Preaching Themes: Prayer, God_Presence

In 2009 a Dutch artist set up a local telephone number in the Netherlands and urged people to call and leave a message for God.
Johan van der Dong said he set up a phone number with voicemail to give people an opportunity to pause and contemplate life.
Callers who use the number will hear “Hi, you are speaking to God. I’m not in right now, so leave a message after the beep.”
Van der Dong said, “Like praying, leaving a voicemail message is a way to organize your thoughts.” He added, “It’s a perfect combination for some contemplation.”
I hope all of us here today realize that We Never Have To Leave A Message with Our Heavenly Father!
We get to talk to God personally. I’ve never had to leave a message for Him.

That is one of the best reasons to pray - Communication with the Father, a time in which you will always have contact.
But I have discovered that people still struggle with praying in this way.

Luke 11:1–13 (NASB95)

Instruction about Prayer

1 It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.”

2 And He said to them, “When you pray, say:

Father, hallowed be Your name.

Your kingdom come.

3 ‘Give us each day our daily bread.

4 ‘And forgive us our sins,

For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

And lead us not into temptation.’ ”

5 Then He said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves;

6 for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’;

7 and from inside he answers and says, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.

8 “I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

10 “For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened.

11 “Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he?

12 “Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he?

13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”

Teach us to pray - consistant, fervant, persistant, for protection, for forgiveness

Best way to learn to pray is to see a mentor do it! v. 1

Then Follow Their Lead v. 2 When you pray...

Charles McCutcheon prayed over our home and our family once in the presence of the girls!! WHOOO!
It made me want to pray like that! The girls commented on it too - and here is the big kicker. I don’t think it was for show. There was ties to the Power of the Father, to Scripture, to the blessing we already enjoyed!! and a thankfulness for all that God has given. Our spirits were opened to enjoy that Fellowship and Blessing once again, and every time we Pray!!

What Should We Include in Our Prayers:

FATHER - πατήρd, πατρός m; αββα (a Greek transliteration of an Aramaic word meaning ‘father’): (titles for God, literally ‘father’) one who combines aspects of supernatural authority and care for his people—‘Father.’
The Holiness of God, v. 2 In a number of languages it is impossible to employ an expression such as ‘your name’ as a reference for God himself. Therefore, it may be necessary to translate this expression in Mt 6:9 as ‘may you be reverenced as holy’ or even ‘may you be acknowledged as God.’ Louw, Johannes P., and Eugene Albert Nida. Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament
This is a progressive and not completely realized call for God’s name and holiness to be recognized.
One day He will be recognized as ULTIMATELY HOLY and Just without sin in HIs presence, but until then, we live in a world that does not recognize His Hallowed Name and sometimes jeers at it, and laughs at us. They don’t understand, and cannot until they know Christ as we do.
So one of our chief prayers should be to PRAY for God’s Kingdom to be realized in the hearts of as many as can be before He comes back.
We pray for our Daily Provisions.
Warren Wiersbe says, “All of our needs may be included in these three requests:
material and physical provision, Daily Bread, v. 3
moral and spiritual maturity, Forgive our sins, v. 4
and divine protection and direction. and Lead us not to Temptation, v. 4
If we pray this way, we can be sure of praying in God’s will.”
We pray for Forgiveness. But we have to offer forgiveness in order to receive it fully.
See Matthew 6:5-15

5When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

6 “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.

8 “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

9Pray, then, in this way:

‘Our Father who is in heaven,

Hallowed be Your name.

10 ‘Your kingdom come.

Your will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

11 ‘Give us this day our daily bread.

12 ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]’

14 “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

15 “But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

We ought to pray PERSISTENTLY

V. 5-8 - Loaves for a Friend
v. 9-10 - Ask, Seek, Knock
v. 11-13 - Good Gifts from the Father
Prayer is surrender—surrender to the will of God and cooperation with that will.
If I throw out a boat hook from a boat and catch hold of the shore and pull, do I pull the shore to me, or do I pull myself to the shore?
Prayer is not pulling God to my will, but the aligning of my will to the will of God.
