Praise God Who is Sovereign Over All
BIG IDEA:

Introduction

Day 1 for man
discovery vs. defined

1. God Made Us - vs. 1-7

vs. 1-3 repeatedly affirm that God finished his work.
God ended - He rested

God certainly did not rest due to weariness; rather, establishing the pattern for man’s work cycle, He only modeled the need for rest. Later, the Sabbath ordinance of Moses found its basis in the creation week (cf. Ex. 20:8–11). The Sabbath was God’s sacred ordained day in the weekly cycle. Jesus said, “The Sabbath was made for man …” (Mark 2:27) and Gen. 2:3 stated that God “sanctified” or set apart the Sabbath day because He rested in it. Later, it was set aside for a day of worship in the Mosaic law (see notes on Ex. 20:8–11). Hebrews 4:4 distinguishes between physical rest and the redemptive rest to which it pointed. Colossians 2:16 makes it clear that the Mosaic “Sabbath” has no symbolic or ritual place in the New Covenant. The church began worshiping on the first day of the week to commemorate the resurrection of Christ (Acts 20:7).

Acts 20:7 NKJV
Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight.
vs. 1-3 gives a cosmic view of creation, but vs. 4 and following turn to what is happening on earth. This chapter rewinds to the 6th day and provides a a more personal view of God interacting with his creation.
“the history of” toledot formula in Gen
Moses wrote Genesis. How does he know the details of creation?

Not from any human source, for man was not in existence to witness it. Not from the light of reason, for though intellect can know the eternal power of the Godhead (Rom. 1:18–20) and that God made all things, it cannot know how. None but the Creator Himself could give this data and, therefore, it is through faith that one understands that the worlds were formed by the Word of God (Heb. 11:3).

Yahweh -first usage - vs. 4
Adam's body comes from God - 2:7
here is a description of what was stated in:
Genesis 1:27 NKJV
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Man’s value is not in the dirt that he was formed from, but in his creator and purpose.
Psalm 139:14 NKJV
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.
our bodies determine our identities since they come from God
Adam’s breath comes from God
man can’t even breath on his own.
Adam can only play the hand he is dealt.
Our world is an ordered world because it is a created world.
The fact that God made us means that he made us for a purpose. That purpose is not determined by us but by him.
Do you want your life to have significance?
Don’t worry about how many people know your name/ social media followers / etc
Commit yourself to fulfilling the purpose God made you for.
what is that purpose? part of the answer is found in what happens next. God places man in a garden.

2. God Made Us to Work - vs. 8-15

Eden

The Babylonians called the lush green land from which water flowed edenu; today, the term “oasis” describes such a place. This was a magnificent garden paradise, unlike any the world has seen since, where God fellowshiped with those He created in His image. The exact location of Eden is unknown; if “eastward” was used in relationship to where Moses was when he wrote, then it could have been in the area of Babylon, the Mesopotamian Valley.

the tree of life
Revelation 22:2 NKJV
In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
Revelation 22:14 NKJV
Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city.
Rivers
Locations are uncertain and reflect pre-flood conditions.
Adam’s job
Genesis 2:15 NKJV
Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.
Work is good and was part of man’s life in a perfect world. It will be in eternity as well -
Revelation 22:3 NKJV
And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him.
man was to cultivate and to guard the garden.
He rules and we are to rule under him in his service
1 Corinthians 10:31 NKJV
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
ordinary becomes extraordinary when we remember who we serve
Colossians 3:23–24 NKJV
And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
All creation is to serve his purposes
Our mission in life is defined not discovered
where has God put you? What has he given you to do? Where do you want to do good for his glory? pursue those things
We must embrace our calling not express our own calling
this has huge implications for all of life - gender / orientation

3. God Made Us to Work Together - vs. 16-25

God Made us to Relate to Him & to one another
The tree was a test. Would man trust God or his own way? Is He in charge of our world and our lives or are we?
All relationships have rules
We were made for relationship with Him and one another
God Made us with Unique Roles - vs. 21-25
It should come as no surprise that following God’s design will be contrary to culture.
Deuteronomy 22:5 NKJV
“A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the Lord your God.
We either reject God’s design or celebrate God’s wisdom.
Our culture has rejected God’s design because they have rejected God.
This is what all people do by nature (as we’ll see more clearly when we look at Genesis 3 next week). All sinners push back against God’s design. We do not want to have things dictated to us. We want to be left alone to do our own things.
But, praise God, He has not left us alone!

Conclusion

Application Questions
Are Christians obligated to observe the Sabbath? (Col. 2:13-17, Rom. 14:5-9)
How is the giving of life to Adam in some ways paralleled in the giving of new life in salvation? (2:7; Eph. 2:1-2, 4-5; 2 Cor. 5:17, Rom. 8:9-11)
Why did God put the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden? Does God put different things in our lives for similar purposes?
Should we seek fulfillment through our work? Can a stay at home mom be as fulfilled in her work as a life-saving surgeon?
Where do you see evidence in Gen. 2 that God designed there to be equality in personhood yet distinction in roles in marriage? Should we grumble or rejoice in this? Why?
What argument can you make from this chapter that mankind is not permitted or authorized to change the fact that marriage is to be between a man and a woman only? (See also Jesus’ statements in Matt. 19:3-6)
