When It's Too Heavy

Matthew 11:28–30 KJV 1900
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Life is hard...
We’ve all heard the statement- “life is hard, and then you die”
Katherine Hepburn put it this way - “Life is hard, after all, it kills you”
The reality is, there are some hard things about life...
marriages that are not loving, caring - but hurtful and hateful
childrearing that is not all smooth sailing -
screaming babies in the night
endless diapers, dishes, laundry
house that gets cleaned only to look like a tornado went through it a few hours later...
Toddlers who are defiant
Children that “ALWAYS” need to be diciplined
Teens who are defiant
Pressures at work
Finances…
bills, bills and more bills
Cars that break down
Friendships that go sideways -
Misunderstandings, motives, misgivings
Heart ache -
loss of a loved one - spouse, child, grandchild
loss of a baby
loss of a parent
loss of a friend...
Health issues
cancer, diabetes, Leukemia, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis
back pain, sciatica nerve pain, dialysis,
Then we add:
Pandemic -
Economic uncertainty and financial pressures
Elections
Divided Nation -
divisive political leaders
divisive media
Course of our Constitution - what’s happening
Life is hard...
Sometimes, we find ourselves:
weighted down
overwhelmed
unsure
fearful to make decisions -
life is hard

When It's Too Heavy

Pray:
Tonight, I want to help us navigate through some of the weights of life...
1. The Companion
Matthew 11:28a KJV 1900
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
come unto me...
The Lord -
The Christ
The Savior
He is there for us...
The Companion
2. The Care
Matthew 11:28 KJV 1900
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
There will be a load to bear in life...
There will be a burden
There will be a load to lift and carry...
we find ourselves burdened down
we find ourselves w/o the strength to be able to lift the loads that surround us...
The Companion
The Care
The Call
Matthew 11:29 KJV 1900
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
We determine which load we carry...
There is already a burden that we bear…
we have already been laboring
we have already been toiling
we are already heavy laden
we are wore out...
the burden has left us empty...
how can I go on?
how can I take on more?
how can I even consider doing anything else for the Lord, His church, the ministry?
the middle part of mat 11.28 seems to be my life verse
Matthew 11:28 KJV 1900
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
The Companion
The Care
The Call
The Consideration
Matthew 11:30 KJV 1900
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
The Lord’s yoke is easy...
The Lord’s burden is light...
This doesn’t mean that life is easy...
This doesn’t mean that our burdens will all be easy...
Compared to the burden of Sin...
Compared to the load we carry without the Lord’s help...
The weight of sin
The weight of sin’s consequences
The weight of the absence of God’s help, presence, blessing...
Proverbs 13:15 KJV 1900
15 Good understanding giveth favour: But the way of transgressors is hard.
God’s ways are not hard
1 John 5:3 KJV 1900
3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
God’s ways are not grievous

The Care
The Call
The Consideration

Now - all of this was introduction… Several observations:

Don’t borrow trouble
life brings enough stress, weight, burdens… don’t go looking for them
Don’t Pick up burdens that are not yours to bear
there’s enough on our plate - stay in your own lane...
accident’s happen when you get into someone else’s lane
Don’t Burden someone else
asking someone to pray for you is different than when you place a burden on them...
Putting them into a place where they have to choose sides...
choose you or their friends
choose you or their church
choose you or their pastor
Don’t let someone burden you
There is a difference between “sharing and dumping”
If you are not in a place to make a difference - you are not the right person to listen to their issue...
a fellow employee can’t help the problem - only make it bigger
a fellow church member can’t fix the problem - Pastor / person in charge of that area
if they don’t “Feel Comfortable” speaking to the person who can help - why are they talking to you?
It’s not that they want help or change - they want to build their side… they have an agenda...
“let’s go talk to so and so...”
“let’s go talk to Bro. David”
“let’s go talk to Bro. Davis”
“let’s go talk to Mrs....”
“let’s go talk to pastor...”
THIS WILL STOP A LOT OF GOSSIP
THIS WILL STOP A LOT OF DIVISIVE BEHAVIOR
THIS WILL STOP SCHISMS...
CHURCH
SCHOOL
MINISTRY
LIFE
Don’t burden your children
Illustration: It’s too heavy
One day when Corrie Ten Boom and her father were riding a train home, (she was about 9 or 10 at the time). She asked her father about a line in a poem that she had read in school....
Within the line of the poem was a word unknown - a word sex… sexism...
“Father, she asked… what is sexism?” . Her father, looked at her, didn’t say a word, stood up, and pulled his tool and parts bag down off the rack above their seat… He set it down on the floor, and said, “Corrie, would you please carry this off of the train when we depart?”. She reached down and tried to pick up the valise, but it was too heavy… She looked at her fat her - “Father, this is too heavy for me to carry”.
He responded - “Correy, a poor father I would be if I expected you to carry something so heavy… it is that way with knowledge, some knowledge is too heavy for children to carry… When you are older and stronger, you will be able to bear it, but until then, you will have to trust me to carry it for you.”
Elections
Pandemic
Marital issues
Financial Pressures
Academic pressures
according to a study 8/2/19 -
Only 27% of college graduates work in the field of their degree
73% work in another field than what they graduated for...
41% of college grads work in a job where no degree is required...
Their elementary career is not life altering!!!!
C’s in Jr & Sr. High school is not going to destroy their lives...
I have NEVER had a job where they checked my hs gpa...
I was admitted into college -
I graduated
I didn’t have good grades in school growing up - it’s ok...
I am afraid that our children are being loaded down with things that are too heavy for them to carry...
Politcal unrest
Talk of gun rights / dying for our freedoms...
It’s too heavy...
Vaccines -
this is a parental decision - not of weight a child should carry...
Sins of the world
lgbtq
gender identity
hate
All these will be dealt with at some point- but don’t put a pressure on your children by conversing all of these issues in front of them...
All of the pressures that we bear - and just check your spirit - they have been too heavy for you...
Set them down and pick up the Lord’s yoke… get in the yoke with him… he can carry a lot more...
the burden will be a heavenly burden
the burden will be an eternal burden...
They are heavy for us...
they are too heavy for the children...
