Names and titles

What’s in a name, what significance does a title have? Does your name reflect you, does a title define you?
In the biblical days names meant much, they were given to a child in hopes that the child would grow into the reflection of the name.
Let me offer you just a few names:
Abraham = Father of many
Aaron = Exalted
Daniel = God is my judge
David = Beloved
Jedediah = Friend of God
(insert illustration) Rick, ricky, Richard; Jay, Jaybird, James) How about Grandma, Mimi, Gma? I’m a papa not a grandfather.
Those are names and some titles but they don’t totally identify who we are do they? This morning we are look at the Lord of all, Our Redeemer, Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 10:12 NASB95
12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him;
We are composed of Mind, Soul, Body and Spirit and they are what make us who we are. A title may say what we are, a name may identify who we are in the body. This morning may we look at the Lord of all, Jesus Christ our Redeemer, the name above every other name (Php2:10-11)
Philippians 2:10–11 NASB95
10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
(Transition) so may we look at these things this morning:
Lord Jesus Christ
Jesus: Our Lord
Jesus our Redeemer

Lord Jesus Christ

So, what is our mighty God’s name? We know the “I AM” and in the flesh, is it Lord Jesus Christ? Let’s look at this together.
Lord Jesus Christ is not the proper name of Jesus:
Jesus is the birth name (Lk1:31)
Luke 1:31 NASB95
31 “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.
(Insert:Jesus is the name picture here)
So the name Jesus; let me expand on that for a moment or two: in the Hebrew it is translated from Joshua (or Yeshuah) and that means “God is salvation”
That name Yeshuah is a combination of the short name of Yahweh “Yah” which means God, this is the passive quality of God. And then Shuah which means “to save, save alive, rescue”
Jesus also called Immanuel (Mt1:23)
Matthew 1:23 NASB95
23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
Well, scripture defines the name Immanuel. So don’t need to go further on that.
(Transition) So the name, Jesus, Yeshua, Immanuel are the names given, but we need to look more at Lord Jesus Christ.
Lord: That is His title, referring to His deity
This is Greek word “Kurios”
Hebrew word “Yhwh” or “Jehovah”
Also you may see the informal name “Adonai”
Definition of Lord: Master, one having authority over another.
I want to go into authority, since His title Lord speaks of authority may we grab information from the scripture regarding authority.
Lord/Authority:
Our Lord’s authority comes from God (Mt28:18)
Matthew 28:18 NASB95
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Our Lord’s authority can forgive sins (Mt9:6)
Matthew 9:6 NASB95
6 “But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your bed and go home.”
Our Lord’s authority is far above all authority (Eph1:21; Co2:10)
Ephesians 1:21 NASB95
21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
oh wait, better put in context
Ephesians 1:18–19 NASB95
18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might
Ephesians 1:20–21 NASB95
20 which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
His authority that came from God that is far above all!
Our Lord’s authority has always been (Jude1:25)
Keeping it in context
Jude 24–25 NASB95
24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, 25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.
God given authority before there was time was in the son, our Lord, Lord Jesus, but be careful for:
Ignoring His authority is detrimental to you (Rom13:2)
Romans 13:2 NASB95
2 Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.
Now that we have the Lord’s authority established may we look at who:
He is Lord of:
He is Lord of heaven and earth (Act17:24)
God gave him authority and made Him authority over heaven and earth and everything that is in it.
He is Lord of the church (Ep5:23; Col1:18)
He is the head of the Church, the one having authority over the church
He should be the Lord of the temple, YOU (1Cor3:16)
You are God’s temple if the Holy Spirit dwells in you and that makes Him Your Lord who has power and authority over you and in you.
For the Lord dwells in You (Rom8:9-11)
Romans 8:9–10 NASB95
9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.
Romans 8:11 NASB95
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Is He the Lord of your life? Does His Spirit dwell in you? Have you fully surrendered all to Jesus to make Him Lord of your life, consider these things:
In looking at your spiritual house:
(insert recreation room picture here)
Have you surrendered your recreation room? - you know the things you do for pleasure?
(Insert Dining Room Picture here)
How about your dining room- the place where you feed your appetite, Are we feeding with wordly things or godly things, We know what it says in Mt4:4
Matthew 4:4 NASB95
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’ ”
(Insert Library-study picture here)
How about your library/study: Are you filling that with things that help you grow closer to God or closer to the world?
Look around the room, look at the magazines, the books
Oh, don’t forget the computer that may sit in there too
(insert Kitchen picture here)
What about the kitchen: In most households this is the center of the house, everything comes and goes through there, this is your mind, what are you allowing into your mind, what are you storing in your mind. Have you surrendered your mind to the Lord. Maybe in your house it is the living room, but I think you get the idea.
Colossians 3:1–2 NASB95
1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.
You can look at getting rid of things you can check out Col3:5-8
(insert Bedroom picture here)
Yes even the bedroom, have you surrendered your intimacy to the Lord, in what you do, what you allow yourself to see in the intimate place in your spiritual house, Job said:
Job 31:1 NASB95
1 “I have made a covenant with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin?
Don’t let your eyes look up, covet things of this world.
1 John 2:15–16 NASB95
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
1 John 2:17 NASB95
17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
One more spiritual room, that hall closet; The place you keep everyone from looking into, we don’t want people seeing into this room, maybe there is secret sin that God already knows about that needs to be surrendered
Luke 8:17 NASB95
17 “For nothing is hidden that will not become evident, nor anything secret that will not be known and come to light.
Let Jesus be the Lord of all (Act10:36; Rom10:12-13)
Acts 10:36 NASB95
36 “The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all)—
God sent the prince of peace (Isa9:6) to have peace with God (Rom5:1) and to leave peace (Jn14:27) that surpasses all understanding (Php4:7)
Romans 10:12–13 NASB95
12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; 13 for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
(Transition) Lord is Lord of all, to all who call on his name will be saved and I am going to circle back to that one in a little bit, just keep it in mind for the moment. We have not gotten to Christ, We have spoken on Lord, and Jesus now may I move on to Christ for a few minutes?
Christ - this is his anointed office, position
He came as a prophet to proclaim the message (Mk6:4)
Mark 6:4 NASB95
4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household.”
(expand on what did he come to proclaim)
He came as Priest to bring salvation (Heb9:11)
Hebrews 9:11 NASB95
11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come, He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation;
(expand) because he passed through the heavens, and a new priesthood was established through Him, He is our High Priest!
He came as King to rule and reign for all eternity (Rev17:14)
Revelation 17:14 NASB95
14 “These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful.”
He wants you to be His, called, chosen and faithful and I will expand on that more in a few minutes.
See, His name is important for there is no other name (Act4:12) but what you believe is just as important when you put all three parts together
James 2:1 NASB95
1 My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism.
How do you hold His name? It is the name above every name (Php2:9); is it the name that saves (Act4:12; Act22:16)? Is the name of Jesus precious to you?
Well, we still he more to go:

Jesus our Redeemer!

To redeem is to pay the price for a slave and that is what we were! And praise be to God not who and what we are today.
Jesus paid the price to redeem us (Tit2:14)
He gave Himself for us, to redeem us and to purify us, for good deeds (paraphrase
So, He is our Lord, Creator and redeemer (Isa44:24)
Isaiah 44:24 NASB95
24 Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, and the one who formed you from the womb, “I, the Lord, am the maker of all things, Stretching out the heavens by Myself And spreading out the earth all alone,
(expand on the above)
Our Redeemer lives (Job19:25)
Job came to understand that his redeemer, who is our redeemer lives!
We need to believe, understand and proclaim Him (Ps19:14)
Psalm 19:14 NASB95
14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.
(Expand on above)
He redeemed us with His precious blood (1Pt1:17-19)
He paid the price for our redemption, he wants all to be redeemed. he wants all to call on His name and be saved.
He is calling you today, be saved from this wicked generation if you have not been saved yet. If you have he wants you to remember and treasure your salvation as if it were yesterday and as if your eternal life depended on it!
1 Peter 1:17–18 NASB95
17 If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; 18 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers,
1 Peter 1:19 NASB95
19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.
(Invitation slide- Redeemed-1)
God’s precious Son, Jesus our Redeemer, the Lord of all, paid the price with His very blood that you may be set free from the law of sin and death and that in His name you can have eternal life (Jn20:31) not only have it but know it (1Jn5:8)
(Invitation)
(Song) (Prayer) (Exit)
