Intercession

1 Timothy 2:1–2 ESV
1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

What is Intercession?

It is God’s method for involving God’s followers more completely in the totality of his plane
A Prayer offered on behalf of another.
When a prayer worrier intercedes he forgets his personal needs and focus all of his faith and prayer attention on others
to intercede is to meditate is to stand between the lost and the almighty God. praying that this person would know about God, and his salvation.
When we pray for others we do not stand with stretched out hands hoping to receive something for ourselves. We stand at God’s side working together with him. in the task of redeeming others.
true our prayer does not salve the sinner but some how it service to prepare his heart for the moment word reaches him of christ’s love.
Prayer is the believers common ground for christian service.
Spiritually speaking prayer is the divine equaliser, some preach others teach, a few sing publicly, but all can pray.
it all begins and ends with prayer.
“Every step in the progress of mission is traceable to prayer. It has been the preparation to every new triumph and the secret to all success” AT Person
But intercession is much more than merely praying for others. interceding It engaging an actual battle. There is a certain spirit of authority that must accompany a good deal of intercession.
“We have the authority to take from the enemy everything he is holding back. The chefe way of taking is by prayer. Take in Jesus great name” AJ Gordon
Intercessor hold the power and authority to claim back what rightfully belongs to God.
True God could salve Chinas massas in a moment but He waits for saints to join him in the battle.
Consider the example of Christ
Romans 8:34 ESV
34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
Intercession becomes a spirit of giving before it becomes a spirit of praying.

Prayer centered on others

When Jesus taught his disciples to pray it was clear the enfaces was centered on others.
The Lords pray begins with a plural possessive pronominal adjective. OUR
we were not taught to pray MY father but OUR father… give US… Lead US.... and forgive US
Matthew 6:9–15 ESV
9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
This prayer is a love prayer.
Every word is selfless it can not be prayed with out deep compassion.
John Calvin - “Our prayer must not be self centered it must arise not only because we feel our own need as a burden as we lay upon God, but also because we are bound up in love for our fellow men that we feel there need as our own.”
To make intercession for men is the most powerful and practical way in witch we can express our love for them.
Intercession should com before Petition. We are all selfish by nature And our selfishness is very apt to stick to us even when we are converted.
There is a tendency in us to think only of our own need, our own spiritual conflicts and our own progress in religion and forget others.
Because Jesus realise we would periodically laps into a spirit of selfishness He taught us to pray “thy kingdom come” before praying “give us this day our daily bread”
Jesus wanted us to become SOUL conscience instead of THING conscience.

Petition

Matthew 7:7 ESV
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
Share personal needs.
“Asking is the symbol of our desires” E. Stanley Jones
Somethings God will not give until we want them enough to ask.
Petition is that act of prayer to asking God for specific personal things. To seek an unselfish spiritual thing or material blessing is not unscriptural.
In the OT passage 1 Chronicles in the middle of the begets there is an interesting story. Commentaries comment that there are over 500 names are mentioned in the 1 chronicles begets list. yet in the mids of the exhausted list there is a story of one individual, a man named JABEZ.
The Prayer of Jabez
1 Chronicles 4:10 ESV
10 Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!” And God granted what he asked.
And that was IT… there is nothing else mentioned about Jabez except that God granted his prayer.

The rule of God

asking is the rule of the Kingdom the author of this phrase Charles Spurgeon “it is a rule that will never be altered in anybody's case if the Royal and divine Son of God cannot be exempted from the rule of asking that he may have you and I cannot expect to have the rule relaxed in our favor”.
God will bless you Elijah and send rain on Israel but Elijah must pray for it .
If a chosen nation is to prosper Samuel must plead for it
if the Jews are to be delivered Daniel must intercede.
God will bless Paul and the Nations will be converted through him But Paul must pray. Pray he did without ceasing his epistle show that he expected nothing except by asking for it.
In the same sense that our Christian experience is a personal experience prayer too must become very personal. We must not hesitate to pray like Jabez “bless me indeed”.
When Jesus faced the blind man He ask a question… what was the question?
Mark 10:51 ESV
51 And Jesus said to him, “What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.”
certainly our Lord new the mans infirmity but he wanted him to declare it - this is Petition.
“It is a confession of helplessness in a specific matter.”
Petition is not a prayer of a man opening heaven's doors to release Gods power, rather it is man opening his heart door to receive power already appropriated by God.
expressed helplessness is the key to opening that door thus giving God Access to our need We must define the need.

Keys to Petition

a petition should be complete - Each request ought To be carefully thought through before it is presented. avoid shallow petitions like “Lord bless me” or “Lord help the missionaries today” instead pray carefully through each request.
