OPEN: Everyday we exchange words. “Nathan get out of bed; Babe I love you; Hurry up were going to be late for Easter Service . . .” Even those with impaired hearing using signs to convey words.
God used words to create the cosmos, “And God said ‘Let there be light’ and there was light . . .”
It would be really difficult for us to live with one another without words. I know some of use more words than others. 2013 BBC reported that women speak on average 20,000 words while men about 7,000 a day. However other studies and new studies say that its an even race.
God can communicate in a lot of ways but the most profound way He has spoken to us is through words. The Bible actually describes three specific words, The Written word, the Spoken word, and the Living word.
These three forms of “word” are always used to convey the person, character and truth of God.
NOTE: Jesus has been dead three days now after suffering on the cross. The grave is empty, Jesus followers are really messed up, and Luke gives a detailed account of these two men on a road called Emmaus, 7 miles form Jerusalem, discussing what had taken place. Jesus approaches and prevents them from recognizing Him. (Probably a cloaking device)
A. “What are these words . . .” V.13-18
1. Sounds like an alien but the idea is what are you guys talking about?
2. Cleopas says to the Creator of the cosmos who just suffered for him, “are you the only one visiting Jerusalem . . .” who doesn’t know what’s going on? V.18
B. “What Things?” V.19-24
1. Jesus the Nazarene a prophets who was “mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and people. v.19
2. Chief priests and rulers killed Him. v.20
3. Our hope was Jesus was going to redeem Israel but its the third day and His body is gone. v.21-24
C. Jesus Discusses New Life With These Two guys and they won’t be able to stop discussing New Life. V.25-35
1. It’s foolish not to investigate and believe “all the prophets have spoken.” v.25
2. Christ had to suffer, let me explain it starting with Moses, I’ll go through the prophets concerning Jesus in the scriptures. v.27
3. Every time you take this bread “Remember Me!” v.30-31
NOTE: “While He was Speaking, their eyes were opened and they recognized Him.
4. “were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road while He was explaining the scriptures to us.”
CLOSE: They got up and went to Jerusalem and they all exchanged their experiences “The Lord has really risen.”
His word is what He has chosen to convince of us that He is Life and to give us opportunities to experience that life.
We have to go after Him with everything. Joshua 1:8 “do not let this word depart from your mouth . . .”, Psalm 1 “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the path of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers . . .”
If you long to know life, to have your heart truly burn with a divine understanding then we must become a lover of His word!
