What do you do, if you’re a disciple after Jesus is crucified? This would be a very complicated time for Jesus’ followers, but Jesus did state that He had to go away so that another could come and help us. Who is this Holy Spirit we hear about in the bible? What happened during the waiting, and what does it all mean to us.
Prior to Jesus’ ascension into heaven Jesus appeared to his disciples, I believe to put their minds at ease. God may call you to do radical things, but that doesn’t mean he won’t reassure you in the process.
Acts 1:3 ESV
He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
After Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection He spent 40 days with his disciples teaching them before he ascended into Heaven. Now there isn’t much on what was taught about during those 40 days, but God made sure that the disciples were equipped to do what they were called to do in the coming years and he explains how he will do this in
Acts 1:5 ESV
for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
What is the primary purpose of the Holy Spirit in our lives?
You’ll notice if you read through the book of Acts that the first First the disciples began to
Speak in Other Tongues
Now there are 3 different types of Tongues that the bible references and will get into that here shortly, but not today because I don’t want to focus on the sign of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, but rather I want to focus on the Result of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
The Main Result of the Holy Spirit living inside of us is:
Christians become more effective in spreading the gospel.
I have been asked numerous times “what is my purpose in life?” Our entire purpose in life is this:
To bring people to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ
The avenue in which we do that is different for everyone’s calling, but that is the root of every calling.
Think of it like this:
If you were in a brurning building What would be your primary goal? Some of us would say to get out—to save ourselves, Some of us would say to get everyone out of the building.
If our primary goal is to save everyone from the fire then every action we take, every word we speak, every step we take will ultimately be to get people out of the building. We wouldn’t stop to argue with someone on weather the building is on fire or not. We wouldn’t waist time playing or eating or singing. We wouldn’t even be waisting time wondering what our purpose is:
With the limited amount of time we have we would be focused and driven with a purpose: to tell everyone about the fire and to point them to the quickest way out.
If you believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior this is the reason you are still alive. Many Christians confuse purpose with avenue.
Our purpose to bring people to Jesus the avenue is different.
The Holy Spirit give us boldness and knowledge in connecting our avenue to our purpose. Every day we see zombies. Right the biggest secret in this life: The Zombie apocalypse is real. Dead people walk this Earth everyday. If we aren’t alive in Christ we are dead in our sins.
Acts 1:8 ESV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Power-The boldness, the ability to talk about Jesus to those who need to know Jesus.
Our purpose is not to set the church straight. It’s not to prove we are right. It’s not win arguements. Our purpose is to spread the gospel. Preach the word of God. How?
Well if the Result is salvation: Then the gifts we receive help us bring people to salvation.
Galatians 5:22–25 ESV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
Notice every one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit expresses who God is to other people.
Love-for other people
Joy- A joyful person is easy to be around
Peace- Someone who isn’t seeking to fight is easier to be around
Kindness
Goodness
Faithfulness- A faithful person is always there- Just as Christ is faithful
Gentleness- You win more bees with honey than poison.
Self control- I love the definition of self control
the ability to control oneself, in particular one's emotions and desires or the expression of them in one's behavior, especially in difficult situations.
If you are out of control or your life’s out of control you cannot point to Jesus.
no matter where you are or what you are doing you are purposefully place in the perfect situation to portray Christ to those in our proximity.
Over the coming weeks we are going to discuss the fruits of the Spirit and how they impact our lives.
