Jesus
James 4:6
6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.” q 1

Because why did I get humbled?! I was trying to make a point starting with the sermon last week. God used my sermon from last week to build in me for this weeks preparation in serving up a little humble pie. I will have you know I didn’t eat it with Joy! Life is hard and and we go thru some hard things but God is faithful to bring us thru them if we will humble ourselves; put others before us. Lets look at some examples of humbleness in Gods word.
Mary anoints Jesus with her expensive perfume
John 12:3-8
3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, p but you will not always have me.” 1

Position or Condition?
Mary took a lowly position and washed his feet with her hair. She valued all Jesus ment to her and showed this in humble form by washing his feet with the perfume. Yet Judas showed great angst toward her because the perfume would have brought a lot of money. What was Judas valuing? Did he really spend 3 years with Jesus watching all of his ministry to only value money? God says in Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for i am gentile and humble in heart and you will find rest for your soul. Mary took it upon herself to spend her expensive perfume on Jesus because she knew he was worth it humbling herself letting down her hair and taking the posture of servant hood within the crowd of people.
Is there anything in your life you value more than Jesus, that if he came to you and ask you to give it to him it would be really hard to do?
New testament when Jesus Humbled himself
How about when he washes the disciples feet in John. This was a dirty job. Picture if you will roaming around the desert daily in nothing but sandals. The streets were filled with dirt and manure of the animals. Most peoples feet were the dirtiest thing on them exposed to all the elements. Yes Jesus took the humble position to wash their feet.
John 13:5 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 1
1 The New International Version. (2011). (Jn 13:4–5). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan.
Jesus took this position to set the example for what he did. He bowed down washed their feet and in verse 14 tells them to wash each others feet. and
Verse 16
John 13:16–17 (NIV)
16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
God will give them blessing for being humble.
Are we getting the picture?
Position or Condition?
What is Jesus doing here?
Jesus is putting his disciples before himself. He gave us this example of position and heart condition. Jesus heart was to love everyone. He put this love in action as he washed the dirty stinky smelly feet of his friends.
How do you and I do when it comes to humbling ourselves either before the Lord or before one another?
Read with me in
Isaiah 53:7–8 (NIV)
7 He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was punished.
Who goes to the cross?
Isaiah tells us God gave him the prophecy of Jesus Christ being the holy on who was led like a lamb to slaughter. Jesus fulfilled this prophecy and obediently went along with the temple guards willingly in the Garden of Gethsemane in verse 4
he ask “Who is it you want”
Read in John 18:4-8
4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”
5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.
“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 91

You can read in John Chapter 19 how Jesus crucifixion and death was described.
As Jesus was sent to Pilate to be sentenced to first a miserable torturous beating, and then crown of thorns placed on his head, he had to carry his own cross to his own hanging. He died a most miserable death between 2 convicted criminals but was guilty of nothing, yet was obedient to what his father ask him to do. The curtain was torn upon his death and because it was torn you and I have full access to the father thru Jesus Christ. A new way was given for all humanity to access God the Father by claiming Jesus Christ as our savior the son of God. He knew in the garden he was going to drink the cup his father was pouring out for him.
If you knew you had to carry out a task like this one to be humbled would you be obedient like Jesus did?
They took Jesus down from the Cross and buried him in a tomb, and had guards stand watch to make sure he did not escape. On the third day he rose, and he was seated with his father in heaven at his right hand. Hence the term right hand man!
Position or Condition? (so i want to return to my week of eating Humble Pie....and I ask you to silently consider with me your willingness to eat humble pie. How do we feel about humility? How do we respond when we are being nudged to humble ourselves? Do we want to “lower” ourselves into that position of humbleness? Why? or Why Not? Does it have something to do with the CONDITION of our heart whether or not we step into that POSITION of humbleness like Mary and Jesus did. Friends, your CONDITION will ultimately determine your POSITION. God wants our heart. He wants us in a CONDITION to accept and fall into that POSITION.
God speaks to Solomon during the dedication of the temple God says in 2 Chronicles after he has sacrificed 22 thousand head of cattle and 120,000 sheep and goats to God and more than a 2 week celebration God says:
2 Chronicles 7:14 (NIV)
14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
God tore the curtain in the old temple and it is no more. I ask will you humble yourselves and pray out of reverence for Jesus Christ who was the most humble man lead to die the most humiliating death on a Cross between 2 criminals? In the end he forgives all, and when we recognize what he has done for us a Christians and believe in the resurrecting power of Jesus Christ he forgives our sin and brings us into good standing with him and the father. This is ultimate Humility because God the father loves us all so much he wants us to spend eternity with him in heaven for ever. If you’re feeling a little humbled by this story and want to recommit your life to Jesus Christ please follow me in this prayer.
but before prayer What Position doe we TAKE?
Dear lord I know I am a sinner. I need you to come into my life and fill me up with you. I ask that you please forgive my sins against you. Lord I repent of my sin. Lord I know you came to redeem me of my sin, to heal me of my afflictions, and to save me from my self. Lord I give my life over to you for all the grace you have given me in this life. Lord Jesus I know you love me and want me to be with you so I recommit my life to you today and humbly come before you to do so. Thank you Jesus IN Jesus Name AMEN!!!
