Marie Believed (Justification)

How Can We Know?

It is often said that we cannot know whether a person is a believer in Christ or not. Don't judge another person's salvation because only God knows whether or not a person is genuinely in Christ. While I agree with the sentiment, I also believe in the Word of God. Here's what Jesus said about the very idea of knowing true and false people
Matthew 7:16–20 ESV
16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
The evidence of a true believer is found in the fruit of their lives. So, can we know if Marie Shackelford was a believer?
One of Jesus' disciples, John, wrote an entire book centered on believers' knowing they are indeed believers.
Marie liked to mark her Bible. I know some do not do that, but Marie did. The book of first John has an incredible amount of writing in it because, as Marie noted in her Bible, 1 John was written to the Christian, to those who believe.
If you have a Bible, open to 1 John and follow along as we look at Marie’s life through the lens of her noted up Bible

Marie Believed

1 John 1:1–3 ESV
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.
Marie marked this verse and wrote, “Beginning of Christ’s Ministry.”
Marie believed that Jesus was God in human flesh and that he came to dwell with people
In fact, Marie wrote a note in her Bible that says, “Immanuel means God with us.” Marie believed that the God who made us became one of us so that He could bring us eternal life
Why did God do such a thing? I’m glad you asked
Marie marked another verse in her Bible
1 John 1:9 ESV
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
You see, Marie believed that Jesus actually did what He had said he would do
Marie believed that everyone has sinned against God and thereby made themselves an enemy of God
Adam and Eve were the representative humans and they disobeyed the God who made them and committed treason against the sovereign king of the universe, but confession from a penitent heart that truly believes results in forgiveness
