God caused us to be born again to a living hope, a salvation that is to be fully realized at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Since the Fall, God has reminded us that He would send His Servant, who would suffer, but then bring glory. The gospel which has been preached to us by those who suffered, is that Christ suffered ultimately for the world, and so we, too, can be set apart through suffering for the glory of God. We must be prepared to do so.

1 Peter 1:10-16

1 Peter 1:10–16 NASB95
As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look. Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Preparation - Public Speaking/Speech Class
Tim Wood’s persuasive speech
Brandon’s battle for a pure mind that is about to happen.
When we understand that a challenge is coming, we should prepare for that challenge. When things go well, we can tend to be complacent and not preparing for action, but trusting that we can just react to what happens.
This is what our salvation is about right now. Knowing truth.

As to this Salvation

1 Peter 1:10–12 NASB95
As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. Teaching Points

This SALVATION is AMAZING
Based on GOD’s WORD
the OT prophets spoke of it, and hoped for it. But it was not fully realized in their lifetimes
the angels in HEAVEN can’t take their eyes off of it
Prophets of the Old Testament
Sufferings of Christ - Isaiah 52:13-53:12
Isaiah 52:13–53:12 NASB95
Behold, My servant will prosper, He will be high and lifted up and greatly exalted. Just as many were astonished at you, My people, So His appearance was marred more than any man And His form more than the sons of men. Thus He will sprinkle many nations, Kings will shut their mouths on account of Him; For what had not been told them they will see, And what they had not heard they will understand. Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth. By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due? His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth. But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand. As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities. Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.
The Glories to Follow
Isaiah 11:1-9
Isaiah 11:1–9 NASB95
Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And He will delight in the fear of the Lord, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision by what His ears hear; But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist. And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, And the leopard will lie down with the young goat, And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little boy will lead them. Also the cow and the bear will graze, Their young will lie down together, And the lion will eat straw like the ox. The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra, And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den. They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea.
Yet, the OT prophets suffered still, but were faithful - for them, AND for US. God’s word endures. The
The Angels LONG to Watch this Salvation
Our present Salvation is by grace through faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
He lived, He suffered, He died, He rose again, He WILL RETURN!

PREPARE for HOLINESS

1 Peter 1:13–16 NASB95
Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Teaching Points

Therefore - this is our response to this great and glorious salvation, to being born again. There are 2 commands here to follow - have HOPE, be HOLY
FIX your HOPE COMPLETELY on GRACE
fix - to set firmly (rock climbing)
completely - teleios - 100%
Grace - undeserved favor - must have humility to understand grace - IT IS FROM GOD, WE DON’T DESERVE IT!
Fully realized at the revelation of Jesus Christ
PREPARE for ACTION -
Obedience is a conscious act of the will. Christians in conflict need a tough-minded holiness that is ready for action.
Raymer, R. M. (1985). 1 Peter. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 2, p. 843). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.
BE SOBER - be self-controlled, ready to respond, not react
Camp sunburns...
DO NOT BE CONFORMED
conformed - remodeled, shaped
to former lusts - desires, longings
Be HOLY
Like God is HOLY
in ALL your Behavior - comings and goings, wheelings about - day to day life:
in your house
in your car
at the gas station
at the restaurant
watching sports
ULTIMATE Example of this:
John 18:1–11 NASB95
When Jesus had spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples over the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden, in which He entered with His disciples. Now Judas also, who was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often met there with His disciples. Judas then, having received the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons. So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. So when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. Therefore He again asked them, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,” to fulfill the word which He spoke, “Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.” Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus. So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”
