Introduction

The mystery of Maura Murray

pic
Maura Murray was 21 when she lost control of her car and crashed into a snowbank in February, 2004. Another driver stopped and asked if she needed help, but she said no, she'd called the AAA. They drove off, deciding to call the police anyway.
Ten minutes later, when the police arrived, the car was locked and Murray was gone. There were no footprints in the snow, sniffer dogs couldn't get a scent on her, and a heat-seeking helicopter spotted nothing.
Strange details began to emerge. Murray, a straight-A nursing student, had withdrawn $280 from her account and emailed her teacher saying she'd have to miss class because there'd been a death in the family (there hadn't). Her cards and phone, a route map to Vermont, and a wine box were found in the back of the car, with red wine splashed on the outside. Back in Murray's dorm room, her belongings were found packed up in boxes.
But despite the leads, detectives made little progress, and there have been no credible sightings of Maura Murray since the night she disappeared.

Why (is the topic important)?

Stories without an end or with other crucial details missing can be agonising, yet we do this willingly with Jesus’ story.
In our rush to get to the cross, we do not appreciate Jesus' resolve to save humankind by doing what needed to be done. Let us appreciate all of Jesus' life matters to the Plan of Salvation.

So What (is so interesting about what’s going on in the text)?

about God or Jesus?

Because his Purpose was thwarted, God set in motion a Plan which culminated in sending Jesus to break the curse of sin and death (Heb 2:14; 1Jn 3:8).
Jesus determined to continue traveling to Jerusalem following the resurrection of Lazarus
Jesus left his favourite place on Earth for his passion (which historically refers to Christ’s suffering and death)
Arguably, Jesus antogonised the context to ensure his crucifixion, since he adopted the posture of a conquering king

about the characters or people generally?

sadly, Christians almost treat Jesus as if only his suffering and death are the only points of interest in him
Jesus’ entry became triumphal because the symbolism of his posture was not lost on the disciples nor the crowd
For the crowd, the Messiah-as-conquering-king was the only messiah that mattered
This event is called The Triumphal Entry because Jesus entered triumphantly and the crowd thought, “Surely he who raised the dead can free the oppressed?” (cf. Lk 4:16–21)

Now What (are we to do about it)?

about a command to obey or an example to follow?

we need a better understanding of the events of Jesus’ passion week
Jesus Arrives At Bethany Near Jerusalem – Friday Afternoon
Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey – Sunday
Jesus curses a fig tree – Monday
Jesus teaches a lesson from the withered fig tree – Tuesday
Jesus talks about His return and the end – Tuesday afternoon
Jesus predicts His crucifixion in two days hence – on the Mount Of Olive, returning to Bethany on Tuesday evening
A feast in the house of Simon the Leper in which Mary anoints Jesus for his burial – Tuesday evening in Bethany
Stung by the rebuke of Jesus at the feast, Judas bargains with the rulers to betray Him – Tuesday Night In Jerusalem
The disciples prepare for the Passover – Jerusalem, Thursday Afternoon
Jesus eats a last supper with His disciples – Jerusalem, Thursday Evening After Sunset
The arrest, trial, crucifixion, and burial of Jesus – Thursday Night, Friday, and Saturday of Passion Week
we need a better understanding of the whole of his story because all seven aspects matter —his birth, life, teaching, miracles, sufferings, resurrection and ascension— throughout we get a sense of Jesus’ resolve to save humankind.
Every [friend of Jesus] should [appreciate Jesus’ resolve to save humankind] because of [all seven aspects of His story matters].
