28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.
29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

I. You’re in, stay in HIM
28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.
A. Abide is to dwell, remain or continue
a. It’s a call to faithful fellowship with God
1. It’s about Relationship!!
b. It’s a call to remain faithful to correct teaching of Jesus
— Remember just a few vs ago in… —
24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.
When the teaching o Jesus & his apostles remain in us we find ourselves remaining in God the Father & Son
i. what kind of relationship do we have w/God?
B. A faithful child to a loving father
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
a. You are loved
1. A Jesus Follower’s relationship isn’t
i. an employer - employee
ii. master - servant
iii. dictator - subject
2. If you are a Jesus Follower God loves you like a father to his child
i. He may correct us & discipline us,
-but it’s for our good, not our destruction
3. God loves you!!
b. The idea of God as a loving father doesn’t make sense to most folks
i. The world just doesn’t understand God’s true nature
ii. So, because they don’t know him, they can’t understand why we might faithfully continue to serve & love God
-W/that said, have u ever heard the phrase…
II. Like Father like child
A. A child resembles their parent
a. Illust:
B. That should be true in our relationship with God
a. For now that looks like righteousness
29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.
b. Righteousness means acting just in God’s eyes
C. One day we will be like him in a new way
2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
a. Jesus is coming back
When he does we shall be changed
We don’t fully know what that looks like practically
i. but…
b. When Jesus comes back we’ll be like him & not like we are
III. Responses to Jesus Return
A. We will respond to Jesus return in one of two ways
And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.
a. We will respond in confidence
Confidence from remaining faithful to Jesus and his teaching
Confidence from acting justly as God sees it

b. We will respond by shrinking back
Shrinking back comes from not remaining faithful to Jesus & his teaching or not acting justly as God sees it

8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”

A. How would u respond if Jesus returned today
a. Would u shrink back knowing your sin…
b. Or would you run to him w/confidence?
B. The truth is:
a.we’ve all sinned & what we’ve earned 4 our sin is death
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
b. But God so loved u that he sent Jesus 2 pay that penalty & take away the sin by dying on a cross.
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
c. Jesus’ death & resurrection paid the penalty 4 our sin which brokered a deal btwn us & God
1. bringing us in2 a right rel. w/God
18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;
19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
d. & (like we discussed earlier) the rel. we have is as a faithful child to a loving father

c. & Rose from the grave on the 3rd day
C. Confess Jesus is Lord of ur live & commit 2 a life o Following Jesus by serving others
a. Is there any reason why u don’t make Jesus ur LORD & Savior right now?
b. 2 make Jesus ur lord & savior u’re going 2 turn away from ur sin 2 God by talking 2 him through prayer; I’ll help u.

D. The Prayer
-Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, but I also know that You are Savior.
-Thank you for dying on the cross for me & rising again from the dead.
-Forgive me of my sins. I turn from them to You, & choose to follow You.
-I ask you to come into my life.
-Thank you for loving me & calling me & accepting me.
-Please Lord, continue to change me as I follow you every day called today
-In Jesus’ name I pray: amen
