Introduction

Greetings…
Over the last few weeks, we have been studying through the theme “Names of Jesus” with the hope of drawing closer to our Savior by way of learning the differing names by which he is called.
Up to this point we have examined…
“Only Begotten Son” which demonstrates Jesus as the radically distinctive and without equal “son of God” i.e., he alone who is both deity and human.
The actual name “Jesus” which translates out in the Hebrew to “God who helps/rescues, delivers, saves.”
Today we are going to be looking at Jesus’ name of “Lord” which is found in the New Testament some “404” times when specifically talking about Jesus.
Jesus is first mentioned as “Lord,” in the New Testament, in Matthew 7:21.
The word “Lord” in the Greek is “kyrios” (kir-e-ose) and means owner, lord, master.
We find it used several times, when not talking about Jesus, wherein it is translated as “master, owner, and even sir.”
Colossians 3:22 ESV
22 Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.
Acts 16:19 ESV
19 But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers.
Matthew 21:30 ESV
30 And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go.
From this we can clearly see that this word “Lord” holds the idea of one who has authority over another which makes since when we see Sarah praised for calling Abraham, Lord.
1 Peter 3:5–6 ESV
5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.
All of this points us to the fact that Jesus, though our Savior, is also our Lord.
That means he has complete authority over us and that should make us continually ask ourselves some questions.
So today let’s ask ourselves a few questions concerning Jesus’ Lordship in our lives.

Who Has All Authority Over Your Life?

Are We Accepting Jesus’ Authority Over Our Life?

We live in a world that suggest man “is a god unto himself.”
That we have ultimate control or authority over our own lives.
To be clear this couldn’t be further from the truth concerning either us being a “god” nor us having “authority over our own lives.”
Matthew 28:18 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
So, the question again is “are we accepting our Lord’s authority over our life?”
Remember what Paul said concerning how we live our lives.
Colossians 3:17 ESV
17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Summary

If we need Lord Jesus’ authority for whatever we do in word or deed we better make certain we are seeking and accepting his authority over our life.
Is Jesus’ authority a priority to you?
Does it consume your every though and action to be right with Christ?
If that isn’t the case and you are not striving for that to be the case, then he simply isn’t your Lord.
The next question we must ask is…

Who Has All Power Over Your Life?

Does Jesus Move You To Righteousness?

Everyone sins, including those that have obeyed the gospel, are children of God, and Christians or Christ-like in their lives.
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
1 John 1:10 ESV
10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
The question we must constantly be asking ourselves is…”Does Jesus have the power over our lives enough to motivate us to come back to him when we fail?”
2 Corinthians 7:10–11 ESV
10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. 11 For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter.

Summary

As the song states, “there is power in the blood,” and we need Jesus’ powerful blood to keep our sins washed away (1 John 1:7-9).
If Jesus doesn’t have power over our lives, then he is not “Lord” of our lives and there is not washing away of sin.
No, we will continue to crucify our Lord over and over without his authority and power in our lives (Hebrews 6:6).
The last question I want us to focus on today is…

Who Has All Control Over Your Life?

Does Jesus Direct Your Steps?

You will hear that phrase all the time “Jesus directing our steps” in the religious world but what does it really mean?
It biblically means Jesus is in control of our lives through his word (John 12:48).
In other words, when we obeyed the gospel, become a child of God, become clothed in Christ, and were made a new creation that it was no longer about us but Christ.
Galatians 2:20 ESV
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
No longer living for self but Christ means putting away the fleshing things for the spiritual things.
Romans 7:21–23 ESV
21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.
Romans 7:24–25 ESV
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
Romans 8:1–2 ESV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

Summary

Brothers and sisters “does Jesus direct your steps” or the “world?”
Are you living as “you” or “hidden in Christ?”

Conclusion

As Christian’s, disciples of Christ, we must continually be asking these questions.
Who has all authority over our lives?
Who has all power over our lives?
Who has all control over our lives?
If the answer is not Jesus our “Lord” to everyone of those questions, today now is the time to make that change.
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Matthew 10:32 NKJV
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 ESV
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
