SOMETIMES WE GET IT WRONG BUT GOD WILL MAKE IT RIGHT!

GOD CREATES THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH, POPULATES THEM WITH HIS IMAGERS TO DWELL AND RULE WITH THEM.
MAN REBELS. MAN BREAKS COVENANT. GOD DOES NOT GIVE UP!
HE PROMISES A SEED, A SAVIOR.
Genesis 3:15 ESV
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
THE STORY CONTINUES…IS IT ABEL? NO. IS IT CAIN? CERTAINLY NOT.
EVIL INCREASES. GOD BRINGS JUDGMENT. IS IT OVER FOR MAN? NEVER.
IS IT NOAH? NOPE.
EVIL BEGINS TO INCREASE. GOD DISPERSES. GOD GIVE THE NATIONS WHAT THEY WANT AND PLACES THEM UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF THE DIVINE COUNCIL.
THEN GOD CALLS A MAN. ABRAM. IS HE THE ONE? LISTEN IN:
Genesis 12:1–3 ESV
1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
HE IS NOT THE ONE BUT THE ONE WILL COME THROUGH HIM!
ABRAHAM’S LIFE: SOMETIMES HE GOT IT WRONG BUT GOD MADE IT RIGHT! GOD IS FAITHFUL!!!
Genesis 25:1–18 ESV
1 Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. 2 She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah. 5 Abraham gave all he had to Isaac. 6 But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the east country. 7 These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life, 175 years. 8 Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. 9 Isaac and Ishmael his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre, 10 the field that Abraham purchased from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried, with Sarah his wife. 11 After the death of Abraham, God blessed Isaac his son. And Isaac settled at Beer-lahai-roi. 12 These are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s servant, bore to Abraham. 13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, named in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael; and Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages and by their encampments, twelve princes according to their tribes. 17 (These are the years of the life of Ishmael: 137 years. He breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.) 18 They settled from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt in the direction of Assyria. He settled over against all his kinsmen.

VERSES 1-6 LISTS THE DESCENDANTS OF ABRAHAM AS A SIGN OF GOD’S SOVEREIGN FAITHFULNESS.

ABRAHAM FATHERS MANY SONS/NATION BUT ONLY ISAAC RECEIVES THE COVENANT INHERITANCE.
THE IMAGERY OF BEING SENT TO THE EAST IS REMINISCENT OF EDEN AND CAIN (GEN 3:23; 4:16)
Genesis 17:5–7 ESV
5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.

VERSES 7-11 TELL US OF ABRAHAM’S DEATH AND BURIAL AND GOD’S BLESSING OF ISAAC.

GOD WAS FAITHFUL TO ABRAM. WHEN GOD CALLED HIM HE WAS BARREN. WHEN HE DIED HIS SONS BURIED HIM WITH HIS WIFE IN LAND THAT GOD HAD ALLOWED HIM TO PURCHASE.
“BREATHED HIS LAST”
“GOOD OLD AGE”: REALLY 175? MAYBE. PROBABLY NOT. ANCIENT PEOPLE USED NUMBERS DIFFERENTLY. BIBLE IS WRITTEN FOR US NOT TO US.
“GATHERED TO HIS PEOPLE” CANNOT BE A REFERENCE TO BEING BURIED BECAUSE HE WASN’T BURIED IN A FAMILY PLOT. HE JOINED HIS ANCESTORS IN THE LAND OF THE DEAD.
BLESSED: THIS IS RARE CREATION LANGUAGE (GEN 1:22, 28; 2:3; 9:1).

VERSE 12-18 BEGINS A NEW tôlĕdōt SECTION.

GEN 11:27-25:11 IS THE tôlĕdōt OF TERAH. GEN 25:12-18 IS THE tôlĕdōt OF ISHMAEL.
IS IT STRANGE THAT ISHMAEL AND HIS LINEAGE IS INCLUDED?
ISHMAEL EXISTED BECAUSE ABRAHAM GOT IT WRONG.
HE IS NOT THE SON OF PROMISE BUT GOD DID PROMISE ABRAHAM CONCERNING HIM!
Genesis 17:18–21 ESV
18 And Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before you!” 19 God said, “No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him. 20 As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I have blessed him and will make him fruitful and multiply him greatly. He shall father twelve princes, and I will make him into a great nation. 21 But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this time next year.”
Genesis 16:11–12 ESV
11 And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because the Lord has listened to your affliction. 12 He shall be a wild donkey of a man, his hand against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.”

EVEN WHEN WE ARE FAITHLESS GOD IS FAITHFUL

SOMETIMES WE GET IT WRONG BUT GOD WILL MAKE IT RIGHT!
Romans 3:1–4 ESV
1 Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? 2 Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. 3 What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? 4 By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, “That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.”
THIS IS A QUOTE FROM ONE OF DAVIDS GREATEST PSALMS OF REPENTANCE WRITTEN AFTER HIS SIN WITH BATHSHEBA:
Psalm 51:1–13 ESV
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.
