Chapter 1

Deity of Jesus

The introduction of John’s gospel and the reason why he added this prologue (verse 1-16) year’s later was to clarify the deity of Jesus as God and as human.

Vs. 1

1. Beginning ·         Means the beginning origin or pre-existence
   
   
2. WORD

·         “Word” used in chapter 1 of John is the Greek word logos. It means “speaking, a message, or words.”

·         “Logos” was widely used in Greek philosophical teaching and Jewish wisdom literature and philosophy.

Rev 19:13 He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.

1. WITH

·         The word “with” in the Greek suggests “in company with”

1. WAS

·         The word “was” signifies Jesus as part of the Godhead or Trinity.

·         This established Jesus deity.

Philippians 2:3-73 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

Vs. 2

• Christ did not at some point in time come into existence or began a relationship with the Father.

John 17:5 "Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

Vs. 3

·         Jesus created all things according to the Fathers will

John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.

1Co 8:6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him

Col 1:16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things have been created through Him and for Him.

Heb 1:2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.

All Creation was made by the Word in relation with the Father and the Holy Spirit.

All three persons of the Trinity had a part in creation.

·         God the Father

• God said “Let there be …” this a spoken command not a suggestive though or word.

Isaiah 45:18 For thus says the LORD, who created the heavens (He is the God who formed the earth and made it, He established it and did not create it a waste place, but formed it to be inhabited), "I am the LORD, and there is none else.

Revelation 4:11 "Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created."

Genesis 1:2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

Job 33:4 "The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

·         All three used plural

Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

Genesis 11:5 The LORD came down to see the city and the tower (of Babel) which the sons of men had built. 6 The LORD said, "Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. 7 "Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another's speech."
