Intro: Who is it that has it all figured out in our culture?

1 Corinthians 1:20–25 CSB
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn’t God made the world’s wisdom foolish? For since, in God’s wisdom, the world did not know God through wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of what is preached. For the Jews ask for signs and the Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles. Yet to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God, because God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.
John 6:1–9 CSB
1 After this, Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias). 2 A huge crowd was following him because they saw the signs that he was performing by healing the sick. 3 Jesus went up a mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, a Jewish festival, was near. 5 So when Jesus looked up and noticed a huge crowd coming toward him, he asked Philip, “Where will we buy bread so that these people can eat?” 6 He asked this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread wouldn’t be enough for each of them to have a little.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 “There’s a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish—but what are they for so many?”

Point #1: Jesus’ Popularity is Skyrocketing and It Creates a Logistical Challenge!

1. At this point the Israelites were searching for their promised Messiah!
A. Every move Jesus made, every word he spoke dripped with Divine purpose and fulfillment...
i. This point was expounded by Jesus healing the sick an lame that were present...
ii. Jesus tries to get away on the mountain with his disciples but the crowds keep coming...
iii. It was the time of Passover, the most prominent Jewish holiday...
B. At this point the crowd numbered 15,000
In the Ancient Near-East in the first century only men (5,000) were counted in the numbering of a crowd.
So it is easy estimate that if there were families were following and learning from Jesus there were wives and children present as well, thus approximately 15,000 were actually present.
2. Jesus decides that he is going to test the Twelve, saying, “How are we going to get enough bread to feed these people?”
A. Jesus knew already what he was planning to do...
B. Philip clarifies the challenge 200 denarii would not be enough for each person to have one bite!
C. Andrew says, here is a boy with 5 loaves (rolls) and 2 fish… (But How Will This Help?)
John 6:10–15 CSB
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place; so they sat down. The men numbered about five thousand. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks he distributed them to those who were seated—so also with the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were full, he told his disciples, “Collect the leftovers so that nothing is wasted.” 13 So they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces from the five barley loaves that were left over by those who had eaten. 14 When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, “This truly is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 Therefore, when Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

Point #2: Jesus Miraculously Provides Food for Approximately 15,000 People!

1. Jesus has a plan!
A. He had the Twelve tell everyone to sit down...
2. He takes the bread and fish and prays over them, then he distributes them and distributes them and distributes them…till everyone eats their fill!
A. So lets take a moment to consider the naysayers...
i. Some liberal theologians do not see a miracle here…they see a boy willing to share his lunch which then encourages the crowd to pull out their hidden food and then have a willingness to share with one another so that he entire crowd became fed...
a. BTW is this were true then the depiction of Jesus multiplying the bread is a lie!
b. If this was true, John would not have been willing to be boiled in oil and exiled to Papmos for his testimony about the truth of Jesus Christ!
3. If Jesus really did multiply the bread and fish we have ask ourselves, “Who is this that has limitless resources? Who is this who can overcome the nature laws of our world by the supernatural?”
A. If Jesus really did this miracle He is God!!!
B. At this point Jesus directs them to collect the left overs and there was 12 baskets full of left overs!
i. God’s provision is abundant! He gives us what we need and more!
4. At this point the people see Jesus’ potential and were about to come and try to make him King by force!
A. So Jesus sends the Twelve across the sea on a boat and they withdraws up the mountain to pray.
i. Why? Because after the miraculous provision of God there will always come temptation, the Devil hopes to undo the good God just did by disqualifying the person that the Lord just worked through!

John Gives Us Two Throw-in miracles!

Summarize John 6:16-21
John 6:16–21 CSB
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. Darkness had already set in, but Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 A high wind arose, and the sea began to churn. 19 After they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea. He was coming near the boat, and they were afraid. 20 But he said to them, “It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 21 Then they were willing to take him on board, and at once the boat was at the shore where they were heading.

Who is this that can walk on water? Who is this that can miraculously transport 13 people?

TS: Continuing in John 6:22
John 6:22–25 CSB
22 The next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea saw there had been only one boat. They also saw that Jesus had not boarded the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone off alone. 23 Some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

Point #3: The Crowds Go In Search of Jesus and His Disciples...

A. The next day the people are hungry again...
John 6:26–29 CSB
26 Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled. 27 Don’t work for the food that perishes but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set his seal of approval on him.” 28 “What can we do to perform the works of God?” they asked. 29 Jesus replied, “This is the work of God—that you believe in the one he has sent.”

Point #4: Jesus Realigns the Crowds Priorities!

1. Jesus calls them out: You look for me not because you saw the signs but because you ate and were filled...
A. Jesus tells them what really matters: Believing in the Son of Man which leads to eternal life!
The people thought that they needed bread, what they really needed was salvation!
2. The people ask for a sign...
A. Jesus tells them to believe in Him!
i. Scripture tells us that there is one unforgivable sin (The Sin Rejecting the Holy Spirit), the sin of not believing in Jesus!
John 6:30–34 CSB
30 “What sign, then, are you going to do so that we may see and believe you?” they asked. “What are you going to perform? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat. 32 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, Moses didn’t give you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 Then they said, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

Point #5: The People Demand another Sign…and More Bread!

1. The crowd brings up Moses, “Moses gave our ancestor's bread from heaven...
2. They are essentially asking Jesus, “Can you miraculously provide for us like that?”
A. Could God make everyone of us win the lottery?
i. Yes!
B. Why doesn’t he?
ii. Because for most of us it would not be in our best interest! Many who become incredibly wealthy stop relying on God.
John 6:35–42 CSB
35 “I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “No one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in me will ever be thirsty again. 36 But as I told you, you’ve seen me, and yet you do not believe. 37 Everyone the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. 39 This is the will of him who sent me: that I should lose none of those he has given me but should raise them up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him will have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” 41 Therefore the Jews started grumbling about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They were saying, “Isn’t this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”

Point #6: Jesus Declares that He is the Bread of Life…Everyone the Father Gives Him Will Come to Him…the One That Comes to Jesus Will Never Be Cast Out!

Jesus tells them His Mission from God!
I have come down from heaven not of my own will but rather because of the will of the Father who sent him!
John 6:39-40 “And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

How are we saved?

1. Hear the Word of God
2. Believe the Word of God
3. Repent of our sin
4. Confess with our mouth that Jesus Christ is our Lord
5. Submit to Jesus in baptism
John 6:43–51 CSB
43 Jesus answered them, “Stop grumbling among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: And they will all be taught by God. Everyone who has listened to and learned from the Father comes to me— 46 not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God. He has seen the Father. 47 “Truly I tell you, anyone who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that anyone may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

Point #7: Jesus is the Provision for Mankind’s Redemption and Salvation from Sin and Death!
