For Christmas, This year at Grace Chruch we have been thinking about the 4 names of Jesus in the book of Isaiah 9v6.
Isaiah 9:6 NIV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah wrote about a promised saviour of the world,
hundreds of years before Jesus was born.
And we’ve already thought about the extraordinary promises
and prohesys
made about the saviour God to be born as a child,
and how incredible it is that,
Jesus fulilled them ALL!
Christmas is not a time of warm fuzzies, tinsel and turkey -
And Fortunately - it’s not EVEN a time to get together with familiy and friends
As good and important as all those things are.
It is a celebration of the historical man of Jesus,
who we believe to be God himself become man,
so that we might be saved from the sin and evil we know in this world - which we contribute to -
When we thought about Jesus being our
Wonderful Counselor
we realised that Christmas without Jesus,
is far from wonderful - infact it’s very dark.
We saw when we considered Jesus being
Mighty God
That a Christmas without Jesus is one of fear,
For we need the Mighty Creator God on our side - not against us.
Repentant Believers, followers of Jesus we have,
even in a covid filled year,
everything to celebrate!
We have a wonderful counselor who has wisely planned our salvation -
to resuce and deliver us his people into a joyful eternity with Him - our mighty God.
If you’re visiting here - perhaps you’re a once a year at Christmas church attender,
You’re very welcome - and we’re thrilled you’ve joined us -
But don’t miss out on an everyday,
every week
faith and life following our Wonderful and might saviour Jesus.
For we can all - and indeed must.
enjoy his comfort and joy,
throught repeentance and faith.
As the carols proclaim:
Come let us adore him,
Deck the halls,
Tell his Joy to the world,
and as the last verse of our next carol declares:
O holy Child of Bethlehem, Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel.
350 words to this point
The kids can collect their 3rd Chirstmas bauble today,
They’ve had Wonderful Counsellor,
And Mighty God,
And so today is Everlasting Father!
2 words that seem simple - but are amazing when we think about them!
To demonstrate everlasting - I’m going to do something that is amazing!
I’m going to hold a note for a very long time
haaaaaaaaaaaa
Ok - not very impressive - especially if we’re trying to undertsand everlasting!
So now I need some help.
We’re going to do a kind of mexican wave note....
As I point to you, you need to sing that same sound as I did for as long as possible…\
We’ll keep going - so when I get to the end I’ll go this side again...
We could make this noise for ever as team!
But don’t worry - after a while I’ll do this....
wave hands
And we’ll all end our note - Haaa - by shouting
Hallelujuah!
Haaaaaaaa
We could do that forever if we had enough of us, and we could be bothered!
Foreverr never ends!
The incredible thing about Jesus is that he never stops - He is everlasting.
But he doesn’t need a whole big group of people to help Him!
For he is mighty God!
But Isaiah also tells us Jesus is an Everlasting Father!
We don’t often think of Jesus as a Father,
It doesn’t mean he’s God the Father,
It simply means he is like a Father to those he calls his chidlren.
You see Jesus is given God’s people as children to care for and save.
Hebrews in the NT - quotes a bit of Isaiah
Hebrews 2:13 NIV
And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.”
And then goes on to explain that Jesus saves and cares for his children,
who lived in fear, and darkness.
Who, are controlled by the devil.
Most of us have very good earthly Father’s,
who protect us when we’re scared,
Who step in if someone tries to lead us astray.
And if we haven;t had good earthly Father’s,
well that is what we would want isn’t it?
Well that is who we all have in Jesus.
He steps in,
protects us from the devil.
removes our fear,
and cares for us for ever!!
WHy wouldn’t we give our lives to Jesus, our everlasting Father?
That is worth a celebration at Christmas time,
and
That is worth a hallelujah...
Haaaa
