriptures to that's what it looks like in the scriptures. I'm going to leave you with this quote. This is probably one of the most haunting and helpful quotes. I've seen in a long time comes from aw Tozer. It says the church that can't worship must be entertained. The church that can't worship must be entertained. Think about that for a moment Church. They can't worship must be entertained. What that is saying, is that a true that can worship. Doesn't need to be entertained by great music. It doesn't need to be entertained by even a great teaching. But it's a people committed to one another and committed to following God in these ways right serving one. Another bowing down to God sacrificing is what church that can worship what I love about that most as a worship leader is that I know when my life is in place that way when I'm obedient walking in the ways of God when I get to church and I'm ready to sing. I'm like it explodes on my God is awesome. I can't wait to praising through music. I can't wait like it's overflowing but it's bubbling over so to speak. I think I don't think I know that's what I want for redeemers. I know that's what Brett wants. I know that's what all the leaders want. We don't want you guys coming in on Sundays and simply gone. I hope they will make me into a place where I just get so excited and start worshipping God. No, we want you guys to enter his courts with praise and thanksgiving with gratefulness so that when you get in here and your Gather By the church, you just am. I'm going to wish I'm going to lift my hand. I'm going to shout. I'm going to sing loud even when I don't know the song I'm going to sing loud like that is a that is a church that knows how to worship. So how do you choose to worship shoes going to come back on up here? I'm going to respond through worshiping and music.

Here, I got a little bit more time. I'm going to tell you guys a story.

a lot of different stories I could tell I just felt like this is one that Maybe gets up the right example for us especially in the context of being at home right now. When I was in my teenage years we had this thing called Tuesday night worship out of Applegate fellowship. And it was awesome. One thing that was most awesome about it. Was that the Band rocked they were so good and we turn the lights off in the whole Sanctuary. So nobody could see you again. Just like we've your eyes out and worship God and get down on your knees and just go for it, you know is he's incredible nights of worship answering music and I would go every week. I mean, I love it. I idolized what's guys leading us and worship music as well, but there is a problem you see Every night before I would start I'd be at home and I'd eat dinner with my family and I had like one chore and it was to do dishes. Eileen F. I used going to this worship night as an excuse to get out of doing dishes. Sorry. I got to run to jump in the car and drive out to worship night and it wasn't until I was 19 still living with my parents that I finally clicked. Getting ready to go out to one of those exact midweek worship nights and I saw the dishes and I stall my stepmom.

and I was like, oh what is more pleasing to God? In this moment, what is more pleasing to God that I jump in the car and go worship and sing songs to him or that I serve my stepmom in that scenario and do the dishes. I mean I was waiting in the house for free. I should have just done it. Shirley Wright. I remember doing dishes at night and it was just like I get it Lord. I get it now that this is a more pleasing packed for you. This is a more pleasing act of worship then singing a hundred songs tonight.

I don't know what this looks like for you guys in your scenario. It might literally be that this morning. You're like, oh my with my breakfast I got to go do dishes do the dishes. Okay, but I want you to connect the dots. You're not just serving or doing dishes. You are worshipping God you are serving another person in your household. This is just one practical example. I can give you guys but let's begin to be created with our worship. What could worship look like if it wasn't solely defined by music. we're going to discover all these ways we can worship without music that is my hope and prayer for the church so let's hear an act on the warnings of the prophets no longer giving lip service to God but upholding Justice and righteousness like Amos chapter 5 verse 21 says let's make worship music the soundtrack of the movie of our life repeat that let's make worship music we do the music stuff let's let that be an appropriate soundtrack for the movie the story of our life

Song that doesn't live on a screen.

They're going to respond. I asked you would actually leave that song by Matt Redman coming back to the Heart of Worship.

And this is our time to confess to God to repent even that's where you're at like God. I have made worship all about the music stuff and I'm ready to start living in obedience to your ways.

So would you pray with me and take a deep breath?

Holy Spirit

Jesus father Yahweh

We want to worship you in a way that blesses you.

We want to bring you more than a song.
