Hello again and welcome to our 214th episode of Kids Bible Minute. I’m your host Landon Rowell and I’m also the local preacher for the church of Christ in Ramona, OK. I want to thank Bible Way Media, out of the Oologah cofC for giving me the opportunity to do this podcast and each of you for studying God’s Word with me. I enjoy our studies together and look forward to it each week. As always, I want to make certain you have “your” Bible with you so that when I mention a Bible verse you can read that verse for yourself and not just take my word for it. Now most of the time I will read that passage mentioned out loud so it’s best if you pause this podcast when the scripture is mentioned, turn to the verse and read it, then unpause the podcast and read along with me as I read out loud. Today, in our study, I would like to examine what it means to be rich and poor in God’s eyes. Over the last several years I have heard a resounding cry that the gap between the rich and poor, financially speaking, is increasing and thus a call for change. In reality, biblically speaking that is, this is neither here nor there because God has told us there will always be the poor which implies there will also always be the rich (Matthew 26:11). This financial reality is also found in the spiritual realm as well. There will always be the poor and rich concerning spiritual matters and that should be our main concerning with everyone, not their financial matters. Now, why would I say that, because if we are rich spiritually we will have everything we “need” physically given us by God (Matthew 6:25-33). Remember what Paul said in 1 Timothy 6:8.
8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.
This tells us we must focus on being rich in God’s eyes. The church in Laodicea is a great illustration of what it means to be financially rich but spiritually poor.
15 “ ‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
To keep from the being seen like the church in Laodicea and rich in God’s eyes we must place our treasures in heaven.
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
God looks not at our physical appearance but our spiritual or inner appearance, i.e. our heart or soul, and determines if we are rich or not based on that.
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
If we want to be rich in God’s eyes we must “seek our God” and “draw near to him” through his word.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
