A True Disciple
One that remains
one that is in the word
one that spends time with Jesus
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.
One that bears much fruit
if we are not abiding we don’t bear fruit
What is the fruit?
Love ,Joy ,Peace, Patience, Gentleness, Goodness, Kindness, Faithfulness, and Self control, righteousness
My Father is glorified by this: that you bear much fruit, and prove to be my disciples.
True disciples are loved
“Just as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love.
The evidence of abiding in Jesus is keeping His commandments
If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.
and another result of being a true disciple is Joy
I have spoken these things to you in order that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be made complete.
The command is to love one another
This is my commandment: that you love one another just as I have loved you.
Jesus was patient with the men
taught them the same lesson over and over
took care of them
protected them
rescued them
fed them
love is the only way one can get through the trials of being a disciple
taking care of one another

Lets look at what Jesus’ love did
GOD
Made himself of no reputation became human servant
born poor,
to be executed on a certain date
all of these things we ourselves have no control over
He loved people who hated him
Romans 1 18,
this was Gods view of man when Jesus died for them
For while we were still helpless, yet at the proper time Christ died for the ungodly. For only rarely will someone die on behalf of a righteous person (for on behalf of a good person possibly someone might even dare to die), but God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
when Jesus died for us we were not considered friends
but the incredible love Jesus had caused Him to die for His enemies.
we have rebelled against God.
we were helpless, and deservedly so
Jesus’ death was a spiritual death
He was separated from the Father
what does spiritual death look to us
Hell, lake of fire without burning up
eternity outside the presence of God
wild waves of the sea foaming up their own shameful deeds, wandering stars, for whom the deep gloom of darkness has been reserved for eternity.
He will rain coals on the wicked. Burning sulfur and scorching wind will be the portion of their cup.
There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.”
A cloud vanishes, and it goes away, so he who goes down to Sheol will not come up.
And the smoke of their torture went up forever and ever, and those who worshiped the beast and his image did not have rest day and night, along with anyone who received the mark of his name.
But the wicked are like the churning sea, that is not able to keep quiet, and its waters toss up mire and mud.
Your pride is brought down to Sheol, and the sound of your harps; maggots are spread out beneath you like a bed, and your covering is worms.
God provides
And this is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light and there is no darkness in him at all.
In him was life, and the life was the light of humanity.
And we have come to know and have believed the love that God has in us. God is love, and the one who resides in love resides in God, and God resides in him.
O Yahweh, your loyal love extends into the heavens, your faithfulness unto the clouds.
The God who girded me with strength, and made safe my way,
But the land that you are about to cross into to take possession of it is a land of hills and valleys, and by the rain of the heaven it drinks water,
For a child has been born for us; a son has been given to us. And the dominion will be on his shoulder, and his name is called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
These are all a snapshot of some one dieing and going to the lake of fire
someone who is spiritually dead
separated from all good forever
Jesus was separated from the Father for the first time in eternity
this is the love that Jesus shows to us
this is the ultimate love
This is the height of love we should strive for
Love Is A Command
Love Is A Command
Love does not depend on a feeling
love does not depend on if you like a person
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
You love someone because its what Jesus wants us to do
you love someone because its a fruit of the Spirit
you love someone because Jesus is in you and He Is Love
when we realize what Jesus did for us our gratefulness should abound with love for Him and others
No longer do I call you slaves, because the slave does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because everything that I have heard from my Father I have revealed to you.
as a child of God we are considered a friend of Jesus
a friend compared to a slave
to the Greeks the slave is considered a living tool
you have no input, do what you are told, your life is in the masters hands
are you a friend to Jesus
and as a friend we do what is asked
Chosen And Appointed
Chosen And Appointed
if you are a child of God God chose you
Here the disciples are being reminded of that
normally the student attaches themselves to a teaching Rabbi
but here is the opposite
Jesus chose the fishermen who probably would have never chose to be a student
chose a tax collector, hated by the Rabbi
Simon the zealot, who hates tax collectors
all these very unlikely men as the foundation of the Church
as also we are just as unlikely to be the church to the community
we have been appointed by Jesus to
live where we are
work where we do
meet here with the Church
have the family and friends that we do
God has appointed us to be love to these people
to bear fruit amongst these people
fruit that will last
Fruit that lasts is eternal fruit, only fruit from Heaven
pray one for another
pray for our mutual fruit, pray for out mutual needs
it wasn't until after Job prayed for his friends that God made him prosperous
These things I command you: that you love one another.
