A Reason for War
A Reason for War
Tainted Hearts
How often do we hear people talking about following their heart?
Going with their gut?
It just felt right?
If the heart of man is broken by sin, what does it produce.
Notice the results of following our hearts:
strife
fits of anger
dissensions
divisions
rivalries
Don’t these sound like the recipe for war?
So, should we follow our hearts?
Far too often, our world is thrown into chaos because men follow their hearts.
Remember what God said to Cain:
Since the fall of man, we have been faced with this internal battle.
Even knowing the right thing to do, our selfish hearts lead us to do the opposite.
If wars are caused by evil, is there ever a reason to enter into war?
Today’s passage gives us a glimpse into a resounding theme within the scriptures that answers this question.
There is no, “Thou shalt or shalt not go to war” verse.
So, lets look at our passage and discuss whether or not we have a reason for war.
Pray
Read
Why did the kings go to war?
It was about control and power.
Why did Abram go to war?
To rescue the innocent.
What is God’s response?
Gave glory to God
What is the response of man?
Let me honor you
Abraham’s response:
Avoid’s corruption
Allows others to make their own choices.
When is War just?
It defends the innocent.
It is not done to get richer or more powerful.
It trusts in and honors God.
This is why we need Christ.
These verses make it clear that instead of being led by deceitful hearts we need to be led by the mind of Christ.
Only with this conviction can we face decisions about war with the right motive.
Let’s pray that God brings godly men and women into ever level of government, military, and that they reflect him in this fractured world.
