Focus on the Family Bulletin, December, 1988 .
When I was in the Army, I remember when I walked into the barracks at boot camp. I came in by myself, not another single person from WV and only two people that were the same ethnicity as me. I felt out of place, self conscious and like I had made a huge mistake.
In bootcamp, I ended up with guys I barely knew becoming family. They were brothers. If I saw them today we would still feel that way. We had been through a very traumatic time together. We had been tested together, we had survived together. We had truly become family.
I felt that same way when I walked into this church for the first time back in 2001. I didn’t come back for 3 years. However, when I did, I began to experience that same type of family relationship that bootcamp produced. For those of us who have been here for any amount of time, we have faced some very traumatic times together, we have been tested together, we have survived together and we have become family.
Isn’t it amazing that Jesus says something very similar about us!
Hebrews 2:11–18 ESV
For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
Jesus and his disciples had been through something traumatic together, They had been tested together, they had survived together, they had become family.

Now we share in that Family

We see some OT passages to support this point. Probably because the writer was writing to Jews. Of course, the NT wasn’t complete so he may not have known about passages such as,
Mark 3:31–35 ESV
And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.” And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”

For Whoever Does The Will Of God

Ephesians 2:19 ESV
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,
Romans 8:28–31 ESV
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

One Source

Three Musketeers, All for One and One for all

Jesus has his source in the Father, We have our source in the Son, we have our helper in The Spirit. Our one source together is the Triune God.

Philippians 2:2 ESV
complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
Matthew 18:20 ESV
For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
There is more than two or three of us here, so guess who else is here.
John 15:4–5 ESV
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Abide in Him

What does this all mean to us today?

It means we have a Savior who has called us brothers and sisters. It also means I now have thousands of brothers and sisters. My family is huge, your family is huge.

I have people who I can depend on.

I have people that depend on me.

Proverbs 17:17 ESV
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
We are to be there for each other during the tough times and during the good times.
I need an encouraging word from you and you need an encouraging word from me.

You are my family

I care deeply for each of you. As such, we can hurt each other easily but we can also lift one another equally easily.
Rudyard Kipling once wrote about families, "all of us are we--and everyone else is they." A family shares things like dreams, hopes, possessions, memories, smiles, frowns, and gladness...A family is a clan held together with the glue of love and the cement of mutual respect. A family is shelter from the storm, a friendly port when the waves of life become too wild. No person is ever alone who is a member of a family.
Fingertip Facts.
Hebrews 10:24–25 ESV
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Proverbs 12:25 ESV
Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.
Hebrews Exposition

They are poor, they are despised, they are persecuted; what is worse, they are imperfect and faulty, often sorrowful, cast down, condemning themselves, groaning at the mercy-seat; yet “he is not ashamed to call them brothers.” There is such a unity between the believer, be he in what sorrow he may, and the Christ, be he in what glory he may, that he is never ashamed to own the close relationship between them.

“He is not ashamed to call them brothers” vs 11b

Hebrews 2:11–12 ESV
For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”
I am not ashamed to tell a single person that you all are my brothers and sisters.
I am not ashamed to tell anyone that Jesus is my Savior.

He is not ashamed of me, I will not be ashamed of Him!

Romans 1:16 ESV
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Brothers and sisters, family, let us not drift from our Lord, let us pay attention, let us allow our suffering to produce character and let us love like family.

Are you apart of this family today?
