I. Introduction

A. Revelation is the “apocalypse.”

Revelation 1:1 ESV
1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,

B. The apostle John, and author of the gospel of John, and the general epistles 1-3 John is the writer.

C. John was on the island of Patmos when he saw this Revelation of Jesus Christ about 95-96 AD.

Revelation 1:9 ESV
9 I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

D. John makes many allusions from the Old Testament.

II. Preparation for the Revelation

John was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day!

10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet

III. Divine Description

Revelation 1:10–16 ESV
10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet 11 saying, “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.” 12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.

“Son of Man” can the judge as in Rev. 2-3.

Compare with Rev. 2:18 and Rev. 19:12.

5. Feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace (v. 15a)

Burnished Bronze – not sure but some have thought it to be like ‘electrum,’ a mixed metal of great brilliance.

Eyes and Feet description may signify Christ’s movement among the churches to instill His purity into His followers.

6. Voice was like the roar of many waters (v. 15b)

Ezekiel 43:2 ESV
2 And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the east. And the sound of his coming was like the sound of many waters, and the earth shone with his glory.

7. Seven stars in his right hand (v. 16a)

8. Two-edged sword came out of his mouth (v. 16b)

4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

9. Face was like the sun shinning in full strength (v. 16c)

IV. The Effect on John and the Response given. (v. 17)

A. John collapsed at his feet (v. 17a)

B. He laid his hand on him. (v. 17b)

C. He told John not to fear. (v. 17c)

V. The identity of the One

A. I am the First and the Last

2. The First and the Last

12 “Listen to me, O Jacob, and Israel, whom I called! I am he; I am the first, and I am the last.

It expresses not only eternity, but also infinitude, “the boundless life which embraces all while it transcends all

B. I am the Living One
