Steady As She Goes

Psa 80:18  So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.
Psa 80:19  Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
In maritime travel, once the ship has launched and moved out into the waters and have corrected it’s course and speed, the captain is often given to say steady as she goes.
At least that’s what they say in the movies..
It simply means for those who steer the vessel to stay on the path and not to make any sudden changes in maneuvers.
Any changes of self will by the seaman will take the ship off course that the captain has plotted and will cause the ship to go off course and be delayed from making it’s port at the desired date or even worse it could cause the ship to veer off into dangerous waters of rocks, icebergs, whirlpools or sand barges.
As we think about the ships of old; they were powered by the wind and sails of the ships.
Note the wind was often contrary and could change in directions, velocity or intensity without notice.
As we know of the Apostles Paul journey to Rome the contrary winds of the Northeaster broke the Alexandrian ship into.
The error here was that the captain of the ship disobeyed Paul’s appeal not to sail and then was faced with certain destruction of the ship.
They were on the right course but were sailing at the wrong time.
Jonah on the other hand was sailing at the right time on a ship destined for it’s correct course. However Jonah’s course was wrong. He was sailing for Tarshish when God had directed him to Nineveh.
Once again the contrary wind came to destroy the ship. Yet this wind was from God to steer Jonah back to his proper course.
David was on course as king of Israel when on morning he veered off course to the waters of Bathsheba. The waters looked calm and inviting but he soon found out they were a whirlpool of detriment that was steadily pulling him under.
God sent Nathan the prophet to tell him he was off course.
Actually David stated that that man was off course not knowing he was speaking of himself. Nathan said David, you are the man...
Paul made it to Rome but he was a recovered shipwreck refugee....because of someone’s error who was in charge of his passage.
Jonah made it to Nineveh but he came as an outcast rescue smelling with fish vomit....
David made it but he came out as an adulterer -murderer-;;;;
See the issue is that when you say steady as she goes…you must be sure you are on the proper course.
You see we can be motoring along, full steam ahead going farther and farther off course and making ourselves more distant from God.
Have you been traveling and you pat yourself on the back as you go saying I’m making good time. Only to discover your good time is miles and miles in the wrong direction?
And to make matters worse we then attempt to supervise our turning around to go in the proper direction.
Now we were so intelligent that we did not know we wrong in the first place but now we know how to get back on track when we did not know we were off track.
And after a few futile tries, someone in the car demands .....ask for directions...........This was before GPS......... and even now you get lost with Google Maps......
I can get so far off course that I need help from someone who knows the way back to my proper destination.
You know you are lost when the surrounding began looking too strange and unfamiliar.
Israel knew they were lost when they viewed the strange land of bondage.
And they had to remain there for an uncomfortable period of time.
We are mistreated......disrespected....abused....misused.....
If you can just turn us and put us back on the right course of serving you....we will obey you with total commitment.
God is waiting for America to cry out turn us oh Lord and cause your face to shine upon us.... And we will serve you....
plagues…wars.....911 we all went to church for a spell....
economic collapse after Enron ....we prayed.....but things got better and we forgot about prayer.
We are faced with the COVID-19 but we are not repenting.
We had West Nile....
Ebola virus.....
Fires.....Floods.....Tornadoes....Hurricanes
We turn just to get out of the jam but not to repent and walk in God’s statues.
But in these late stages of time I need some certainty of my walk in Christ.
I don’t know it all ....So God just turn me any way… If you turn me I’ll be put on the proper course...
A few degrees off is a few degrees too many.......
Just a few degrees off and an incoming space capsule instead of entering the earth’s atomosphere correctly it will bounce off and be thrown into deep space.
Asaph in our Psalm asked the Lord to redirect Israel back into their right course of worship....
The Jews of Israel allowed others to stir them wrong and off course of Jehovah’s worship........The King....the false prophets....the well to do Jews....
The captain steered Paul into danger..even after being warned ...
Don’t let others steer your ship…God had given you the right to command your life and chose which path you take.
But every now and then your life life needs re-calibrating
You know when you get off course traveling and the GPS says recalculating.
Asaph says God we need you to recalculate...
Psa 80:18  So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.
Psa 80:19  Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
I need Jesus to recalculate my G P S GOALS PURPOSE SPIRIT
