We Looked at a Song of David that We Can Also Find in Psalm 18
We Read Some Pretty Amazing Things About God and His Care for His People

2 Samuel 23

2 Samuel 23:1 (NASB)
Now these are the last words of David. David the son of Jesse declares, The man who was raised on high declares, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel
Last Words of David?
This Might be Referring to His Final Teaching
David is Described in Several Different Ways
The Son of Jesse
The Man Raised On High
Lifted Up from Obscurity to King Over an Entire Nation
The Anointed One (Messiah) of God
God’s Chosen One
The Sweet Psalmist of Israel
Whoever Wrote this Had High Regards for King David
2 Samuel 23:2–4 (NASB)
“The Spirit of YHWH spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue. The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spoke to me, ‘He who rules over men righteously, Who rules in the fear of God, Is as the light of the morning when the sun rises, A morning without clouds, When the tender grass springs out of the earth, Through sunshine after rain.’”
God Compares the Person Who Rules Over Others Righteously and in Fear of God to a Sunrise in the Morning on the Damp Grass
Many Have Been Confused as to What this Means
The Original Hebrew Text is Hard to Figure Out
But When I Think about a Beautiful Cloudless Sunrise on Fresh New Grass, I Think of Peace, Blessings, and Hope
Righteous, God-Fearing Leaders Bring Peace, Blessings, and Hope to Their People
2 Samuel 23:5 (NASB95)
“Truly is not my house so with God? For He has made an everlasting covenant with me, Ordered in all things, and secured; For all my salvation and all my desire, Will He not indeed make it grow?”
This First Sentence Can Be Translated 2 Opposite Ways
Truly David’s House Ruled with Righteousness and the Fear of God
Truly David’s House Did Not Rule with Righteousness and the Fear of God
One Says that God Made an Everlasting Covenant with David Because of the Righteousness of His House
The Other Says that God Made an Everlasting Covenant Despite the Unrighteousness of His House
2 Samuel 23:5 (NKJV)
“Although my house is not so with God, Yet He has made with me an everlasting covenant, Ordered in all things and secure. For this is all my salvation and all my desire; Will He not make it increase?”
I Don’t Know for Sure Which Translation is Correct, but it Doesn’t Really Matter to Understand the Heart of the Verse
Regardless of Why God Made an Everlasting Covenant with David, He Made it None the Less
What was this Everlasting Covenant?
2 Samuel 7:1–16 (NASB)
Now it came about when the king lived in his house, and YHWH had given him rest on every side from all his enemies, that the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within tent curtains.”
Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your mind, for YHWH is with you.”
But in the same night the word of YHWH came to Nathan, saying,
“Go and say to My servant David, ‘Thus says YHWH, “Are you the one who should build Me a house to dwell in? For I have not dwelt in a house since the day I brought up the sons of Israel from Egypt, even to this day; but I have been moving about in a tent, even in a tabernacle.
Wherever I have gone with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel, which I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’
Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, ‘Thus says YHWH of hosts, “I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people Israel.
I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth.
I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, nor will the wicked afflict them any more as formerly, even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. YHWH also declares to you that YHWH will make a house for you.
When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men, but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.”
When David Wanted to Make God a House, God Promised to Make David a House/Dynasty
God will Establish the Kingdom of One of David’s Descendants
And that Descendant will Build a House for God
And God will Establish His Throne Forever
God’s Lovingkindness will Never Depart from Him
There are Hints of this that Point to Solomon, but its Ultimate Fulfilment is Absolutely in Jesus
God Has Arranged and Secured this Great Covenant
And Through this Covenant, David Finds All of His Salvation and All of His Desire
Jesus, the Fulfilment of God’s Covenant with David, is the Source of All of Our Salvation and Desires as Well
2 Samuel 23:6–7 (NASB)
“But the worthless, every one of them will be thrust away like thorns, Because they cannot be taken in hand; But the man who touches them Must be armed with iron and the shaft of a spear, And they will be completely burned with fire in their place.”
David Sees His Salvation Through His Descendant Who will Sit on the Throne Forever
But He Also Sees the Wicked as Dangerous Thorns that will be Uprooted by Force and Burned Up in Fire
This is the Same Imagery that His Descendant Would One Day Use to Speak of the Wicked at His Return in Judgement
The Rest of this Chapter is Dedicated to the Might Men Who Served David Faithfully
We are Told about Some of the Most Amazing Things that They Did in Their Faithfulness to Their King
Josheb-Basshebeth Killed 800 Men at One Time
Eleazar Killed so Many Philistines that His Hand Became Tired
Shammah Defended a Field of Crops from the Philistines While Everyone Else Fled, and God Brought about Victory Through Him
3 of David’s Mighty Men Heard David Say that He Wanted Water from Philistine Occupied Bethlehem (His Home)
They Broke into Bethlehem and Brought Water Back to Him
Since They Showed Such Zeal and Faithfulness to the King’s Needs, David Poured Out the Water as an Offering to God
David Didn’t See Himself Worthy of Such a Sacrifice
Abishai (Joab’s Brother) Killed 300 Men with His Spear
Benaiah Killed 2 Lion-Like Warriors of Moab
He Also Killed an Actual Lion in a Pit on a Snowy Day
He Also Killed an Egyptian with the Egyptian’s Own Spear
After Telling Some of These Impressive Stories, We are Given a List of the Rest of the Names
The Final Name:
2 Samuel 23:39 (NASB)
Uriah the Hittite; thirty-seven in all.
Uriah was One of David’s Mighty Faithful Men

There are 3 Things that Stood Out to Me While Studying this Chapter

With God, All Things are Possible

Jesus is My Salvation & My Desire

David’s Last Prophetic Teaching Dealt with His Covenant with God that Leads Us to Jesus
Isn’t that Fitting for the Last Teaching of David?
He Looked Forward with Hope to the Fulfilment of God’s Covenantal Promise
He Saw Jesus as His Salvation and His Desire
Jesus is the Salvation and Desire of His People Still Today
I Desire Life Never Ending, Joy Never Fading, and Peace Forever
Jesus Gives that Through the Salvation He Offers
When Placing Our Faith and Allegiance in Him, We are Given a Promise of Salvation Until it is Ultimately Fulfilled at His Return
