Acts 2:14–21 HCSB
14 But Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: “Men of Judah and all you residents of Jerusalem, let me explain this to you and pay attention to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it’s only nine in the morning. 16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out My Spirit on all humanity; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. 18 I will even pour out My Spirit on My male and female slaves in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will display wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below: blood and fire and a cloud of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and remarkable Day of the Lord comes. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Big Idea: Peter declares to the crowd that the Holy Spirit’s Arrival is a fulfillment of prophesy.
Peter is explaining (clarifying) that the event that has just occurred is not the result of drunkenness, but rather the result of the prophesy of the prophet Joel being fulfilled. (v.12-13, 15-16)
Not only is this prophesy being fulfilled, but by it being fulfilled has ushered in the dawn of the last days. (v.17)
The prophesy stated that God would pour out His Spirit onto His people. (v.17 & 18) This event would be a sign of the Last Days leading up to the Day of the Lord. (v.20)
What is the Day of the Lord? It is the day of God’s judgement and anger.

#1 You are living in the last days.

Illustration: Basketball Season – Summer workouts, pre-season practices, regular season practices leading up to the drop beat of the song for pre-game warm up. We are in the game now! The difference is that we do not know when the clock is going to hit “0” and the buzzer is going to sound.
The warning is that when the buzzer sounds judgement has come.
Peter alludes to how you can be saved from this coming Judgement in his use of Joel’s prophesy. (v.21) “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

#2 Jesus is God’s predetermined plan to save you.

Read
Acts 2:22–24 NASB95
22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— 23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. 24 “But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.
Big Idea: Jesus’ death on the cross was God’s predetermined plan for salvation for human and Jesus’ resurrection is proof of it.
Jesus was affirmed to be the Christ because God did many miracles, wonders and signs through Him. (v.22)
Jesus’ death was predetermined by God. It was always the plan. No one snatched Christ’s life from Him, rather God handed Him over to be killed.
“But God” isn’t that a wondrous pairing of words. You killed Him…But God…raised Him up
Ephesians 2:1–4 HCSB
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins 2 in which you previously walked according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler who exercises authority over the lower heavens, the spirit now working in the disobedient. 3 We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath as the others were also. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love that He had for us,
you were dead in your sin…children of wrath…But God…rich in mercy
It was impossible for death to hold Him!
We know this to be true because the resurrection proves it to be true.

#3 The resurrection is proof for you that Jesus ascended to reign in Heaven.

Big Idea: David prophesied about Jesus’ heavenly reign.
Read 2:25-36
David’s words refer to life without death and a victory over enemies. Peter points out correctly that David died, was buried and is still in his tomb.
God promised to have a descendant of David on the throne. This was mistaken by the Jews that the messiah would overthrow Rome. However, God’s kingdom is bigger and greater than Rome! It is an eternal kingdom, an eternal rule and reign.
Jesus was resurrected…so He did not experience decay. He proclaimed that they were witnesses to that resurrection. It wasn’t David that ascended into Heaven, but Jesus, whom they were also witnesses of. The coming of Holy Spirit was further proof of this as well.
Peter boldly proclaims that the Jesus whom they crucified is the very one whom God made Lord and Christ.

Application:

How are you doing with those three individuals that need the Gospel?
Have you been praying regularly for them?
Have you had a chance to share the gospel with them or invite them to church?
Do you have a sense of urgency to share the gospel?
We are in the Last Days and do not know when Christ will return.
Do you have confidence in your salvation?
The confidence in your salvation comes from the resurrection.
Have you been born again? Being born again is the only way to escape the coming judgment and wrath.
John 3:3 HCSB
3 Jesus replied, “I assure you: Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
says that you cannot see the kingdom of Heaven unless you have been born again.
1 Peter 1:3 HCSB
3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to His great mercy, He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
This new birth is a new is a result of the resurrection.
1 Peter 1:23 HCSB
23 since you have been born again —not of perishable seed but of imperishable—through the living and enduring word of God.
This new birth is spiritual, not physical.
Acts 2:21 HCSB
21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Is today the day that you call on the name of the Lord?
If today is the day, your next step is baptism, followed by discipleship.
