Exodus 13
Exodus 13:1-22
Lot of teaching and concerns over redeeming the firstborn child. If it’s a male childe he must be redeemed but not a girl, but wait, maybe if you are apart of a different sect of Jews. Momma’s firstborn but not daddy’s and so on. Twins.
The price of redemption is 5 silver coins to a Kohen. A member of the priesthood.
The Month Abib (Aviv) is Jewish (Hebrew) and corresponds to the Babylonian month Nisan – our March April. The Hebrew calendar is a Lunar calendar – based upon the cycle of the Moon, as opposed to solar. It equates to about 29.5 days per month or a 353/4/5 days year.
Whatever the origin of the name Abib/Nisan is the first month of the year for the Jews, and it is based upon the moon.
V.2 – Sanctify. What does that mean. To set apart to a sacred purpose or to religious use. To declare sacred. Man and beast.
V.3 Remember where – from the house of bondage, remember who – by the hand of God, remember what – not to eat leaven.
V.4 Remember what month.
V.5 We remember a promise given unto the fathers,
Milk from goats, honey from figs and such
V.6 Declaration of the Feast of Unleavened Bread
V.7 – Clearly a 7-day feast.
V.8 God must be honored, and the children must be taught. Don’t wait for them to ask, start while they are young.
V.14 God must be honored, and the children must be taught.
V.15 All the firstborn animals are sacrificed, while the firstborn child is redeemed. God, on the other hand, used His own firstborn Son as a living sacrifice to redeem the children of men.
Exodus 13:16 is where wearing a Phylactery on the forehead came from. Small leather box containing scrolls to remind one to keep the Law. (Also known as a Tefillin.)
V.16 The Tefillin. In the Torah, Frontlets is totapot / totafot, a non-Hebrew word used for Tefillin, aka phylactery. Tefillin is a post 2nd temple word, meaning after the 70 years of exile.
The men wear it during morning prayer. It is only worn by men UNLESS of course you are a reformed Jew.
When you see someone wearing one you will remember what God did.
BTY, reformed mean corrected. Seems to me a lot of people think that after hundreds if not thousands of years of doing something one particular way they need to come along and correct things. In case you are not aware there is a Reformed Baptist group as well.
V.19 Joseph’s dying request, in effect his last words were to encourage and assure the children of Israel that GOD would come and rescue them – don’t lose faith!
When Jesus left us… “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” John 14:1-3
Therefore, “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quiet you like men, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13.
For “the just shall live by faith.” Hebrews 10:38.
V.20-22 Jesus is the Light and He has made the way by which we should go. We’ll cover more of that next week.
