Final week discussing and studying the Advent of Jesus Christ
Galatians 4:4–7 ESV
4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
What is redemption? “gaining or regaining possession of something in exchange for payment.”
A New Year’s resolution is an attempt at redeeming the past year’s failures.
Losing weight is trying to pay back and redeem the dietary decisions of the last year.
Getting out of debt is trying to pay your regular bills as well as well as pay off what was purchased on credit (plus interest!).
Cleaner house/life. (Maybe you even already got into Marie Kondo’s life changing magic of tidying up?) Think about the effort it takes to clean up a big mess: longer than it took to make it!
These are all examples that show you must put in time to undo prior error. Usually, more time than was spent digging the hole to get out.
Want to lose ten pounds? Safe weight loss is about a pound a week, so 10 weeks. When do most people give up NY resolutions? 2.5 weeks
This is how we redeem, but how does God redeem?
By human standards we would need to spend years and years repaying our debt?
By God’s standards, it took 3 days to pay the sins of all God’s saints, past, present, and future. So how did God do it?
Galatians 4:4–5 ESV
4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
God’s redemption gives us the Holy Spirit. v6
Ephesians 1:13–14 ESV
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
God’s redemption gives us freedom from sin. v7a
Romans 6:16 ESV
16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
God’s redemption gives us a divine inheritance. v7b
1 Peter 2:9–10 ESV
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
APPLICATION OF BEING REDEEMED
1 Peter 1:17–19 ESV
17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
“Conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile.”
Do your words and actions reflect being a son or daughter of God?
A few things you may need to do this week:
Commit to a time of Bible study, prayer, or private worship.
Apologize for actions that are not Christ-like.
Use your resources for things that please God instead of yourself. (Do you invest in your relationship with God?)
