DISCIPLES OF CHRIST

Intro. - What does it mean to be called a “disciple of Christ?” The word “disciple” means a “student or liearner.” It is not a name by which we assume to call ourselves. It is, instead, a name, give by Christ, that is intended to say something very precise and specific about the relationship with Himself into which we are called. Because He bestows it, the name and what it means must characterize the lives of all who follow Him. Therefore:
We Can Be Christ’s Disciples Only If We Choose To Live With Him
Discipleship during the time of Christ was characterized by a system that required the choice of a teacher, followed by the pupil going to live with his teacher.
This is what Christ’s first disciples did . . . they were called “to be with Him” (Mark 3:14). They learned by living with Jesus. In no other way could they learn the meaning of love, compassion, kindness, forgiveness, service, trust, prayer, and the joy of fellowship with God.
We Can Be Christ’s Disciples Only If We Choose To Accept His Teachings.
The meaning of the word “disciple” requires that we be students of His Word . . . that we sit at His feet to learn of/from Him. For this Jesus commends Mark (Luke 10:38-42).
We accept His teachings not only by subscribing to doctrinal precepts or lofty ideals, but by relating ourselves to God and others in specific or concrete ways. No understanding of love or forgiveness or kindness is a substitute for the act!
We are His disciples when acceptance of His teachings means obedience to His commands
We Can Be Christ’s Disciples Only If We Choose To Be Disciplined By What We Have Learned.
We can see immediately a relationship between these two workds: “disciple” and “discipline.” To be a “disciple” is to be “one who learns.” To be “disciplined” is “to put into practice what is learned.” We are Christ’s disciples
“By this will all men know that you are my disciples, if you love one another, even as I have love you” (John 13:34-35). We’re His disciples if we practice what He teaches!
Concl. - “Every disciple . . . when he is fully taught, will be like his teacher” (Luke 6:40)!
