Matthew 27:57–28:6 NKJV
57 Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him. 59 When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed. 61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb. 62 On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, 63 saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting the guard. 1 Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. 3 His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4 And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men. 5 But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
Have you ever asked your self the question, “Why did Christ have to go to the tomb?”
I have people say:
To show he had power over death. But he already had power over death.
Widow of Nain (Luke 7:15)
Jairus’ Daughter (Mark 5:42)
Lazarus (John 11:44)
To show he was the son of God
But Jesus said his works declared he was the Son of God. (John 10:36-38)
John 10:36–38 NKJV
36 do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.”
Peter had even declared it (Matthew 16:6)
Matthew 16:16–17 NKJV
16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
Jesus Went to the Tomb to Prove His AUTHORITY (John 2:18)
John 2:16–21 NKJV
16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.” 18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?” 19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body.
Authority over the TEMPLE (John 2:18)
A. The resurrection was a PROMISE fulfilled (John 2:19)
B. The resurrection gives Jesus the authority to JUDGE the Temple (Rev. 1:12-13)
Revelation 1:12–13 NKJV
12 Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band.
Revelation 1:17–18 NKJV
17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. 18 I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.
Revelation 1:20 NKJV
20 The mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches.
C. The resurrection gives Jesus the authority to control the ACTIVITY within the Temple (John 2:16)
Acts 17:24 NKJV
24 God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.
Acts 17:31 NKJV
31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 NKJV
19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
Does Jesus have Control over the temple. I have found that often we say Jesus has control over the temple but we really mean we want Jesus to live in the temple or hang around the temple.
How many people live on their own. How many people who live on their own would be upset if you came home one day and your parents decided they wanted to paint your house a different color and did not ask you? They decided to get rid of your furniture and purchase something different and didn’t ask you? That is the difference between letting a person have control and just visiting.
He can have control until he tells us how to use our money.
He can have control until he tells us how to talk.
He can have control until he wants us to give up a life controlling habit. (My habit is not life controlling. Really? Does it affect your moods? Does it affect your relationships? Do you have to hide it? Does it have a financial impact on your life? Does it harm your health? Does it affect your productivity?
He can have control until he tells us we can’t paint the walls of the temple with graffiti (it sounded better than tatoos).
2. Authority over the power of SIN (1 Cor. 15:57)
1 Corinthians 15:54–57 NKJV
54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
A. Death has a STINGER (1 Cor. 15:55)
Every time you stand at a graveside and we feel the grief and sorrow of death we remember the penalty of death..
The real sting is that we have no way to remove the stinger.
B. Sin brings DEATH (1 Cor. 15:56, Rom. 6:23)
If we can destroy that which has the stinger we can avoid.
The only problem that which has the stinger is ourselves (not the law) Rom. 7:12 Everybody say I am the problem.

21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Romans 8:1–4 NKJV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:6 NKJV
6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
C. Sins STRENGTH is the Law (1 Cor. 15:56)
i. Where there is no law there is no transgression (Rom. 4:15)
ii. When know the law of God we recognize there is no way to be perfect before God. (James 2:10)
D. God the Father gives us VICTORY (1 Cor. 15:57)
i. Victory is a GIFT from God
ii. Victory was delivered by JESUS
3. Authority in HEAVEN & EARTH (Matt. 28:18)
Matthew 28:18 NKJV
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
1 Peter 3:21–22 NKJV
21 There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.
John 5:25–27 NKJV
25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.
John 10:18 NKJV
18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”
