Now concerning (7:1; 25; 8:1)
CH. 12, 13, 14 spiritual gifts are talked as part of being in the assembly. Evidently they were divided concerning spiritual gifts
divided - how do we treat the guy that's living with his fathers wife, eating meat sacrificed to idols, Lords supper, spiritual gifts
v. 2-3 pagan oracles and priest and priestess that spoke jibber jabber tongue speaking but it’s different with the Lord
difference/varieties and there is the same
those in Corinth emphasized the differences but Paul emphasized the same Spirit, Lord, & God
gifts - charisma (because it comes from outside of us
ministries - diakonia - service ministry (because its used in service to the Lord in some way)
energema - effects/ activity/workings through each person in different ways (working because God is working through us in some unique way)
v. 6 He is working in all people just in different ways
v. 7 manifestations - all talking about the same thing, different ways in different people
we all do different things to accomplish the one purpose. How and in what ways does the spirit do this? (1 Cor. 12 & 14; Rom. 12; Eph. 4)
1 Corinthians 12:7 NASB95
But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
Ephesians 4:7–12 NASB95
But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it says, When He ascended on high, He led captive a host of captives, And He gave gifts to men.” (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.) And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
use some of the same gifts and some are different v. 28ff & v. 8-10
Rom. 12:3ff
start a list of spiritual gifts each one listed in those passages.
does everyone in your body have to be… body in 1 Cor. 12 Rom. 12 nad Eph. 4 he uses the body
all different
(illustrations - Acts 6:1)
many functions and different gifts given
v. 7 God has given you gift fro the betterment of the body
v. 8-10 wisdom
v. 11 God determines which gifts will be given to each person
1 Corinthians 12:18 NASB95
But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.
1 Corinthians 12:28 NASB95
And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues.
v. 12 one body
v. 13 baptized into the one body we drink of the Holy Spirit and God decides what is given to us. Each one v. 7 Eph. 4 every christian is given some spirtual gift and god decides which one. WHere there some that were only given by the laying on of the apostles hands.
v. 14-25
v. 25 division in the body -
1 Corinthians 11:18 NASB95
For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it.
all members should have care and concern for one another, we are all connected and we are not in competition but cooperation
unity of the body CH. 11-14
v. 31 desire the greater gifts (showy gifts competitive)
Holy Spirit in Paul, John, Luke Acts, then try to mash them in together.
Acts 8:14ff they recieved it because they were baptized verse 12 but they had to lay hands on them (so this is something extra we just don’t know what) no mention of gifts or what manifestation it is. What was it that was given by the h.s. by apostolic laying on of hands. Acts 19:6 tongues and prophecy were transmitted (all we know for sure) 1 Cor. 13: 8ff prophecy, tongues, knowledge. Miracles Mk. 16:20 implied that it passed Heb. 2:2-4
some gifts were for confirming the word, some fro revealing the word and they were done away with
How do you kn ow what gift you have (14:13 pray for it) Lk. 11:13
v. 31 greater gifts later in chapter 14 desire prophecy over tongues, tongues is last on the list. desire and pray for them but there is a more excellent way
Ch. 13 principle for using them, nothing in a thing guns etc. v. 1 tongues of angels 2 Cor. 12:2-4
hyperbole - overstating it
it’s not what you do it how you are using it, are you doing something good with it
principle of love - how will this benefit bless help or give the rest of the body of Christ
v. 4 and following does not tell us what love is but what it does and does not do
v. 5 sexual indecency = acting unbecomingly
v. 6 rejoices with (12:26)
v. 8 gifts come and go but in evertime we need love
done away 8, 10, did away 11
CH. 14
pursue love
be zealous or desire earnestly 12:31
prophecy is a greater gift, why because it builds up helps people
v. 3 edification, exhortation, consolation (goals of the assembly, what are we to accomplish in the assembly)
if your gift is not edifying encouraging or comforting anyone then I’m not doing it in love
How is the assembly affected by what I am doing?
prophecies - direct revelation of God Ex. 4:14-15
2 Pet. 1:20-21; Eph. 3:5
