Psalm 69:29–31 NKJV
But I am poor and sorrowful; Let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high. I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with thanksgiving. This also shall please the Lord better than an ox or bull, Which has horns and hooves.
BIG IDEA: God is magnified when we give thanks by faith during difficulties.

Magnifying God

Introduction
Do you want to magnify God?
A great task often requires help.
God will help you magnify him, but it may not be how you think.

1. The Setting for David’s Thanks

Pervasive Sorrow - vs. 1-29a
The causes and details of our sorrow vary, but the experience David describes is not unusual.

A Sea of Troubles - vs. 1-5

The Sting of Insult - vs. 6-12

The Cry - vs. 13-18

The Cup - vs. 19-21

The Curse - vs. 22-28

Up to this point, Christ and his passion have been so evidently foreshadowed (see on verses 4, 9, 21) that we are almost prepared now for a plea approximating to ‘Father, forgive them’. The curse which comes instead is a powerful reminder of the new thing which our Lord did at Calvary. It is not simply an emotional difference. David’s anger was fanned by his zeal for justice, which the Old Testament largely exists to keep before us; but Christ came to crown justice with atonement. Zeal for this, now it is accomplished, will stir us differently: cooling anger instead of kindling it; fostering rather than stifling compassion

Many have experienced these circumstances, but not all respond the same way.  How you think determines how you thank
Prospective Salvation - vs. 29b
David had an intimacy with God. His first thought was to plea for God’s help (69:1)
But David goes beyond a desperate plea to God magnifying thanksgiving!

2. The Significance of David’s Thanks

David’s response magnified God and pleased God.

God is magnified because of when we give thanks - vs. 30

David offers a song of praise in a time of trouble.
Praise in pain speaks in ways that praise in prosperity cannot.
The hardest praise can be the highest praise.
Job 1:20–21 NKJV
Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
Don’t let short-term troubles rob you of a long-term perspective.
2 Corinthians 4:16–18 NKJV
Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
Job 19:23–26 NKJV
“Oh, that my words were written! Oh, that they were inscribed in a book! That they were engraved on a rock With an iron pen and lead, forever! For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God,
Psalm 69:30 NKJV
I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.
we normally magnify what is small, but here we want others to see how great God is
some see God as too small, but we can magnify him with our praise
God is magnified when we give thanks during difficulties
We declare that He is
We declare that He is our Hope - not desperation, but confident expectation
this is premature praise - thankfulness for what will be

God is pleased because of how we give thanks - vs. 31

the simplicity of the offering
thanks not expensive animals
thanksgiving demonstrates humility
it gives up something of self - our glory is diminished
Praise in pain glorifies God not self.
Psalm 51:17 NKJV
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.
it glorifies God
the genuineness of the offering
contrast: right offering but it comes from false prophets - hypocrites with the wrong heart
Isaiah 66:1–3 NKJV
Thus says the Lord: “Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest? For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist,” Says the Lord. “But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word. “He who kills a bull is as if he slays a man; He who sacrifices a lamb, as if he breaks a dog’s neck; He who offers a grain offering, as if he offers swine’s blood; He who burns incense, as if he blesses an idol. Just as they have chosen their own ways, And their soul delights in their abominations,
compare: widow’s mite
God is pleased because of WHEN we give thanks and because of HOW we give thanks
conclusion
How are you magnifying God? Do those around you know that God is great?
