Satan’s way
Isaiah 14:12–14 LEB
12 How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of dawn! You are cut down to the ground, conqueror of nations! 13 And you yourself said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise up my throne above the stars of God; and I will sit on the mountain of assembly on the summit of Zaphon; 14 I will ascend to the high places of the clouds, I will make myself like the Most High.’
satan’s pride caused him to to try to be more than he was
to be above all even God
thinking and pleasing only himself
user of people to do dirty work
always trying to destroy the Messiah
satan, the fallen angels ,and the demons with them
out to destroy, corrupt, and mutilate everything precious to the Father

Philippians 2:5–8 LEB
5 Think this in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, existing in the form of God, did not consider being equal with God something to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself by taking the form of a slave, by becoming in the likeness of people. And being found in appearance like a man, 8 he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, that is, death on a cross.
made himself a servant, washing the disciples feet
Philippians 2:9–11 LEB
9 Therefore also God exalted him and graciously granted him the name above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven and of those on earth and of those under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
one exalted himself and was made low
another exalted others above himself. and was made to be above all

The Parable

Pastor Ray Stedman shows us a parable in this account
this was a play to demonstrate what Jesus did and what we should do
V 4  he got up from the dinner and took off his* outer clothing
got up from His throne and took off His royal robes
V 4 and taking a towel, tied it* around himself
put on the clothing of a servant
V 5  Then he poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the feet of the disciples
soon he will be pouring out His blood for the washing away of sin
John 13:6 LEB
6 Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
Peter was appalled that Jesus the Messiah was washing feet, and certainly not his feet
John 13:7–8 LEB
7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will understand after these things.” 8 Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet forever!” Jesus replied to him, “Unless I wash you, you do not have a share with me.”
Nipto- to wash a body part
I don’t want you near me, your feet stink
Your not getting any supper young man until you wash those filthy hands
culture- people bathe (Louo) before going to someones house but because of the sandals..
1 John 1:9 LEB
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, so that he will forgive us our sins and will cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Before we come into the presence of God we need to be cleansed
John 13:9–10 LEB
9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed only needs to wash his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not all of you.”
Peter again swung completely to the other extreme, because of his love for Jesus
I’m glad peter was very outspoken because we are wondering the same thing
you are Bathed (louo), you took a shower
1 Corinthians 6:9–11 LEB
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Neither sexually immoral people, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor passive homosexual partners, nor dominant homosexual partners, 10 nor thieves, nor greedy persons, not drunkards, not abusive persons, not swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And some of you were these things, but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
Titus 3:3–7 LEB
3 For we also were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, enslaved to various desires and pleasures, spending our lives in wickedness and envy, despicable, hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and love for mankind of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not by deeds of righteousness that we have done, but because of his mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we may become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
we are bathed by the blood of Jesus, and all of our sins are forgiven.
but our feet stink sometimes, and to be able to come into the throne room of the Almighty our feet need to be taken care of
John 13:10–11 LEB
10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed only needs to wash his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 (For he knew the one who would betray him; because of this he said, “Not all of you are clean.”)
Judas was not saved, not a believer
Judas foot washing was of no good
John 13:12 LEB
12 So when he had washed their feet and taken his outer clothing and reclined at table again, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done for you?
Jesus after his mission of making an atonement for the sin of man. Returning to His glory
Hebrews 1:2–3 LEB
2 in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the world, 3 who is the radiance of his glory and the representation of his essence, sustaining all things by the word of power. When he had made purification for sins through him, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

The Takeaway

John 13:12–14 LEB
12 So when he had washed their feet and taken his outer clothing and reclined at table again, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done for you? 13 You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you speak correctly, for I am. 14 If then I—your Lord and Teacher—wash your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
what does it mean for Jesus to wash their feet?
To forgive
To serve
To be humble
John 13:15–17 LEB
15 For I have given you an example, that just as I have done for you, you also do. 16 Truly, truly I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you understand these things, you are blessed if you do them.
