Romans 4:13-25
New International Version
13 It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. 14 For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, 15 because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.
16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. 17 As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.”[a] He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.
18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”[b] 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. 22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” 23 The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

- we think that we have it all figured out
- we feel like we can’t control every situation
- there is nothing that we can do to earn blessings from God
- in the end we must rely on God for everything that we have.”when we activate our faith” we get the attention of God.

Hebrews 11:6

King James Version6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

- at the end of the day we must love, trust, and have faith in him
Intro - Thesis
(connect back to scripture storyline)
Recap the scripture story – retell and give the overview
As Paul speaks to the church at Rome there is a struggle. The church is just coming back together as the Jewish members of the church exiled from the city and they are not just returning. Since they have been away the non-jewish Christians have been following the teach of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to have faith in Him. The Jewish members disagree and they say the you must follow the law (all the other stuff, afro sheen, pick oil, hair spray, all this other stuff). Pauls says that we are no long under that law and he takes that you just need one thing and that is the thing that activates and gets the attention of God and that is FAITH!!!! When faith blessing are active, healing is activated, forgiveness is activated.
Proposition
- What is the claim? (relevance for today)
The scripture wants us to do (what?) We cannot work our way into heaven by just doing good deeds. Especially if they are absent the love of God and the love of God’s people
The scripture wants us to do this by (how?) Paul encourages us to live a life that has a foundation of having a heart for God and a heart to trust Him.
The scripture wants us to take action towards who/what/whereby (to who?) We shall put our focus, love, hearts and faith towards God in everything that we do.
- What is the focus? (pull from your exegesis form)
This passage centers around trust faith and love of God.

Set up a good transition to your next point. Put something here that you will read!

Point 1 – Faith for our inheritance

13 It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. 14 For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, 15 because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.

***try to develop two subpoints for each point…
Point 1 – The promise beause of the faith- Title…. Talking Point 1
- God has an inheritance for each of us
- He tells us in his promises
· - “For I know the plans, I have for you” his help and guidance,
· his faithfulness, our salvation, his provision, eternal life,
· - Abraham was first called by God after God saw that he showed Faith
- are we depending on what God says or are we depending on ourselves?
- God makes promises to those who don’t have the ability to receive it by themselves. (I will pour out a blessing)
all people can benefit from God’s promises.
- including those inside and outside of the church.
Talking Point 2
Point 1 – The faith rests on Grace- Title…. - God provides us the gift of grace but the hand of Man is too small to receive it God’s gift it’s too big.
- how do we bridge the gap between human possibility and the divine promise?
- trusting in God is the activation of God’s promise that is given with his Grace
(swim illustration next page)

Illustration-

I took swimming lessons all of my life I could swim back-and-forth and up-and-down the pool. I could jump in at the deep in and swim around and go back-and-forth. I got the Boot Camp and I could barely stay afloat. Oh that I have learned that going away. The swimming instructor informed me that swimming is not quite like riding a bike. He stated that is something you must continue to work out all of your life. To fully receive God’s promises faith must be a lifetime commitment you can’t just do it while you’re young you must be in it for the long-haul.
Have faith to receive God’s promise to receive your inheritance.

Point 2 – Faith in a dead situation- Title…. Talking Point 1
- we have to live into what God is calling us to do.
- we have to live into our mission statement.
- are we depending on what God says or I’ll be depending on what we can see
- it is about God’s vision not our vision.
- don’t focus on what you have focus on your potential and Jesus Christ.
- we like to say what the church can’t do
- God is still calling us as his people
- start making a list of the things that God says you can do. (we can have faith that goes against all odds)
(things that don’t make sense)
Talking Point 2
- Abraham was placed in an impossible situation with broken equipment.
- are you laughing at God’s promises for you.
- Abraham stays focus on God’s promise this allows him to be faithful.
- God brings life out of a dead situation.
- gods promises were here before man God’s promises were here before church God’s promises were here before family
- God does this not because he wants to impress people. He does this because he desires to keep his promises.
- out of death he brings life out of suffering he brings life to the brokenness he brings life.
- God looks into nothingness and brings things into existence
- BUT our faith but be effective
(go to sis stringer and opening the can)

Illustration-

Other day I was asked by sis stringer to open a jar. I began to strain and pull. Everytime I grabbed I could not get a grip. I remember that my dad said that you can remove any lid because you have the strength in your arms. It’s a matter of getting the power to the grip in your hand. He sometime there’s dirt on your hand that won’t let you get a grip, grease on your hands, I took my shirt and I WIPED off my hands and I was able to get a grip and take off the.
Some of us need to get a grip on our lives and follow God.
(Clean our lives up, clean up our hearts, clean up our families)
There are somethings in our life that get in the way of our faith cause to to loose our grip. You’ve got wipe them away and run on in the name of Jesus..

Point 3 – Faith that brings righteousness

22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” 23 The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

- Moses was declared righteousness.
-all of us are trapped in sin
- we can’t see her ourselves.
- the law only brings your sin into focus

- but what promises how we made as the church to the world around us
Talking Point 2
- I promise is how we made to those that don’t believe
- what promises have we made those that don’t look like us
- how do we embody the promises of God and our actions and our speech
- when the world sees our faithfulness they are inspired to seek the God that we serve.
- they will want to know about this man call Jesus Christ
Point 3 – We had faith in a dead situation- Title…. Talking Point 1
- in Christ there was in a death situation
- people say well what can Christ do for me they talked about Him.
- look a him getting beaten
- what promises can he make for me
- a man that they talked about and spit (how can he make me a promise)
- the pierced him in his side
- what promises can he make me
- they hung him between two thieves. You know He is probably a criminal.
- how can you make promise if they
- how can a man endure all that beating
- how can a man that was peirce in his side
- You know he never spoke up for himself so he is probably guilty.
- So what promises can he make.
- Christ does not need to make any more promises because HE IS the promise fulfilled!! (Did we already forget about Christmas??)

Illustration for point 3-

Is 9:6
For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
