1 Now the first day of the week early in the morning,
1 Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning,
1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning,
1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn,
1 but the next day, while it was still very early,
they came into the sepulchre, and brought the odors, which they had prepared and certain women with them.
they, and certain other women with them came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.
They came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.
they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.
They took the spices they had prepared, went to the tomb,
2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre,
2 But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
2 and found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
3 And went in, but found not the body of the Lord Jesus.
3 Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
3 They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
3 but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
3 On entering, they discovered that the body of the Lord Yeshua was gone!
4 And it came to pass, that as they were amazed thereat, behold, two men suddenly stood by them in shining vestures.
4 And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.
4 While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes.
4 While they were perplexed about this, behold two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.
4 They were standing there, not knowing what to think about it, when suddenly two men in dazzling bright clothing stood next to them.
5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said to them,
5 Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them,
5a So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground.
5 And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them,
5 Terror-stricken, they bowed down with their faces to the ground. The two men said to them,
Why seek ye him that liveth, among the dead?
“Why do you seek the living among the dead?
5b Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men.
“Why do you seek the living among the dead?
“Why are you looking for the living among the dead?
6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you, when he was yet in Galilee,
6 He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,
6 He is not here, but he is risen! Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee,
6 He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,
6 He is not here; he has been raised. Remember how he told you while he was still in the Galil,
7 Saying, that the son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
7 saying, “The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
7 saying It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day?”
7 that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”
7 “The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be executed on a stake as a criminal, but on the third day be raised again?”
8 And they remembered his words,
8 And they remembered His words.
8 And they remembered his words.
8 And they remembered his words,
8 Then they remembered his words;
9 And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the remnant.
9 Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
9 Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest.
9 and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
9 and, returning from the tomb, they told everything to the Eleven and to all the rest.
10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women with them, which told these things unto the Apostles.
10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles.
10 Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things.
10 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles,
10 The women who told the emissaries these things were Miryam of Magdala, Yochanah, Miryam the mother of Ya’akov, and the others in their circle.
11 But their words seemed unto them, as a fained thing, neither believed they them.
11 And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them.
11 But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women.
11 but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.
11 But the emissaries didn’t believe them; in fact, they thought that what they said was utter nonsense!
12 Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre,
12 But Peter arose and ran to the tomb and
12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb.
12 But Peter rose and ran to the tomb;
12 However, Kefa got up and ran to the tomb.
and looked in, and saw the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.
stooping down, he saw the linen clothes lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.
When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went away, amazed at what had happened.

Stooping down, he saw only the burial cloths and went home wondering what had happened.

GENERAL
The Gospels agree that
· Jesus was raised bodily from the dead on Sunday, the first day of the week.
· Mary Magdalene was the first witness of the empty tomb and most probably of the resurrected Lord. This is important since the testimony of a woman was of no legal value in ancient Jewish society. Had some early church writers invented a story of the resurrection, they would NOT have emphasized Mary’s witness in the narrative.
Like the crucifixion accounts, the resurrection accounts diverge in a number of particulars.
· Only Matthew reports an earthquake and the rolling away of the stone from the tomb (Matt 28:2).
· Since Matthew also reported an earthquake at the crucifixion (27:51,), the second earthquake may show the equal significance of the resurrection.
· Matthew and Mark speak of one angel at the tomb (Matt 28:5); Mark 16:5), whereas Luke and John speak of two (Luke 24:4, John 20:12).
· Matthew and Mark report only the women visiting the empty tomb, while Luke and John tell of a visit by Peter (Luke 24:12), with John relating a footrace between Peter and the beloved disciple to the tomb (John 20:3-08).
NOTE: Burial within city limits was objectionable for reasons of health if nothing else (John 19:41,42). The oldest Roman law prohibited burial within the traditional limits of the city of Rome.
Christianity is in its very essence a resurrection religion.

They came to the tomb to embalm his body not to take it out of the linen in which Joseph had wrapped it, but to anoint the head and face and perhaps the wounded hands and feet and to scatter sweet spices upon and about the body.
Jn 20:1 says it was so early in the morning that it was still dark when the women arrived at the tomb.
They were not expecting to find Jesus risen from the dead. They were expecting Jesus to be in the tomb so they could finish anointing His body for burial (Mark 16:1).
Jesus had already been prepared by the woman breaking the vessel of perfume and anointing his body.

On their way to the tomb, the women thought about the difficultly the sealed stone would present. Who would move it for them? However, when they arrived, the found the stone rolled away. Matthew says it was moved by “a violent earthquake (Mt 28:2-4) and the Roman guards fainted with fear. They apparently ran away as they were not there when the women arrived.
The stone was not rolled away for Jesus to get out, it was rolled away so that people could look in and see that the tomb was empty. The Christian gospel rests squarely on this truth!

Dake-Lord Jesus-First occurrence of this title. It is found 34 times in the N.T. The last occurrence is in Rev. 22:20…..even so, come, Lord Jesus.

4 They were standing there, not knowing what to think about it, when suddenly two men in dazzling bright clothing stood next to them.
Not only “white, but “bright”. They first saw one angel outside the tomb who presently went in, and sat with another angel in the tomb, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.
Dake-Matthew and Mark both mention only one angel, but one could have been in the tomb and one ion the stone door…..so Luke’s account is more complete.
The two men/Angels suddenly appeared and terrified them and announced the resurrection of Jesus to the women and reminded them that he had predicted this would happen. As soon as they were reminded of what Jesus said, they remembered and now were better prepared to understand and believe the radical things Jesus said.
5a So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground.
Their fear was turned into reverence!

“necessary”, “must”…
The angels gently rebuked the women, implying that they should have known they would not find the body at the tomb. The spices were not needed!
Possibly felt ashamed of the preparations they had made to embalm on the third day him who had often said that he would on the third day arise again.

All the rest includes the two disciples of Luke 24:13-25 and the 120 of Acts 1:15.
The disciples may have had a common meeting place, perhaps in the upper room where the last supper was held and where they tarried for the Holy Spirit. Or, they may have been scattered every one to his own or two or three of them together in the same lodgings….but they all rec’d word of the resurrection. (Dake)
..all the rest…: There was a large group of Jesus’ followers in Jerusalem. Many were Galileans who traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover, including those who accompanied His triumphal entry (19:37)

There were at least five women that went to the tomb.
Mary Magdalene (one of six “Mary’s” healed by Jesus)
· healed by Jesus
· lingered at the Crucifixion
· First at the tomb
· First to see Jesus after the resurrection
Other Marys: Wife of Chuza, the steward of Herod and a disciple of Jesus
Wife of Cleopas and sister of Mary the mother of Jesus

In Jesus’s day, women were not considered to be credible witnesses….this is why The Eleven did not believe the women’s report about what happened at Jesus’s tomb and viewed it as nonsense.
They reacted with “disbelief” that a resurrection was possible!
“nonsense”, “silliness”, Gr “leros”-only occurs here and is a medical term for delirium.

Peter had learned to believe in what Jesus said, so Peter and John raced to the tomb to confirm the women’s story. John 20: 2-4 states that Peter and “the other disciple, the one Jesus loved” (John) both went to the tomb to confirm the women’s story.
“amazed” = greatly surprised; astounded; suddenly filled with wonder.
Amazed Including “unbelief” and being “skeptical”, Luke 11:38; Acts 13:41 but positive in Luke 1:21.
Peter’s marveling is ambiguous, indicating astonishment or confusion, but not necessarily faith.
Peter was curious enough to run to the tomb and look for himself. When he saw only the linen clothes in which Jesus had been wrapped, he was amazed but still skeptical.
Spurgeon: The Master left his grave clothes behind him. He did not rise from the tomb wrapped about with a winding-sheet. He did not wear the burial clothes of the tomb as the garments of life, but when Peter went into the tomb, he saw the grave clothes lying carefully folded.
Note the six things Peter did:
Arose, Ran, Stooped, Saw, Departed, Marveled……does not say he “Believed” initially! (Dake)
Peter’s wondering was not a lack of faith, but struggling in an attempt to understand what could have happened.
INTERESTING OBSERVATIONS
*Christ first appeared to Mary Magdalene – not to an apostle, society’s upper crust, or the religious leaders, but to a woman with a demonic past (8:2). Mary had known great sorrow and oppression-she represented the “poor in spirit” for whom Christ came.
Mary Magdalene lingered at the Cross and was the first to the tomb!!!!
John 20:11-18 we see that Mary Magdalene returned to the tomb and was standing outside weeping when Christ suddenly appeared to her. This was his first appearance.
One church father referred to her as “the apostle to the apostles,”. An apostle is a “sent one”. God sent Mary to the apostles to tell them about the Resurrection.
Luke 24:3-First occurrence of this title. It is found 34 times in the N.T.. It’s last occurrence is in Rev 22:20, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus”.

Christianity is in its very essence a resurrection religion!
*The manner of the “re-uniting” of Christ’s soul and body in His resurrection is a mystery, one of the secret things that belongs not to us!
*The resurrection of Jesus Christ affirms to us that He is indeed the Son of God, just as He claimed to be.
It also proves that His sacrifice for sin has been accepted and that the work of salvation is completed.
His resurrection also declares to us that He is the Judge who will come one day and judge the world.
*We do not know exactly what time Jesus arose from the dead on the first day of the week, but it must have been early.
It is no surprise that satan has attacked the truth of the resurrection:
1. LIE-the disciples came and stole Christ’s body
2. LIE-Jesus did not rally die, but only swooned!
3. The corpse has never been found
4. He appeared to many
5. Centurion at the cross: “Surely, this man was the Son of God”.
CHARLES HADDEN SPURGEON
Christ was not a spirit when he rose from the dead; his body could be touched.
Did not Thomas put his hand into his side?
And did not Christ say, “Handle me, and see. A spirit hath not flesh and bones as you see me have.”
We shall rise in our flesh” though all flesh is not the same flesh”.
None of you weep because your dear mother and or father are before the throne; but you weep because their body is in the grave.
You weep because the body is cold, and dead, and clay-like; for the soul you do not weep. But I have comfort for you. That very body will rise again; that hand will be held out in affection once more. That poor old rickety body of yours will live again without its pains, without its agonies; that poor shaky frame will be repaid all it has suffered.
If your bodies are to dwell in heaven, I beseech you take care of them. I do not mean to take care of what you eat and drink, and wherewithal you shall be clothed; but I mean, take care that you do not let your bodies be polluted by sin.
QUESTIONS TO PONDER
If like Mary, and you have been miraculously healed and spent a lot of time with Jesus, listening to his words, watching him perform miracles but did not even consider that all he said would come to pass, would you pack up the spices and head for the grave? WWYD?
If like Peter, you spent years with Jesus, listening to his words, watching him perform miracles, healing the soldier’s ear after you cut it off, you denied him three times and the cock crowed as he said it would and yet you still had to run to the tomb to make sure he had risen like Mary said he did? WWYD?
