The Foreknowledge of God
The purpose and understanding of the trinity
The effects of salvation in everyday life
Peter intends his readers to understand who they are before God so that they can be who they are in society.
1 Peter 1:1–2 ESV
1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

Background

Peter is the author and his title is an apostle of Jesus Christ
Written around 62-64 AD ~ 30 years after Jesus dies and is resurrected
Pentecost
The church is on the move - NT being written
Philippians was likely written prior to this

v1

1 Peter 1:1 ESV
1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
Elect - Does God Elect or we do?
Peter uses 'Elect’ 4 times
The OT reference is in Numbers 18 about Levities and Priests who are chosen by God for his purposes
Some have read this as only some people are saved
Unlimited atonement
All are welcomed
None should perish, but that all will be saved
Does God do the electing or do we?
Stupid question
Are you married to your spouse, or is your spouse married to you?
Better question
Difference questions than - which comes first, chicken or the egg - God comes first
God has chosen you; will you chose him?
IDK - it doesn’t feel like it right now
That’s is how the Christians in these 4 places felt.

Exiles of the Dispersion

Dispersion - Jews term
Acts 2
Acts 2:8 lists
Cappadocia
Pontus
Asia
Exiles of the Dispersion = Strangers and Aliens
REJECTS
Christ followers in non-christian places
America is becoming post Christian
but don’t get lost in that - this is not our home

v2

1 Peter 1:2 ESV
2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
It’s all prepositions - Trinity
Prepositions show a relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence.
I sat ON the chair
on the chair describes where
The letter is written to all the people who are exiles in these places - who can be clarified by the following:
According to the foreknowledge of God
We don’t know what God knows
Noah's Ark
- God’s design
by the means of the HS to sanctify
in, by, through - agent
Washing machine
Tabernacle
for participation with Jesus - obedience and sprinkling with the blood of Jesus
For, to, as a result - a reason
= Obedience to God like Jesus (giving up status and loving to the point of death) - shed his blood
Obedience - Noah
Fort Bragg, North Carolina: A likely clerical error sent a supply clerk with the 82nd Airborne Division out the door of an airplane on his first parachute jump without any formal training. Army Specialist Jeff Lewis, 23, who landed unhurt, said he was just doing what a good soldier is supposed to do when he made the jump: Follow orders. "The Army said I was airborne-qualified," Lewis said. "I wasn't going to question it."
Because Jesus shed his blood, we can now live in forgiveness and obedience to God.
So the people who Identified as
known by God to be in these towns
being made clean by the Spirit
for obedience to Jesus
May Grace and Peace will be multiplied in you
BTW Grace and Peace are not just Christian words

Why does this matter to me?

You are welcomed by God; will you chose his salvation?
Your identity, like Peters, is changed.
If you do choose God’s salvation, you are invited into
living as a foreigner who has been:
Chosen by God
Empowered by the Spirit (for a holy purpose)
To participate with Jesus in obedience (Crucifixion) and living as a living sacrifice.
In your home town and at your job.
You will likely be rejected but still have grace and peace multiplying in your life.
The challenge - When society rejects us realize we are partnering with Jesus in obedience.
Don’t see society rejecting us the problem to solve. Rather see rejection of society resulting from partnership and obedience with Jesus.
Jump out of the plane
Earth was not Jesus' home.
Jesus is preparing a place for us.
Thus we can live obedient lives with Grace and Peace multiplying in us and affecting the world around us.
The goal of Christianity is not for the world to become comfortable for us but for us to become comfortable with living for God.
According to the will of God,
By the work of the Holy Spirit to clean us
and for suffering in obedience like Jesus did.
