Eschatology: Terms and Vocabulary

The Names of God

IMMANUEL - (Meaning) - God With Us “I AM” (Application) - Jesus is God in our midst. In Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.
This name indicates that Jesus is more than man. He is also God. Isaiah said that the child born to the virgin will be called Emmanuel (Isaiah 7:14; 9:6) He is the radiance of God’s Glory and the exact representation of His nature (Hebrews 1:3)
JEHOVAH (YHWH) - (Meaning) - “I AM” The one who is the self-existent One - (Application) - God never changes. His promises never fail. When we are faithless, He is faithful. We need to obey Him.

Introduction

5th trumpet: the locusts from the bottomless pit
The pit of hell has opened,
Its influence is strongly felt in our day. Satan is hard at work to undermine the cause of Christ.
He wants to destroy as many lives, homes, and churches as he can
We are in a battle this morning with the forces of hell.
Ephesians 6:12 NKJV
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Satan wants to hinder the gospel light.
2 Corinthians 4:4 NIV
4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

My title this morning is

The Seven Trumpets of Revelation - Locusts

Revelation 9:3 NKJV
3 Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

I. Their Presence

Out of the smoke came what appear to be locusts, but these are not mere insects. A swarm of locusts can overwhelm and devour an entire area in a short time. They usually come in vast numbers, covering everything in their path.
These demons will behave as locusts, overwhelming and consuming all they encounter.
They will have the power to sting as scorpions
This is referring to the great pain and fear that they will inflict upon their victims.

II. Their Purpose

Revelation 9:4–5 NKJV
4 They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man.
There is a limit to what they can do.
They are restrained from harming the grass and vegetation. They are not out to destroy and consume the landscape, but mankind.
They are sent to bring judgment on those who have rejected the Lord.
They won’t have the power to kill men,
only inflict great torture and pain.
This invasion will last for five months. There will be five months of intense suffering with no death.
Even in this time of chaos, God is still sovereign and in complete control!

III. Their Precision

Revelation 9:6 NKJV
6 In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.
The demons will accomplish their purpose. Men will not die, but they will seek death.
The pain and suffering will be so severe that men will desire to die to escape their misery.
This will be impossible. Those who have rejected God and are left to face His judgment will have no escape.
Sadly, if they could die, it would only bring more suffering in hell.
For these death has been delayed as God’s wrath is poured out.
I praise the Lord that I’ll escape these horrors! The blood of Jesus has cleansed me and I am free of judgment for sin.

IV. Their Portrait

Revelation 9:7–11 NKJV
7 The shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were crowns of something like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men. 8 They had hair like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth. 9 And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots with many horses running into battle. 10 They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men five months. 11 And they had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon.
In these verses John paints a vivid picture of what these demons will resemble.
1) Horses prepared for battle—They appear as strong horses, ready to pursue the enemy.
2) Crowns upon their heads—They are seen wearing a victor’s crown, completely conquering men.
3) Faces like men—They are seen as intelligent beings. They are real personalities with real objectives, not an imagination.
4) Hair like women—This seems to suggest their seductive nature. They will seduce the unsuspecting victim prior to pain. Satan and sin usually appeal to the flesh.
5) Teeth of lions—They will be powerful and dominating. Creatures that are relentless in their pursuit, stalking prey.
6) Breastplates of iron—They will be unstoppable. There will be no way to overcome or defeat their attack. These will be completely insensitive to the pain and torment they inflict.
7) Sound of their wings—This reveals the swiftness of their coming. Men’s hearts will fill with fear at the sound of their arrival, but there will be no escape.
8) Sting of their tails—It will be their main objective to inflict great pain and suffering.
9) Allegiance to their king—This demonic army will be under the command of Satan. His name listed in both Hebrew and Greek reveals that all unbelievers, Jew and Gentile alike, will face the ruthless attack of these demonic forces.
Most in our day would deny these as literal events yet to unfold. These are not only symbolic references. One day this 5th trumpet will sound and hell will be loosed on earth.

Closing:

J Vernon McGee loved mystery stories
about 1 o’clock in the morning he get to the place where the heroine has been tied down to the railroad tracks by the villain
goal number 77 is going to be coming along in about 20 minutes. She is in a desperate situation
I believe the hero will be able to get there to rescue her
but I find out that using an old warehouse down by the peer, tied to a chair under which a stick of dynamite with the fuse already lit.
Well I can leave the hero and heroine at 1 o’clock in the morning in that kind of a situation
He slips over to the final page in a different scene greets in their. The hero in the heroin sitting out in the yard. I see a lovely cottage and circled by white picket fence they’re married now and have a little boy who’s playing in the yard.
What a wonderful and comfortable scene that is
So I just turned back to the place where I stop reading, and I would say to the hero and the heroin, I don’t know how you are going to get out of this, but I tell you this; everything is going to work out all right.

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
As we bow our heads:
