What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and How can I get it?

intro
Today my plan is to continue the Back to the basics series aka God’s great reset.
as a reminder i’m not using the word “basic” a simple or easy. but rather foundational.
If we don’t get this right, everything we build on it will simply collapse.
If you use a PC you probably see a button right beside the power button
Its called a reset button. When things are not going right with your computer
the idea is to press that button, it powers down and restarts the computer.
it wipes away any program or driver operating in memory that may have malfunctioned
It’s like starting over from new.
Window 10 has implemented a master reset. to restore your computer back to the way it was when it came out of the factory.
as time goes on you can install drivers on your PC that don’t play nice with other.
you can get programs that don’t belong. A reset wipes the slate clean and let’s you start from fresh.
During my days of doing technical support, the first step to trouble shooting was always a physical reset. this fixed 90% of the problems. that’s why the button is there!
I believe this is the season we as the universal Church are in.
God is resetting His Church.
One indicator proving we need a reset is in the area of

Sharing your Faith

According to Barna
In 1993, 89% of Christians who had shared their faith agreed this is a responsibility of every Christian.
Today, just 64% say so—a 25-point drop.
In Canada
The survey from Nashville-based Lifeway Research found that more than half
58 % of churchgoers feel comfortable in effectively sharing their faith.
43% say they feel a “personal responsibility to share my religious beliefs about Jesus Christ with non-Christians.”
78 % have not shared that faith with anyone over the past 6 months.
59% say they haven’t invited anyone to church in that same time frame.
The basic command Jesus gave every believer of Jesus to do is to share our faith with others
Mark 16:15 NASB95
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.
Gospel=Good News
its natural to share good news
Matthew 28:19 NASB95
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

The Greatest commands Jesus gave us was

Matthew 22:37–38 NASB95
And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “This is the great and foremost commandment.
The second is
Matthew 22:39 NASB95
“The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
Sharing the good news with others is not just a good thing if you have the time for it!
Its God’s greatest desire for you.
That’s why our church’s slogan is
Love God, Love People…so they can Love God and Love People!
The modern church has become a cruise ship, when our real identify is a combination between a medical ship and a battleship.
When your greatest concern is whether or not you like the worship set or the sermon, but you don’t think twice about your neighbor going to spend eternity in hell We got a problem.

Where we’ve gone off the rails

I believe every follower of Jesus, knows they should share their faith.
but most feel ill-prepared
As Pastors/Evangelists we need to take responsibility for that.
Its been the method for many of us to lay on the guilt,
YOU NEED TO SHARE THE GOSPEL.
We’ve had people lay on the guilt, but that never works.
Our motivation cannot be guilt…it must be love.
As Pastor’s and evangelists we need to pick up the responsibility of training the saints for the work of service
Ephesians 4:11–12 NASB95
And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
Yes its our job to equip you for the work of service. Not to berate and guilt you into doing it!
Unfortunately many of us have gone after the wrong method to do this.
teaching you evangelistic strategies, techniques, providing you with the tools so you can share your faith.
don’t get me wrong, this things are not wrong......just out of place!
Matthew 28 we have recorded what God wants us to do.
in Acts 1:4 Jesus tells us how to do it!
Acts 1:4 NASB95
Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me;
Acts 1:5 NASB95
for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Acts 1:8 NASB95
but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
Jesus did not hide the fact that in order to carry out His commands, we would need the help of Holy Spirit
In fact if you try to be a follow of Jesus, without the help of Holy Spirit you will at best be luke warm and at worst fighting against God , but most fall into the realm of apathetic living!
You will definitely feel unfulfilled, lacking ......
How do we overcome that?
body

What is the Baptism of Holy Spirit?

Quite literally it means to be immersed in.
The Greek word "baptidzo" literally means to “dip” or to “immerse”.
We’ve talked about water baptism. being immersed under water
The same word is used to describe how Holy Spirit desire to interact with us
Holy Spirit desires to fill every part of us, leaving absolutely nothing untouched!
Its why we also use the word filled.
John the Baptist prepared the way
Matthew 3:11 NASB95
“As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Peter carried on the message
Acts 2:38 NASB95
Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Its interesting to reference
John 3:5 NASB95
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
Kingdom = the domain of the King
Where the will of the King is carried out in fullness.
It is impossible for us to be in the will of the Father without being filled with Holy Spirit!
Allow me to clarify some misunderstandings around the doctrine of Holy Spirit
The apostle Paul clearly taught that we receive the Holy Spirit the moment we receive Jesus Christ as our Savior.
1 Corinthians 12:13 NASB95
For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Romans 8:9 NASB95
However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.
Ephesians 1:13–14 NASB95
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
When you receive the forgiveness of Jesus through repentance, Holy Spirit comes and dwells within you.
In fact Holy Spirit brings your Spirit back to life.
Body Soul Spirit
before salvation your a soul with a body but your spirit is dead
after salvation Holy Spirit brings your Spirit to life. making you complete Body Soul & Spirit
We see this truth in Jesus’s interaction with Nicodemus
John 3:5–7 NASB95
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. “Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
Jesus told Nicodemus It was a physical rebirth but a spiritual
Born of water....baptism of repentance....water baptism
Born of Spirit...... Baptism of power......Holy Spirit Baptism
The receiving/indwelling of the Spirit occurs at the moment of salvation.
The filling of the Spirit is an ongoing process in the Christian life.
I’ve heard it described this way. can’t say it is completely accurate but it conveys and idea.
Indwelling of the Spirit is like drinking a glass of water.
Baptism of Holy Spirit is like jumping in the ocean.
Being baptized in the Holy Spirit is much more that speaking in tongues, or falling on the floor or explainable things taking place.
True those things happen.
But the primary purpose is to equip you with everything you need to carry our the will of the father in His Kingdom
So let’s take a look at some of the things being filled with the Holy Spirit get’s you!

Holy Spirit Empowers you to witness for Jesus

Acts 1:8 NASB95
but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

Holy Spirit Teaches us everything we need to know

John 14:26 NASB95
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

Holy Spirit testifies of our identity

Romans 8:16 NASB95
The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God,

Holy Spirit confirms God’s promises

Ephesians 1:13 NASB95
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,

Holy Spirit positions us as Children of God

Romans 8:14 NASB95
For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

Holy Spirit gives us Life

Romans 8:11 NASB95
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Holy Spirit proves we belong to God

Romans 8:9 NASB95
However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

Holy Spirit Guides us into Truth

John 16:13 NASB95
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

Holy Spirit Renews us

Titus 3:5 NASB95
He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

Holy Spirit develops spiritual Fruit in us

Galatians 5:22–23 NASB95
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Holy Spirit gives us gifts

1 Corinthians 12:4–11 NASB95
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

Holy Spirit Strengthen us

Romans 8:26 NASB95
In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;

Holy Spirit directs us

Acts 13:2 NASB95
While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

Holy Spirit enables us to speak in unlearned languages

Acts 2:4 NASB95
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.

Holy Spirit Helps us

Jesus talking
John 16:7 NASB95
“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

Holy Spirit gives us prophesy

2 Peter 1:21 NASB95
for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Holy Spirit allows us to encounter God’s Love

Romans 5:5 NASB95
and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Holy Spirit gives us boldness

Acts 4:31 NASB95
And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.

Holy Spirit convicts us of sin

John 16:8 NASB95
“And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;

Holy Spirit gives wisdom and understanding

Isaiah 11:2 NASB95
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

Holy Spirit enables us to understand the thoughts of God

1 Corinthians 2:11 NASB95
For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.

Holy Spirit Dwells within us

Ephesians 2:22 NASB95
in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.

Holy Spirit intercedes for us

Romans 8:27 NASB95
and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
I could go on and on with this, but I hope you get the idea.
The primary purpose of the baptism of the Holy Spirit is to equip you with everything you need to carry our the will of the father in your life
Without the Spirit you have no chance of seeing that done!
It is true The Holy Spirit does all these things, but we limit Him while we just take a drink at salvation.
There is a subsequent experience for every believer.
That should be an ongoing process in the lives of every believer.
Acts 19:1 NASB95
It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples.
Acts 19:2–4 NASB95
He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.” Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”
Acts 19:5–6 NASB95
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.
We should be continually filled with His presence.
We call that aspect the Baptism of Holy Spirit.

How do I receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

Luke 11:13 NASB95
“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
The simple answer to this question is to Ask heavenly father for the Holy Spirit.
Mark 11:24 NASB95
“Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.
In the same manner we need to ask Jesus to forgive us of our since,
We need to ask for the baptism of Holy Spirit.
