HOOK

Tonight we close our series on James by talking about to experience the presence of God.
Q - Don’t we all want that?

BOOK

James 4:6–12 ESV
6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. 11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?
CONTEXT: James was speaking of choosing Jesus instead of the things of the world. Literally, James was warning these Jesus followers in the first century the dangers of worldliness. Worldliness keeps us from Jesus.
TRUTH: THE PRESENCE OF GOD COMES FROM HUMILITY NOT PERFORMANCE

I. SUBMIT & RESIST

James 4:7 ESV
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Consider what we submit to on a daily basis. Most of the time, what we submit to takes from us instead of gives.
We have a real enemy who wants to destroy us.

Jesus experienced the presence of God through His humility.

II. BE REAL WITH YOURSELF & DRAW NEAR

James 4:8 ESV
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Being real with yourself means that you own up to where you are.
What do I need to be cleansed from?
Jesus does the cleansing, not you!

III. RECEIVE THE PROMISE OF GOD

James 4:10 ESV
10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
