Exodus 14
“And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness. 21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: 22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.” Exodus 13:20-22.
V.4 God is not through showing His power to Pharaoh and the Egyptians.
V.5-V.8 After 3 days the Israelites were not seen returning to Egypt so, Pharaoh went after them.
· Pharaoh convinces the people to go after the Israelites – they are lost and confused, trapped between two seas.
V.9 Pharaoh promises to lead the fight and to divide the spoil evenly. He works them into such an inspired frenzy that they over ran the Pharaoh and pursued the slaves.
V.10 Pharaoh catches up – Pharaoh drew nigh. He drew himself near in order to lead the fight.
· Egypt was seen as coming as one – with great unity.
· There was a spiritual force with them coming seemingly from heaven.
· Apparently, GOD left 1 god behind and Egypt thought this god was going to save them, they [the Israelites] saw the heavenly prince of Egypt advancing from heaven to aid the Egyptians.
· They were unity with hatred for the Israelites.
V.11-12 There is as of yet not faith in God nor in Moses.
· In spite of all they had seen God do they were still without faith
· A church that lacks faith in God and the Pastor will grow nowhere.
The Midrash tells us that, seeing the approaching Egyptian army, the Jewish people were divided into four camps.
· There were those who said, “Let us throw ourselves into the sea.”
· A second group said, “Let us return to Egypt.”
· A third faction argued, “Let us wage war upon the Egyptians.”
· Finally, a fourth camp advocated, “Let us pray to G‑d.”
V.13-14 Moses declares his faith in God to deliver them. Moses said, stand still
V.15 The command is given – go forward. There is only one way to go forward and that is in faith.
V.16 There had to be a visual display of faith. Had Moses not taken the rod and stretched it out, the waters would have never divided.
V.19 The Angel of God, (the pillars) – believed by the Jews to be Michael, though we believe it to be God Himself.
V.20 The omnipresence of God, being a cloud of darkness and a light at the same time. We see God being the shield.
V.21 The scriptures are clear on who is doing what.
Seven days into their journey.
