Growing Up in the Shire

I am very humbld by the opportunity to share with you this weekend
I grew up in the Sutherland Shire in the 1970’s in a very White part of Sydney
I grew up in a church going Christian family and I had never met an Aborigional person
All I knew

Our Move to Narranderra

In the late 1970’s my dad got a job in Narranderra
I had an awesome opportunity when I went to live in the country at the end of primary school and made friends with many of my Aborigional class mates. We would go fishing and swimming in the Murrumbigy.
Getting my brother to test the water jump
In fact the only friend to see me off at the airport was one of my Aborigional mates.

Coming Back to the Shire

When I came back to the Shire in the 1980’s I started to wonder what had happened to the Aborigional people in the Shire. What happened to the Aborigional people ?
God was good to me and he gave me another Aborigional friend in High School in My geography Class sitting next to Lisa Berrent. She helped me understand what my people had done to her people.
She told me about the massicars and forcing people to move out of their homes. The disease and the dispossention. She told me about the people who lived in Grays Point.
At that time another firend showed me a photo ofan Aborigional man dressed traditionally taken in 1901.
I was so sorry. But after High School I was left not knowing what to do.
I did start praying though. I prayed for Aborigional people.
