The theme verse for our series is John 20:31
John 20:31 – “…these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.”
The purpose of this study is threefold. First, as we go through this together we will learn more and more about Jesus. We will get to know Him better, understand Him better and our faith and trust in Him will grow.
Second, as we go through this study together we will better know and understand the life that only Jesus can give. Life forever and life to the full. We will discover how we can know for certain that we will be in heaven and we will learn how to live on earth like we are going to live in heaven.
And third, we are not only knowing and growing in these things together, as we go through this we are being equipped to share these things with others.

16 For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.” 18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. 19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner. 20 “For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel. 21 “For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22 “For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. 24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 “For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27 and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. 28 “Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. 30 “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

One of the Puritans, J.C. Ryle, said this about the passage we just read:
“Nowhere else in the Gospels do we find our Lord making such a formal, systematic, orderly, regular statement of His own unity with the Father, His divine commission and authority, and the proofs of His Messiahship, as we find in this discourse”
What does it look like to honor Jesus?

(v. 21-23) “21 “For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes. 22 “For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.”
11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
He is worthy of honor because of WHO He is and because of WHAT He has done.
12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.” 13 And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.”
Honor the Lord with all of WHO you are...
20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Here are some practical application points. Not an exhaustive list, but a fairly comprehensive one, that comes right from our text here today.

(v. 24-25) 24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.

(v. 30) “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”
33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.
I love how Paul describes the approach we should have when seeking the will of God...
5 Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, 6 not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,
Peter described seeking the will of God his way…
1 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.
This leads me to the next point...
We honor Jesus when we...
Serve His way.

(v. 19) “Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.”

Dr. Adrian Rogers once said, “There is no cheap, easy or lazy way to serve the Lord.”
14 “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Parting thought…
Honoring Jesus is needs to become nor just what you do but who you truly are...
12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!”
These same people that “honored Jesus” when He entered Jerusalem where the same ones that cried out “crucify Him” later the same week.
Memory Verse of the Week:

Discussion Questions: (John 5:16-30)
Why did Jesus’ words cause this reaction? (v. 16-18) What is the significance?
How would you describe the Father and Son’s relationship? (v. 19-20)
In what ways does (v. 21) make it clear that Jesus is God?
Does (v. 22-23) change how you see Jesus? Does it give you a different perspective when considering the Older Testament narratives? How so?
(v. 24) is a clear explanation of how to be saved. How would you explain it to someone who doesn’t know Jesus?
The next five verses are all reiterating the previous verses. (v. 25-29) What parts are more clear or stick out to you now that didn’t before?
If this is true for Jesus, what does it mean for us? (v. 30) How should it change how we approach each day?
What else does this passage tell us about God? Why does it matter?
What else does the text teach us about ourselves?
