Living in the UK
Changed vocabulary:
Trash - rubbish
Trash can - rubbish bin
Chocolate chip cookie - chocolate chip biscuit
Learned to dress in layers:
You knew, most of the time how to dress for the day
You dress for summer, then you layer for spring/autumn, and finally prepare for winter
And still, you find yourself unprepared
Why are we here?
God loves you
In my first year of seminary God imparted some of that love for you to my heart
I’m not the answer, but I’m willing to use my stuttering voice and shaky hands to point you and others to Jesus
It is worth every moment just to see Liam come to know Jesus as Saviour
Why do we follow Jesus and take what the Holy Spirit teaches us and demonstrate that love for Jesus outwardly?
1 John 4:15–19 KJV 1900
Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us.
The HS isn’t teaching us this because He hates us or doesn’t like us - rather He loves us and shows us how our lives outwardly can adapt to demonstrate that love for God

The knowledge of headship

Vs. 3
Christ is the head
Men follow the head
Women follow men
Equality - God loves men and women equally
Our bodies as illustration:
Men - body - what is to be presented forward in worship services
Christ - soul - guides, directs, and gives voice to the body
Women - spirit - spirit or atmosphere in the worship services
Aliquippa BT - Pastor’s wife was grumpy - she didn’t like Holly - after the evening service Holly told me the perceptions she received from the pastor’s wife - to avoid any further contact, we decided not to stay the night, but drive back to our house almost 6 hours away
Weeks past and I suddenly get a call from the pastor stating - my wife and I don’t like you, but someone in the church came forward and said they are supporting you personally - I tried to discourage the individual, but they insisted so we’re picking you up for support

The display of headship

Vs. 4-5
Men - praying or preaching ought not to have their head covered
to show honour, respect, to Christ
Women - praying or preaching ought to have their head covered
to show honour, respect, to Christ and the leadership role God has given men
That covering is hair - long hair is a picture of one’s head being covered

The practise of headship

Women’s head ought to be covered
1 Cor 11:6
1 Corinthians 11:6 KJV 1900
For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
Shorn - sheared or cropped - it’s a term used when cutting the wool off of sheep
A woman’s hair that is very short or shaven, in God’s eyes is disgraceful
It doesn’t please God
If an illness or disease causes this; the HS says for a woman to put on a covering (hat or physical covering of some kine)
Men head ought to be uncovered
1 Cor 11:7
1 Corinthians 11:7 KJV 1900
For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
A man’s head should not have a hat on while praying or preaching/teaching
Just as a woman’s hair should be long; a man’s hair brings glory to God when it is short.

The doctrine of headship

The responsibility of the image of God
1 Cor 11:7
1 Corinthians 11:7 KJV 1900
For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
Boys drawing a picture
Daddy - would you draw a circle?
Gen 1:26-27
Genesis 1:26–27 KJV 1900
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Both man and woman are made in the image of God
The responsibility of drawing the picture of God upon the hearts of his children God has given to man
Men failed... miserably
Jesus comes in:
2 Cor 4:4
2 Corinthians 4:4 KJV 1900
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
The image and likeness of God is finally restored in Jesus
John 14:9
John 14:9 KJV 1900
Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
Man was intended to display the wisdom, goodness, love, and power of God and was created to that end. He was also created to display God’s glory and to manifest His greatness and His majesty. He was indeed a noble being when he came fresh from the hands of his Creator. Much of the original image and glory has been tarnished as a result of sin but enough remains to set man apart from the rest of creation.
In the church, God designed men to demonstrate how we can be conformed to the image of God’s Son
Rom 8:29
Romans 8:29 KJV 1900
For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
The significance of glory
1 Cor 11:7-9
1 Corinthians 11:7–9 KJV 1900
For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
Man is to show the glory of God
Glory - brilliance or radiant beauty
Paul provides the context in Vs. 8-9 as he takes us to creation
Gen 2:18-24
Genesis 2:18–24 KJV 1900
And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Men praying uncovered - it draws attention to Christ, his Head, the God-given role in which God designed
Women praying covered - draws attention to her place in the home and church and respects God’s design for the man
This demonstrates an understanding of the places God has designed
The power of a restored life
Help meet
Help - fulfillment
Meet - opposite and toward or a likeness
Completes man yet is opposite in likeness
Sees things in a different perspective
Man - head - thinks things through
We understand that there are women who can outthink many men, but the basic design God made is for men to led with their head
Woman - heart - feels at the moment
We understand that their are men who are moved deeply by the heart, but, again, the basic design is that women are led with their heart
1 Cor 11:10
1 Corinthians 11:10 KJV 1900
For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
Paul empowered women’s role in the church
Synagogue - women played little to no part
Devout Jewish men would actually thank God they had not been created women.
10 men had to gather for a synagogue to built no matter how many women came
Paul gave women opportunity to serve in the church and to have a part
Last part of the phrase - because of the angels
1 Pe 1:12
1 Peter 1:12 KJV 1900
Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.
Entertain angels unawares - Hebrews
The Bible indicates that the angels watch what we do in worship
In Genesis 3 we find the fall of man, but let’s pay attention to how Satan tempted:
Eve - head - intellectual discussion as to whether it right or wrong to do something God said was wrong. 3 times she misquotes God’s Word. He raised doubt in her mind about God’s Word, followed it up with a denial, and ended with a delusion. He offered to set her free from the hampering restrictions imposed by God’s Word and bestowed upon her godlike status and power. She was deceived and overthrown.
Adam - heart - Satan indeed needed to do nothing but allow Adam’s heart to lead him. He loved Eve. He saw her in her fallen condition and his heart was overwhelmed. He was not deceived. He knew what he was doing.
Rom 5:12
Romans 5:12 KJV 1900
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Rom 5:19
Romans 5:19 KJV 1900
For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
The responsibility for sin did not, therefore, fall to Eve, but to Adam
A woman making sure her head is covered in prayer and when teaching God’s Word is a reestablishment to what God created
1 Cor 11:11-12
1 Corinthians 11:11–12 KJV 1900
Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.
Without man there would be no woman. Without woman there would be no more man.
Paul is referring to God’s design of family as God intended.

The adoption of headship

1 Corinthians 11:13–15 KJV 1900
Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
Knowing the doctrine of the respect one’s head shows to God’s design for the home and the church; can’t you see this?
Comely - fitting or pleasing to the eyes
Should a woman usurp her place in the church and pray uncovered?
Nature itself teaches us what is universal in understanding on every continent and every nation
Man should have short hair
Woman should have long hair
This brings a beauty to God and the woman
The opposite brings dishonour of a misplaced trust in God’s design for creation and the church
Rejected?
1 Corinthians 11:16 KJV 1900
But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
If man disputing or disagreeable - there is no place for this in the church
Paul knew that this teaching would be unpopular then, like it is now. The HS reminds us that this is not open for debate
God’s design and recognition of His design through our outward appearance is adopted by a heart that loves with the Lord.
It goes against what this new culture is trending towards, but God’s design has and will always stand the test of time. It brings a radiant beauty and honour to God.
